Going Abroad for News — We find in the San Francisco Bulletin the following telegram from Los Angeles, 11th inst., which is all new to us, "The Republicans have a celebration in Anaheim this evening, and intend firing one hundred cannon in honor of the Republican victory."
Steam Pump.—Mr. Phil Davis is adding to his new residence the convenience of a steam-pump of the variety known as "Walcox's Improved Steam Water Litter." The size used by Mr. Davis is capable of raising a thousand gallons of water per hour to a height of 50 feet. These pumps are made of all sizes from 1,000 to 100,000 gallons per hour capacity. The cost of the one now being put in will aggregate $300, including tanks and all necessary accessories. The work is being done under the supervision of Mr. N. A Brown the Los Angeles agent for the manufacturers.
Good Words.
Mr. E. Commina, editor and proprietor of the Moravia (Iowa) Tedette, paid us a flying visit last month, members us thus kindly in his editor correspondence: "Anabeim is situated in a beautiful valley of the Santa Ana River, which has a gradual descent the sea. The town is handsomely built, and has nice shade trees, orange olives, lemons, limes, etc., of the most picturesque style. There is a const healthy breeze blowing up from the tempering the climate, thus rendering it the most desirable place the travel or the tourist will find in California. The groves contain plenty of Cana-Birds, Parrots, and numerous other birds that are never seen in the state except in very warm country. This town is populated by a good industrial class of Germans, who cultivate large fields of grapes and in the finest varieties of wine in the State here, we made the acquaintance the gentlemanly editors of the Gazette who treated us in a kindly manner which we shall always remember."
RAMIE PLANTS.—We invite attention to the announcement of Mr. Cusin who has these plants for sale. We wish it would be a valuable experiment our farmers to introduce its culture it has proven exceedingly profitable elsewhere. All information may be obtained of Mr Olden at the office of Land Co.
THE WINE MARKET.—By our Francisco Market report of 14th we observe that Anabeim wines are much higher price than those of Angeles, and less than the Sonoma age. The full quotations are as follows for white and red wines: Cask refill; Vintage of 1870 range: 156q/156q; Angeles 20a25; Anaheim 25a28; Sonoma 35a45.
Firm Changed.—The old and p

The cost of the one now being put in will aggregate $399, including tanks and all necessary accessories. The work is being done under the supervision of Mr. N. Gypsum.—We have been shown by Dr. David Taylor a fine specimen brick of this article of which he informs us there is an immense deposit convenient to Anaheim. Besides its use in the manufacture of statuary it is a valuable tiltzer and commands a ready sale in the East for that purpose.
The Ventura Signal notes the discovery of a rich silver mine in the San Emilio range of mountains, about fifty miles northeast of San Bernadentura. Its existence was made known by an aged Indian named Carlos Juan who confided his secret to the Hon. A. G Escandon.
Vegetable leather is now extensively manufactured; the principal materials being cowhide and naphtha. The production on one third as costly as ordinary leather, which it resembles closely that they can be distinguished only by close inspection; and the vegetable leather has the advantage of being made in entire pieces of fifty yards in length if desired, and one and a half yards wide, of any thickness demanded, or uniform quality and ample strength.
Southern District Agricultural Association. We have received a pamphlet containing the Rules and Regulations, of this society, also the speed programme, premium list and names of the Judges of award for the coming fair to begin Oct. 31st at Los Angeles. We think it is in bad taste to say "Los Angeles City" on the title page, as Los Angeles is a city of sufficiently recognized status not to need this distinctive appellation added to its name. Among the Judges of award we notice the names of Jacob Ritter, A. Langenberger and Edward Evey of

STREAMER MOVEMENTS — By the new time-table the N.P.T. Co.'s steamers now sail every five days. The California on her last up trip left San Diego one day earlier than usual on account of the extra large quantity of freight, to be taken on board at Anaheim Landing. We make the world move a little.

The Star of the 19th inst. animadverts severely upon the action of the Board of Supervisors in regard to the proposed county bridge over the San Gabriel river and the re-opening of the old road known as the Jaboneria Road which it is said was abandoned twenty-five years ago. This road led from Los Angeles to a soap factory on the San Gabriel river and thence to San Juan This would change the road almost entirely from the present travelled route between this city and Los Angeles bringing it across the San Gabriel river at the southeast corner of the land of Mr. Foster. (A point where it is claimed a bridge will cost twelve or fourteen thousand dollars) thence through Galatin and over the low lands of the Coyote Ranch to Anaheim.

Nov. 1 Scare Crow — At the ranch of Mr. Radriguez may be seen an institution resembling a telegraph, surrounding a field, consisting of tall poles with a common twine extended along them after the fashion of the great lightning conductor.
We are informed that it was intended to keep crows out of the fields, but whether successful or not we do not know.
Change — We are informed that Justice Davis has disposed of his interest in the Brewery to Mr. Goldstein, and will shortly remove his office to the Enterprise Hall building. Mr. Olden of the Land Co. has removed his office to the same building and a gentleman from Los Angeles is about to open a grocery store in the building vacated by Mr. Olden.
