REPUBLICAN CAUCUS.
Strobel not Endorsed—Remarks of Judge Evey and J., J. Weglein,
—The Meeting Summarily Adjourned.
Parsuant to a call, a Republican meeting was held at the Water Company's building on Monday evening last. The object of the meeting was understood to be for the purpose of securing a Republican endorsement of Max Strobel for the Assembly; and also to obtain, if practicable, an endorsement of a meeting organized by citizens of Anaheim at Los Nietos on the 25th ultimo.
On motion of S. J. Davis, John Fischer was called to the chair. Mr. Davis was selected as Secretary. Mr Fischer then proceeded, and read a document, laudatory of the scheme in contemplation, and indicating what the meeting should do, or in other words calculated, to mould the thoughts of those assembled into a furtherance of the object.
After the reading of this document, a Committee of three was appointed to draw up resolutions, and they withdrew and prepared the same. Upon the return of this Committee and the reading of the resolutions, Judge Evey of Fairview arose, and addressing the Republicans present, said:
"Would it not be better to adjourn this meeting until some future day, and have all the representative Republicans advised of what was proposed. We should use circumstances and be
Common Council Proceeding
At the special meeting of the Council held on Saturday last, for purpose of determining the salary officers and the reduction of there were present: President P. Zeyn, and Councilmen Davis, Culpin, Boege and Bittner.
The bill of the Marshal contract arrest and care of an insane man was referred to the Board of Visitors.
Mr. Davis presented a petition ed by twenty citizens, asking that ordinance concerning licenses be pealed. After discussion upon the priety of sudden action in the vote was taken and petition applied with.
Upon another motion of Mr. Davis the meetings of the Council changed to monthly instead of monthly.
On motion of Mr. Davis, the sale of City Marshal, was reduced to per annum, payment to be made earlier.
On motion of Mr. Davis, the salary Clark, was reduced from $12 per month (or $100 per annum).
On motion the salary of City Actor was reduced from $150 to $75 annum.
On motion, it was resolved to voke the right of way of the Anheim Railroad Company, through the ground alleged for action that the city did not own the land but that they belonged to the Company.
Upon examination it was found
Upon the return of this Committee and the reading of the resolutions, Judge Evey of Fairview arose, and addressing the Republicans present, said:
"Would it not be better to adjourn this meeting until some future day, and have all the representative Republicans advised of what was proposed. We should use circumstances and be sure we are right before proceeding further. I think this meeting is premature; and besides, it is not a fair representation of the Republicans of Anaheim precinct. We have no right to do anything that will seem to bind the Republican party. If Major Strobel is the choice of the Democratic party, it will, hereafter, be time enough for Republicans to consider as to their endorsement of him. I do not see how the adoption of these Resolutions will operate to induce the Democratic party to nominate him; and indeed if that is the desired object, the proposed action of endorsement would weaken his chances. I therefore propose to adjourn this meeting without action, until the 26th of June, or after meeting of the Republican Convention.
This motion of Judge Evey was seconded; and Mr. J. J. Weglein rose, and speaking on the motion said: "From my knowledge of the population of this County, I am satisfied that two thirds of the total vote lies north of the San Gabriel river. It is said that leading men of Los Angeles, and two of the delegates now in the field for the nomination, are willing to draw a line with us and agree to a division, if we can show them the population, territory and other resources. I have no objection to Strobel being a candidate for the Democratic party; but it appears strange to me that a Republican caucus should undertake to ratify the proceedings of a Democratic meeting or without awaiting the action of the Republican Convention, accept a candidate, the Democrats put forward. We should wait and see if our party does not put up a man."
I see but about 25 men here to-night
tion to Strobel being a candidate for the Democratic party; but it appears strange to me that a Republican caucus should undertake to ratify the proceedings of a Democratic meeting or without awaiting the action of the Republican Convention, accept a candidate, the Democrats put forward. We should wait and see if our party does not put up a man.
I see but about 25 men here to-night and they are not all Republicans, and we cannot at such a meeting as this bind the party to action."
The question was then called on the motion to adjourn, and without action on the resolutions, the meeting adjourned as proposed.
Pic Nic.—A large party from Anaheim, went on a Picnic to the Santiago Cañon on Sunday last. The day was pleasant, and the participants happy and agreeable. Swings were manufactured from the hanging vines, and while some amused themselves therein, others indulged in rambles through grove and over mountain.
