ANAHEIM GAZETTE. SATURDAY, MAY 20, 1771 The "Fat Sheep." Some twenty-five years ago when I was pastor of a church in —, I took occasion one evening to attend a social meeting in the church in that place. As is their custom on such occasions, one after another rose and gave his or her experience. After a time it became clear that there was no room for me to give up my experience, which was done in the loving manner: "bretner, I have been a member of this church for many years. I have seen hard times; my family has been much ill at ease; but I have not the first time in my life to see my pastor of any of the trustees of this church cross the threshold of my door." No sooner had he uttered this part of his experience than he was suddenly interrupted by one of the trustees, an aged man, who rose up and said in a firm, loud voice: "My dear brother, you must put the devil behind you." On his taking his seat, the pastor in charge quickly rose, and also replied to the little man as follows: "My dear brother, you must remember that we shepherds are sent to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." Whereupon the little man rose again and, in answer, said in a very loud tone of voice: "Yes' and if I'd been a fat one you would have found me long ago." The effect upon the audience can be better imagined than described. An under graduate at Cambridge who the Boston Advertiser says found among the questions of his examination program this: "Why will not a pin stand on its point?" elaborately explained the point thus: "I. A pin will not stand." "Yes and if I'd been a fat one you would have found me long ago." The effect upon the audience can be better imagined than described. An under graduate at Cambridge, who the Boston Advertiser says, found along the questions of his examination paper this: "Why will not a pin stand on its point?" elaborately explained the point thus: 1. A pin will not stand on its head; much less is it possible that it should stand upon its point. 2. A point recording to Euclid, is that which has no parts and no magnitude. A pin cannot stand on that which has no parts and no magnitude, and therefore a pin cannot stand upon its point. It was if your stick it in. There is in Massachusetts a sixteen year old girl who is teaching a first class district school, who never had a day's schooling in her life. She was taken from the poor house by a hard family, and got her education by laying flat on her back and studying by the light of the kitchen range when the family had all gone to bed. A mother was amused the other day to hear this bit of argument from her little boy: "Mamma, I don't see how Satan could have turned out to be such a bad fellow—there wasn't any devil to put him up to it?" "I find, Dick, that you are in the habit of taking my jokes, and passing them off as your own." Do you care that gentleman condom? To ensure I do. A true gentleman will always take a joke from a friend." Transportation. GREAT REDUCTION IN FREIGHT Anaheim Lighter Company.
