TIME.
The earth laugh'd gaily ere its sod
By thy father's young feet was trod.
And fresh flowers will spangle its floor
When thou' and thy race are no more.
Time, with slow effacing fingers,
Hath swept the page where yet lingers
The dim mysterious story
Of the olden days' dark glory.
The scath'd pyramid, pride's fond trust,
And the builder's forgotten dust.
Speak him in the "Valley of Kings"
Where now the Arab maiden sings,
And bandits' feet insult the tomb
Where monarchs sleep within its womb.
Lonely now the giant ball,
And lonely the vast shadows fall
By twilight on the sculptured wall,
Nor mystic Memnon more replies
With plaintive note to morning rise.
The Fox and the Crab.
A young land crab crept out of his pond to make a little excursion in a meadow and see what was going on in the world. A fox who happened to be passing at the moment, noticed the crab as he crept slowly along, and after having wished him good morning, added in a mocking tone, "where are you going so slowly? When do you expect to get to the end of the field? It seems to me that you go backward

It seems to me that you go backward instead of forward."
Now this was a clever young crab, who had heard how sly foxes are, and he thought there would be no harm in playing this one trick, so he answered politely, "I am only a crab, it is true, Mr. Fox, but I can run much faster than you."
Mr. Fox sneered, "Indeed!"
"Well," said the crab, "as you appear to doubt my speed, suppose we run a race for a wager. Have you any objections?"
"Nothing would give me greater pleasure," replied the fox. "Shall we run from Berne to Bale, or from Bremen to Brabant?"
"Oh, no, that would take up too much time. I suggest that we try a half a mile, or say a mile; that will not be too much for either of us."
"A mile," echoed the fox, as if he thought "What is a mile to me? I can run that while the crab is getting ready to set off."
"I will offer you one advantage," added the crab, "which you must accept it I am to race with you."
"Well, let me hear what it is," replied Raynard, who was beginning to feel impatient.
"I will give you your own length start of me. Place yourself so that your hind feet touch my own nose, and when I cry away, you must set off."
This plan seemed to please Mr. Fox, and he answered, "I will do exactly as you wish," turned himself around, and placed his bushy tail within reach of the crab, who seized the long hair tightly with his claws without the fox perceiving he had done so, and shouted at the same time "away."
Off started Mr. Fox, as if the hunters were after him, his feet hardly touching the ground. As soon as he reached the next milestone he turned round and cried, "Where are you, Mr. Crab; where are you, dwaddling?"
Now, as the fox turned round to look for his companion his tail touched the milestone, and the crab, making the best of the opportunity, let go his hold and answered: "Here am I, waiting

Now, as the fox turned round to look for his companion his tail touched the milestone, and the crab, making the best of the opportunity, let go his hold and answered: "Here am I, waiting for you. I was just wondering when you intended to make your appearance; you have certainly taken time enough to get over a mile."
Now, Mr. Fox, who had no idea that he had brought the crab all the way clinging to his bushy tail, looked much astonished at seeing him there not the least bit heated or tired, and not knowing what to say, he paid his wager and slunk home to his den, determined to never laugh at a crab again.
Those who are always trying to deceive others may expect some day to be caught by the very people they have been trying to dupe.
No young woman ever looks so well to a sensible man, as when dressed in a plain, neat, attire, with but little ornament about her. She looks then as though she possessed worth in herself, and needed no artificial rigging to enhance her value. If a young woman would spend as much time in improving her mind, training her temper, and cherishing kindness, mercy and other good qualities, as most of them do in extra dress and ornaments to increase their personal charms, she would at least be recognized among a thousand—her character would be read in her countenance.
A Kansas hotel door bears the following placard: "This hotel is closed on account of a difference between the proprietor and cook, which was settled with pistols, and sent the proprietor to the grave and the cook to the jail."

The Sleepy Bridegroom.
A young couple residing a short distance from Bloomfield, Sonoma county,
California, determined to elope recently
and accordingly started for San Francisco on the morning stage for Petaluma, thence for steamer, and in due time
arrived at a certain hotel in that city,
which is sometimes called the "Paradise of Lovers." The two were young
and exceedingly rural, and their conduct soon convinced the initiated attendant at the hotel that they had been thwarted in their hymenial inclinations by hard-hearted parents and guardians opposed to what is satirically called the "decree of Heaven."
The emotions betrayed by the fugitives were various; modest in the extreme, they were unable to conceal their fondness from the guests in the drawing-room, mingled with a sort of triumph at their success and fear lest they might be overtaken, which at once enlisted the sympathies of all who observed them.
At length the young man went to the office and inquired for the proprietor,
alleging that he had some private business which could not be transacted with no other parties. The clerk said that neither of them was in, but that he could and would attend to anything the rural might unfold.
On this the young man seemed sken-

At length the young man went to the office and inquired for the proprietor, alleging that he had some private business which could not be transacted with no other parties. The clerk said that neither of them was in, but that he could and would attend to anything the rural might unfold.
On this the young man seemed skeptical, and commenced pacing the floor, exhibited the greatest restlessness, and finally entered the drawing room, from which he again issued after a short consultation, and approaching the clerk, said:
"Sir, there's a lady in the room; she wants to marry me and I want to marry her as bad; can you do anything for us?"
The clerk replied that everything matrimonial should be arranged in a short time, and in less than an hour the ceremony had been performed and the happy couple united by the firmest tie the law recognizes.
Soon after the bridegroom approached the desk and commenced looking over the register. The clerk inquired what he desired, and recieved for reply that he wanted to see the arrivals. His manner betrayed the fact that his mind was not easy, but what his troubles were no one could conjecture. After walking around the office for fifteen or twenty minutes he repaired to the book again, and said to the clerk in a low tone:
"Hadn't you better change the register and give us one room, now we are married?"
"That is already changed," replied the clerk; "you are marked for the same room."
"Well," said the gratified Californian, surprised at such thoughtfulness "well, just show me up, for I'm awful sloppy."
It is needless to add that his request was complied with.

When you play the interloods, sum-times pull all the stoppers out, and sum-times pull them all in. The stoppers is made to pull out and in.
Play the interloods about twice as long as the toon. The interloods is the best part of the mewsic, and should be the longest.
Play from the interloods into the tune without letting them know when the tune begins. This will teach them to mind their bizness. Always play the interloods faster or slower than the toon. This will keep it from being the same time as the tune.
