Thorough preparation of land is absolutely necessary to the successful and luxuriant growth of crops. Abundant crops cannot be grown on the same land in succession unless fertilizing matter is returned to it in equivalent proportions to the substance taken away. The draining of wet lands adds to their value, making them produce more and better crops, by producing them earlier and improving the health of the neighborhood. Deep plowing and subsoiling greatly improve the productive powers of a variety of soils that are not wet. All wet land should be drained. All grain crops should be harvested several days before the grain is thoroughly ripe. Clover as well as other grasses intended for hay, should be mown when in bloom. Sandy lands can be most effectually improved by clay. If such land require liming, it is best done by a compost of lime and clay. In slacking lime, salt brine is better than water. Shallow plowing operates to improve the soil, while decreasing production. No land can be preserved in a high state of fertility unless clover and the LIQUORS FOR LOCAL PURPOSES. If such land require linking, it is best done by a compost of lime and clay. In slacking lime, salt brine is better than water. Shallow plowing operates to imporish the soil, while decreasing production. No land can be preserved in a high state of fertility unless clover and the grasses are cultivated in the course of rotation. Mold is indispensable in every soil, and a healthy supply can alone be preserved through the cultivation of clover and the grasses, the turning of green crops or by the application of compost, rich in the elements of mold. How to Raise Good Chickens. Set the hen in a place where she will not be disturbed. Give a large hen twelve or thirteen eggs, medium sized one eight or nine. Don't let the hen come out of the sitting-room until she has hatched, but keep her supplied with gravel food, and water. When chicks are hatched, leave them in the nest for eight or ten hours. Don't meddle with the eggs during incubation; turning them once a day and all such foolishness is apt to prevent the eggs from hatching. Why He Didn't Go. Here is a painful evidence of original sin and total depravity. "Once" says the Reverend narrator, the superintendent asked me to take charge of a Sunday school class. 'You'll find 'em rather a hard lot,' said he. 'They all went fishing, last Sunday, but little Johnny Rand. He is really a good boy, and I hope his example may yet redeem others. I wish you'd talk to 'em a little.' I told him I would. They were rather a hard-looking set. I don't think I ever witnessed a more elegant set of black eyes in my life. Little Johnny Rand, a good boy, was in his place, and I smiled on him approvingly. As soon as the lessons were over, I said, 'Boys, your superintendent tells me you went fishing last Sunday—all but little Johnny here. You didn't go, did you, Johnny?' I said. 'No, sir.' 'That was right. Though this boy was the youngest among you,' I continued, 'you learn from his own lips words of good counsel, which I hope you will profit by.' I lifted him up on the seat beside me. MINOR MORALS FOR MARRIED PEOPLE: "The last word" is the most dangerous of infernal machines. Husband and wife should no more strive to get it than they would struggle to get possession of a lighted bombshell. Married people should study each other's weak points, as skaters look out for the weak parts of the ice in order to keep off of them. Ladies who marry for love should remember that the union of angels with women has been forbidden since the flood. The wife is the sun of the social system. Unless she attracts there is nothing to keep heavy bodies, like husbands from flying off into space. Wives, be lenient to the martial car; the smoke always hides the most disagreeable part of the battle. The wife who would properly discharge her duties must never have a soul "above buttons." The liberties of England have been won by mutual concessions. Let the husbands who would acquire the privilege of asking friends to dinner without notice remember this when his wife hints at a new bonnet. The wife's want is the husband's opportunity.
