ANAHEIM GAZETTE. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 1871. Reclaiming Alkaline Soils. In its last number the Pacific Rural Press has a valuable and timely article on the various methods of relieving alkaline soils from the superabundance of salt which they contain. Unlike the eastern soils in this respect, measures must be taken to decrease this excess, and various modes are pointed out. One is the plowing under and plowing in of straw, strawy manure and sowing grain, which corrects the surplus alkaline matter by absorbing, and through chemical decomposition, neutralizing the active principles injurious to other growing crops, as also in making light and porous such soils as have become compact by settling in low places. Where the strata of soil is thin, containing these surplus salts, flooding the ground with water will answer a good purpose, particularly if the saline water can be drained off, so that successive floods can be applied. The cultivation of beets is excellent for such soil. They are great absorbents, and if the ground is also well strawed, manured and plowed, the evil will soon be eradicated. The Rural Press adds: But where the strata of alkaline alluvium is deep, and the alkali is constantly rising to the surface, and being deposited through capillary action and evaporation, there is something else necessary, to be done to avoid it. A thorough system of deep underdraining will accomplish much toward such an end. The alkali from beneath will rise only as high as the underdrainage, and flow away with the water which holds it in solution. By such action the surface soil will soon lose its alkali, and, with proper tillage, become very valuable. Mode of Preparation—Bucha in vacuo. Janiper Berries, by distillation, to form a fine gin. Cubeba extracted by displacement with spirits obtained from Juniper Berries; very little sugar is used, and a small proportion of spirit. It is more palatable than any now in use. Bucha as prepared by Druggists is of a dark color. It is a plant that emits its fragrance; the action of a dame destroys this (its active principal), leaving a dark and glistuous decoction. Mine is the color of ingredients. The Bucha in my preparation predominates; the smallest quantity of the other ingredients are added, to prevent fermentation; upon inspection it will be found not to be a Tincture, as make in Pharmacopia, nor is it a Syrup—and therefore can be used in cases where fever or inflammation exist. In this, you have the knowledge of the ingredients and the mode of preparation. Hoping that you will favor it with a trial, and that upon inspection it will meet with your appreciation.
