Red Wine Made of Currants
Very ripe currants will be picked, crushed, and pressed over a piece of cloth in a small-fruit press. The juice being increased by the same quantity of water, one pound and a quarter of sugar, (the said sugar to be dissolved by the additional volume of water), will be added to every quart of juice, and the whole of it collected in a small barrel. The barrel should not be touched with brimstone, but with a burning hotmeg; one intended to hold rum or some spirituous liquor will best answer. The barrel must be laid into a cool cellar and the bulb-hole left open during fermentation, which usually sets in the second day and goes on for two or three weeks. During that time the filling in the barrel must be renewed every day, so as to keep it full. For that purpose about six bottles of mixed juice and water should be retained on hand. After fermentation is completely over the bung will be gently put on, a little harden after a few days, knocked in tightly after a fortnight, and the barrel remain lying until the month of February next year. The wine may then be bottled; but if it be not bright enough, it must be drained out and remain lying for some weeks previous to being bottled; the stoppers must be driven in tightly. It takes about two baskets full of berries.
The First Printed Book.
It is a remarkable and most interesting fact that the very first use to which the discovery of printing was applied was the Bible. This was accomplished at Montz, between the year 1440 and 1445. Gutenberg was the inventor of the art, and Faust, or goldsmith, furnished the necessary funds. Had it been a single page, or an entire sheet, which was then produced, there might have been less occasion to have noticed it; but there was something in the whole character of the affair, which, if not predecented, rendered it singular in the usual current of human events. The Bible was in two folio volumes, which have been justly praised for the strength and beauty of the paper, the exactness of the register and luster of the ink. The work contained one hundred and fifty two pages, and being the first ever printed, of course, involved a long period of time, and an immense amount of mental and mechanical labor; and yet for a long time after it had been finished and offered for sale, not a human being, save the artists themselves, knew how it had been accomplished. Of the first printed Bible eighteen copies are known to be in existence, four of which are printed on vellum. Two of these are in England, one being in the Greenville collection, one in the Royal Library of Berlin, and one in the Royal Library of Paris. Of the fourteen remaining copies ten are in England—there being a copy in the libraries of Oxford, Edinburgh and London, and several in the collections of different noblemen. The volume copy has been sold as high as £1,800. James Lenox, Esq., of New York city, has a copy in this library which was purchased about six bottles of mixed juice and water should be retained on hand. After fermentation is completely over the bung will be gently put on, a little harder after a few days, knocked in tightly after a fortnight, and the barrel remain lying until the month of February next year. The wine may then be bottled; but if it be bright enough, it must be drained out and remain lying for some weeks previous to being bottled; the stoppers must be driven in tightly. It takes about two baskets full of berries and from four to six bottles of filling-wine to make a fourth of an ohm; to give the beverage a darker coloring, two cents worth of juice of the common red poppy may be admixed to a quarter ointment. This will get better the longer it remains in the bottle. — Wine and Fruit Reporter.

The volume copy has been sold as high as £1,300. James Lenox, Esq., of New York city, has a copy in his library which was purchased by Mr. Davidson at auction, in London, in 1858 for the sum of £500 sterling, equal to $2,200 independent of freight or duties. The custom-house officers passed it free of duty in consideration of it as a curiosity. It is the only copy upon this side of the Atlantic.
