ANAHEIM GAZETTE. SATURDAY, JUNE 10, 1871. PARTICULAR NOTICE. ALL announcements of candidates, and Calls for political meetings, must be paid for in advance. For the former we charge $10 for the season. For the latter, the usual advertising rates. THE COUNTY DIVISION. How to Obtain it—Its Benefits—And a Comprehensive view Of the whole subject. We are glad to see a general awakening among the people, to the necessity of a division of this County. It is a measure, which the Anaheim Gazette was the first newspaper to advocate; and the just claims of which, should appeal to every sense and energy of our citizens. Our Present Inconvenience The present great inconvenience to people living remote from the county seat, is by no means a minor claim for the division. Those who live sixty miles away, have to travel the entire distance at an expense of at least $20 to pay their taxes, which sometimes (but seldom) amount to less than that sum. When the Board of Supervisors is in session for equalization, the same journey has to be made to rectify erroneous assessments. The attendance at the Courts, as witness and lage, and precinct; and on it, the Legislature will be hear and grant our application. How Not to Do Postulatory arguments is going down into his hard earned money, is not mence this business; and the people south of the San their anxiety to effect tha to be led astray as to the re to be adopted. All the snorting, through the inter- by the friends of this mea single act in the right avail nothing save to excite and contempt, not only c tion, but of every thinking realizes the importance and the necessities of the Another Importance Now, while the justice appeals to heaven itself, we have the resources, popul- ritory, we, unfortunately power to force the most county. The vote, to the San Gabriel is too strong, questionably combine again that direct issue. Upon tha no candidate will stand th chance for election, and it of folly for as to be deceive receive ourselves upon this a By reference to the Ga- and to the poll-lists of the cincts in the county, we fi are nearly 2000 votes tha garded as favoring an opp- the division. Those who live sixty miles away, have to travel the entire distance at an expense of at least $20 to pay their taxes, which sometimes (but seldom) amount to less than that sum. When the Board of Supervisors is in session for equalization, the same journey has to be made to rectify erroneous assessments. The attendance at the Courts, as witness and on juries, and the commencement and conduct of suits in law, necessitate an expense that should, and probably does keep many people out of law altogether. Another Reason. There appears from a late estimate of the Treasurer, a county indebtedness of $289,262, truly an appalling sum, and one which the people south of the San Gabriel do not care to increase further. Besides this, the business before the courts and county officials, is two great for the public convenience and ought to be divided. The Proposed New County The territory which it is proposed to include in the new county lies broad upon the Ocean, and has two very excellent harbors. Through this section two railroads are already projected; and as the population is rapidly increasing it is certain that by throwing overboard the ballast of taxation by a division, we will become one of the most prosperous counties in the State. The substantial jail at Anaheim, will be sufficient for all purposes for several years; and a Court House can be improvised or rented at a trifling expense. The surrounding townships which it is proposed to include in the new county will be benefited. They will have decreased taxation and easy access to their county seat. We Don't See It! Some of our neighbors at Los Angeles, advise us not to move in this matter at present. Let them ask us to forego anything else but this measure, and we will not dispute them; but upon this, our determination is unalterable. Its Benefits. We shall have few bridges to build, and the fees for all County purposes that direct issue. Upon no candidate will stand the chance for election, and it of folly for as to be deceive ourselves upon this issue. By reference to the Green and to the poll-lists of the cincts in the county, we find are nearly 2000 votes that garded as favoring an oppose we, by a strict unity about 700. To show the more plainly, we give a gram, showing the uneven lines of our County—the South; and containing the various precincts. We Don't See It! Some of our neighbors at Los Angeles advise us not to move in this matter at present. Let them ask us to forego anything else but this measure, and we will not dispute them; but upon this, our determination is unalterable. Its Benefits. We shall have few bridges to build, and the fees for all County purposes will be paid here at home, and expended among us. It will benefit the farmer by giving him a nearer market. It will benefit the mechanic by giving him more labor. It will benefit every citizen, by increasing the value of his real estate; and as to taxes, there need be no fears of any increase. We will be able to build County buildings, from the amount saved in travel and other expenses now incurred in visiting the County seat. How to Obtain it. Now, a few words as to the mode of procedure to obtain the division which we so much desire. It must be done by an Act of the Legislature, and our appeals must be to that source. We must circulate petitions throughout the interested townships, addressed to the Senate and Assembly of California. We must appoint ten or fifteen good men, to go forth and obtain the bona file signatures of all, or nine-tenths of all our people. We must appoint a Committee of five honest men, to employ legal counsel, and draft a proper bill for the new county. We must not be fooled with in this matter, and the hat-passing system should be ignored. Accompanying these petitions and the bill, let there be official resolutions from every township school district vil- and precinct; and our word for Legislature will be compelled to grant our application. How Not to Do it. Summatory arguments about a divided at a man, while your hand down into his pocket for his earned money, is no way to combis business; and we admonish people south of the San Gabriel, in anxiety to effect this object, not astray as to the means proper adopted. All the cavorting and gung, through the interested district friends of this measure, without to act in the right direction, will nothing save to excite the ridicule attempt, not only of the opposition of every thinking man who the importance of the issue, the necessities of the hour. Another Important Fact. while the justice of our claims to heaven itself, and while we are resources, population and terwe, unfortunately have not the to force the measure in this The vote, to the north of the abriel is too strong, and will unnably combine against us upon direct issue. Upon that platform, candidate will stand the ghost of a for election, and it is the height for as to be deceived, or to deselves upon this state of affairs. Reference to the Great Register the poll-lists of the various prein the county, we find that there early 2000 votes that may be refascing an opposition, while strict unity can only poll Calisher's Column.
