In the years 1864-5, a number of farmers, from California, attempted the cultivation of cotton on the Mamatlan River and other places, and in this enterprise they would have eventually succeeded, but for the frequent revolutions and pronunciamientos, which carried off their laborers, and even their mules, at a crisis when they were most needed for farm duty. They all finally became disgusted with a country in which no protection was extended them; but, on the contrary, every obstacle seemed to have been thrown in their way by the Government officials to complete their ruin, and cause their departure from a land in which Americans are not yet wanted. The same late awaited the numerous mining companies formed in California for working the silver mines in north-western Mexico. Millions of dollars in gold was spent in this State (Sinaloa) and Sonora, in the vain attempt at making these mines profitable. Machinery — some of the heaviest kind — was transported over the most difficult mountain roads; mills were erected, and old mines drained of the water that had remained in them since the Spaniards were driven from the country. Some of these mines proved to be worthless, while others could have been made to yield a profit, were it not for the blind policy of THECARIES' HALL, LOS ANGELES. EO. Some of these mines proved to be worthless, while others could have been made to yield a profit, were it not for the blind policy of the Government, in prohibiting the exportation of either the ores or ballion. The miners became satisfied that the richest mines could not be worked to an advantage, when they were even compelled to pay twenty eight percent to the Mint for having their silver coined. These, as well as many other incumbrances, forced upon them by the Government, ended in the abandonment of the enterprise; the mills were left to rust and fall to decay where they had been built, and the mines again filled with water. Their silent chambers will, in all probability, never again resound to the pick and shovel, until a new era in the history of Mexico commences — From the September Overland Monthly. Curing Figs. E J Smithers Esq., United States. consul at Smyrna, communicates to the Department some facts in regard to the process of curing figs in that region. The fruit is allowed to ripen on the tree and to fall to the ground, where it is allowed to remain three or four days, or until dry enough to bear transportation. It is then collected in hair sacks, and tightly pressed, in order to save space and to prevent fermentation. The sacks are then taken early in the morning to the local market, where professional packers resort to purchase material for the day's packing. At the packing-house the different qualities are assorted; and the fruit skillfully manipulated and moistened with salt water. Each quality is then placed in boxes of different sizes for the general market. The refuse is either sold on the spot for distillation of spirits, or packed indiscriminately, with the feet, into large boxes, to be sold as the commonest quality. Figs grown here are of a large whitish variety, thin skinned, very juicy and sweet, but unpalatable when fresh. The first is largely cultivated in the neighborhood of Aidin, but the best quality is grown at Nushi — Wine and Fruit Reporter. ANDIES, BLAIN AND FANCY. PLATT & NEWTON, Corner California and Front streets, VALUE OF THE SUNFLOWER PLANT - The sunflower can be cultivated very readily, an area of land sustaining 25,000 at twelve inches distant from each other. The flowers are very attractive to bees and furnish a great amount of honey. The average production of seeds may be estimated at fifty bushels to the acre yielding fifty gallons of oil. This is said to be equal to olive oil for table use, and is well adapted to burning in lamps soapmaking and painting. The refuse of the above quantity of seeds will produce 1,500 pounds of oil cake, and the stalks may be either burnt to furnish potash, or, when treated like flax, may be made to yield a fiber as soft as silk, and in large quantity. ASIATIC CHOLERA. — This fearful visitant is making its progress westward in Europe, and may even this year reach the United States. Two months ago it was on the Borysthenes A month later in Poland. A fornight since it reached Gallicia, Hungary and West Prussia, and ten days since one fatal case was reported at Hull, England, probably brought from the Baltic. The Police Justice of St. Louis has been obliged to notify the lawyers who practice in that court, that they must come in sober, or he will fine them as he would other drunkards. They cannot serve two cars at once.
