SALE AND RETAIL DEALER IN CHEMICALS, PERFUMERY; & C. & C. The German Language. Every child in school should learn to speak and read the German language. The people of this country, the intelligent portion particularly, are awakening to the importance of a knowledge of the German. In the New England States it is made a regular study in many of the schools and colleges. Men who can speak German as well as English grow in demand everywhere. On the farm, at the counter, the desk, in the shop, at the bar, in the pulpit, in the medical profession, in the school-room they have the preference. We can, to day, find at least a dozen congregations paying salaries from $1,000 to $1,600 a year, where ministers able to preach in both languages are required, they have been vacant for months, in several cases for years, begging for men. Clerks who can converse in both languages are always in demand, and command higher wages than those who can only speak one. But, independent of the broad and butter consideration, the German language should be studied on account of its intrinsic value, and particularly its literature. Dispense with Latin and Greek in your schools, but by all means let us have German. Neoraska Herald. THE KING OF COREA "A PLAIN SPOKEN MAN." In the letter of the King of Corea to Admiral Rodgers, published in yesterday's Herald, he speaks, like Bad Cloud very much to the point and THE KING OF CORONA "A PLAIN SPOKEN MAN." In the letter of the King of Corona to Admiral Rodgers, published in yesterday's Herald, he speaks, like Red Cloud, very much to the point and the purpose. He says:—"In the year 1865 a man of your nation, whose name was Febiger, came here and communicated and went away;" and he asks "why can't you do the same?" He says: "In the year 1865 a people called the French came here, and we refer you to them what happened. This people and kingdom have lived in the enjoyment of their own civilization for four thousand years, and we want no other trouble no other nations. Why should they trouble us?" He says that the hipwrecked crew of the American ships General Sherman were punished for piracy, and then he concludes:—"Do you want our land? That cannot be Do you want intercourse with us? That cannot be." He talks as Red Cloud once talked about the Pacific Railroad going through his hunting grounds, but for all that it has gone through; and so the King of Corona will be compelled to open his doors to intercourse with the "outside barbarians of the west." His 4,000 years of exclusion from the rest of the world are long enough. A Curiosity — We were yesterday shown by Mr. Morrissey a quantity of the liveliest little seed we ever saw. They were brought from South America and are called magnetic or electric A Curiosity—We were yesterday shown by Mr. Morrissey a quantity of the liveliest little seed we ever saw. They were brought from South America, and are called magnetic or electric seed. They are small in size, being a little larger than ordinary mustard seed and of a yellowish color. Placed on a sheet of paper they commence jumping up and hopping around as though they were alive, and the sheet uncomfortably warm. The "hop" continues all the time, and we are told they will continue in motion for years. How they find time to germinate is more than we know. The seed is certainly a curiosity of the vegetable kingdom. —Stockton Republican. The Snake nut is one of the most remarkable productions of the vegetable kingdom. It is found in British Guinea, and specimens are occasionally brought down the coast for sale as curiosities to the passengers by West India steamers. The nuts vary in size from about a small walnut to that of an ordinary egg, and the kernel closely resembles a small box constrictor, coiled up as if asleep. While the nut is unripe, the kernel can be uncoiled, and its resemblance of the body, fang and tail of a reptile is most extraordinary. The Sacramento Union says: We have received from R.S. Lockett or Brighton a bunch of White Tockay grapes, weighing nine and a half pounds. It is a large hit for a small boy. A terrible hurricane accompanied by earthquake shocks, occurred at the Island of St. Thomas on the 22d ult. 6000 people are left homeless and destitute and 150 killed or disabled.
