It will be well if our citizens insist upon electing, at the forthcoming election, men who are known to be honest and capable, and who will labor to establish a better order of things. Unworthy nominations, for the sake of party success, should no longer go current. The good and true of both parties should certainly agree upon the qualifications of honesty and capability. It is time we should sink private interests, and commence furthering the interests of the public. THE SLATE. The County and Legislative slate, is about made up for the campaign, and any one with ordinary sagacity, can already conclude who are the favorite candidates. Thom, District Attorney for Los Angeles County, announces himself for re-election, subject to the decision of the Democratic party. A Coast Railroad. The Ventura Signal, is confident that the day is not far distant, where we shall have a Coast Railroad from Puget sound to the gulf of California, passing closely along the verge of the Ocean. The News of Thursday gives extracts from a report of Lieut Parke, U.S.A., embracing a survey from San Jose, through the Pajaro Valley, along Monterey bay close down the coast to San Diego. Concerning that portion of the route from Los Angeles to San Diego, the report roads as follows: From Los Angeles to San Diego, by personal inspection, I know three practicable routes, the relative merits of which can only be determined by actual survey, viz: 1. From Los Angeles, southeaterly by the Chino Ranch and Laguna to Temecula, and thence via Pala and Santa Margarita Cañon to vicinity of Buena Vista, thence to San Diego. 2. From Los Angeles, via Anaheim and the Santa Ana Cañon to Temecula, and thence as before. 3. From Los Angeles, via Anaheim to San Juan Capistrano, and thence to San Mateo, by Miñson Vieja de la Paz, and then by the coast, avoiding the undulating table lands, to San Diego. Dr T.H. The Express says: "No better man could be selected for the position. He is a practical teacher of long experience, and acknowledged superior abilities, and in every respect well qualified for the duties to be performed." Horace Greeley is about to start through from Texas along the line of the Texas, Pacific Railroad to Southern California. He is to be accompanied by an ex-Naval officer, skilled in engineering. Asa Ellis of El Monte, one of his own men, announces himself as a candidate for the Assembly, subject to Democratic primaries. Never in history of California did we so need an honest Legislature as and if Ellis goes there he will not one on the honest side of the state. Mr. Ellis was in the Legislation of '69 from this county. During term he worked hard, and succeeding through a greater number of bills than any other member in State. W. We are not much of a butter-sharp; but we have contrasted it with two other varieties procured in Anaheim, and the following i-our verdict: It has a fine grain and is not over-worked. It is also quite free from buttermilk: It has a superior flavor and is well salted. It is free from the axle grease taste of that we so often find upon our hotel tables. D. Mott, Esq., announces himself candidate for the Democratic nomination for member of the Assembly. Mott, has many friends, knows the states, and will be an exceedingly difficult man to beat.
