ANAHEIM GAZETTE. SATURDAY, APRIL 22, 1871. San Diego any Los Angeles Railroad. A matter which should earnestly engage the attention of the people of San Diego and Los Angeles counties, at this time, is the importance of early establishing railroad communication between this harbor, and Los Angeles and Anaheim. It is the great enterprise of all others demanded just now; and no personal jealousies or conflicting interests should be permitted to endanger its accomplishment. In our opinion, the future growth and prosperity of these counties depends more upon the speedy construction of this local road than upon any other projected improvement. Our Los Angeles friends are alive to the necessities of the hour, and the News in several convincing articles, has advocated immediate and vigorous action. We sincerely trust that no obstacle will be interposed here to the accomplishment of an undertaken upon which so much depends. It is quite certain that Eastern capitalists are ready to build this road if proper inducements are offered to them; and we have been informed that negotiations have been already undertaken, with flattering prospects of success. It is to be hoped that there will be but one feeling in San Diego in regard to this matter; and for the sake of the future prosperity of this part of the State—and specially of this city—that those of our citizens who are at variance as to other measures will be united in favor of this, and lend to it, it not material aid, at least their moral support. —San Diego Union. Potatoes, which are now on every body's table, were unknown to the civilized world before the latter part of the sixteenth century. They were a long time getting into general use, and becoming a common and cheap article of Potatoes, which are now on every body's table, were unknown to the civilized world before the latter part of the sixteenth century. They were a long time getting into general use, and becoming a common and cheap article of diet for all; and for many years after they were introduced into Europe, they were only the rarest luxuries, to be bought and eaten by the nobles and wealthy. In 1633, in the list of prices established by the Government, potatoes were ordered to be sold for two shillings (fifty cents) a pound, equal to thirty dollars a bushel. A few years previously, the wages of a bailiff of busbandry, head man on the farm, were fixed at the court at fifty-two shillings (about thirteen dollars) a year; and of mechanics, carpenters, masons, etc., at eight pence (about sixteen cents) with board, a day. Thirty-two years later, 1665, Muffel, writing on food and diet, says: "Potato roots are getting to be quite common now; even the husbandman sometimes buys them to please his wife." "By George!" exclaimed a freshman the other morning, "I've slept sixteen hours. I went to bed at eight and got up at eight." Transportation. The N. P. T. Co.'s Steamships, ORIZABA and CAIFORNIA.
