Sales and Retail Dealer in Drugs, Chemicals, Perfumery; A Wonderful Tree. There grows on the Isle of Madagascar, says the Manufacturer and Builder, a remarkable tree, called by botanists, Lucia Speciosa. From a solid trunk varying in height from ten feet upward and similar in appearance, though not in nature, to that of the Southern palmetto, springs up a bunch of stems, each about six or eight feet long, and exals supporting a leaf of the same length, and some are ten or twenty inches wide. The leaves, when dried, form theatch of all the houses on the eastern side of the Island, making a perfect waterproof covering, while the stems are used for partitions and sides. The bark of the tree is very hard, and makes that of the palmetto easily stripped off from the interior soft parts. For large houses this dark is cut in pieces of twenty or thirty feet long and twelve to eighteen inches wide, and the entire floor covered with the same as well joined as ordinary timber. The benefits derived from this tree are not limited to builders only. The green leaves are used by traders in place of waterproof wrapping paper for packages, by women for tablecloths, and the heavy pieces out of them for plates at meals; while certain portions are even formed into drinking vessels and spoons. But the chief peculiarity of this remarkable tree is that while standing in the forest the stems always contain a large quantity of pure fresh water of which travelers and natives make use in the arid seas. How Turkish Babies are Treated A Mrs. Harvey, who has been traveling in Turkey, and visiting harms, gives the following account of the manner in which newborn babies are treated: Soon after their birth they are rubbed down with salt and tightly swabbed in the Italian fashion. The pressure of these bandages is often so great the circulation becomes impeded, and incisions and scarifications are then made on the hands, feet and spine, to let out what the Turkish doctors and nurses call "the dead blood." The happy little creature is only occasionally released from its bonds and never thoroughly washed until the sacred month of thirty days has expired, when it is taken with its mother to the bath. No wonder that the sickly and amingook under such treatment and that the mortality among infants should be nightful. Japanese Girls—How the girls of Japan are educated is thus pleasantly described as follows: Throughout Japan it is the universal custom for young ladies, when arrived at the age of fourteen or fifteen, to be pierced in what might be appropriately called a noisening establishment. This establishment has the following among other peculiarities viz: All masters pay for the privilege of teaching or instead of as in the case with us being paid for their lessons. This makes the institution a labor of love. Then again, to a certain extent a Japanese young lady is allowed considerable freedom in the select- PLAIN AND FANCY AT FRANCISCO PRICES. from the Country promptly lined. complete Stock Always on HAND. Electric waves it has been ascertained by Professor Benj. A. Goudh, are transmitted through the All offices at a velocity of 7,000 to 8,000 miles per second. The electric waves it is stated, are conducted at more than double the above velocity along wires supported upon poles in the air, and it is reported that the higher the distance of the wires the greater is the velocity of the current. Thus when the wire is slightly elevated the signals are transmitted at the rate of 12,000 miles a second, and those at a greater height are sent at a rate from 16,000 to 20,000 miles a second.
