WOLLWEBER, SALE AND RETAIL DEALER IN GS, CHEMICALS, Wine Prices too High. It is a matter of surprise to many persons that our California still wires are held at such high rates by dealers. In original hands, it is a superior variety that will command eighty cents or one dollar per gallon, while a large majority of new wines can be purchased by wholesale at thirty-five or forty cents. Our wine merchants demand for these same varieties two, three and four dollars per gallon, which makes the price equal, and in some instances above that of the imported brands, for which, as a general thing, there is a partiality. It is admitted by good judges that the flavor of California port, Riesling, Chambertin, and many kinds of white wines, is superior to corresponding brands of the foreign article; but the public at large can never be made to be believe this with their cost ruling so high as to act as a bar to their popularity. The prejudice in favor of imported brands has to be overcome; and to effect this, and to give our home-manufactured wines the preference, they must be sold cheaper. The margin of profits as between thirty-five and fifty cents in first hands, is dis-proportionate, and certainly cannot be necessary to make the business of wine dealing profitable. There must be considerable abatement before we can hope to compete successfully with the foreign varieties. Now is the time, if ever, when the French and German vintages are short, for our THECARIES' HALL, IN STREET. Opposite Commercial, LOS ANGELES. EO. The margin of profits as between thirty-five and fifty cents in first hands, is dis-proportionate, and certainly cannot be necessary to make the business of wine dealing profitable. There must be considerable abatement before we can hope to compete successfully with the foreign varieties. Now is the time, if ever, when the French and German vintages are short, for our merchants to introduce, and popularize California wines. To accomplish this, the wines should be sold at the lowest possible figure, with a dependence upon the future, when they have grown in popular esteem and the demand for them is greater, to make up for the deficiencies that may now accrue. We would suggest as a means of drawing attention to California wines, that those of our dealers who are determined to furnish them at fair rates advertise a schedule of prices, with name and date of vintage. Consumers would then have an opportunity of comparing the home with imported brands, and after trial—if the prices suited—would be very likely to decide in favor of the wines of California production. Consolidation—Capital and Labor It is very evident that the tendency of the times is in the direction of consolidation. A day scarcely passes but we read of new enterprises already inaugurated or in contemplation for uniting vast interests under a general management, or the possesses of immense wealth uniting their resources for the prosecution of business enterprises. Now this may be all well enough in itself and landable in the highest degree as one of the evidences advancing civilization. But this state of things must be watched with a jealous eye by the masses of laboring men in this country, and endeavor to hold in check any undue exercise of power the tendency of which is in the direction of a usurpation of the rights of the workingmen. Labor must also combine and consolidate if it would hold its own in the future against this centralization of wealth. All classes of laboring men and women, everywhere throughout this broad land should consolidate their labor, as men unite their capital, and stand shoulder to shoulder in a struggle for right and justice. The rights of labor never have, and never will, be freely conceded by capital; otherwise the necessity for strikes and trades unions never would occur. Please give consolidate if it would hold its own in the future against this centralization of wealth. All classes of laboring men and women, everywhere throughout this broad land should consolidate their labor, as men unite their capital, and stand shoulder to shoulder in a struggle for right and justice. The rights of labor never have, and never will, be freely conceded by capital; otherwise the necessity for strikes and trades' unions never would occur. Under these circumstances no man can afford to stand aloof from his fellows, or allow the bars of wholesome restraint to be removed. It is to be sincerely hoped that in time a remedy will be sought and found for the unpleasant necessity for strikes and the consequent bitterness that they always engender between laboring men and employers. It is a necessary evil arising from a false conception of the true relations of capital and labor, and with few exceptions is always entered into with regret by the workman, and only after every other resource for an amicable adjustment of differences is exhausted. A system of arbitration between the employees and the laborer—say a high joint commission—might in nearly all cases arrange the terms for a treaty of peace between conflicting parties. Workingmen are no more than human, and liable to fall into the errors common to all. Capitalists and proprietors are none the less so, by reason of their having a surplus of worldly goods; therefore a little less haughty domineering pride towards Trades Unions and their supporters would be very becoming, and have a tendency to lessen the acrimony now existing between these vast interests, so closely allied in this country, while we endeavor to seek for and inaugurate reforms that shall bring about this much to be desired state of affairs—[H.
