Education for Pretty Girls Pretty girls, unless they have wise mothers, are more educated by the opposite sex than their own. Put them where you will, there is always some man busying himself in their instruction; and the burden of masculine teaching is generally the same, and might be stereotyped as follows: "You don't need to be or do anything. Your business in life is to look pretty, and amuse us. You don't need to study; you know all by nature that a woman need to know. The only sense you need is lovely nonsense. You are by virtue of being a pretty woman, superior to anything we can teach you; and we wouldn't, for the world, have you anything but what you are."—Mrs. Stone's Pink and white Tyranny. LADIES WEARING COTTON.—The following sensible article is from Good Health: "Ladies generally are anxious for a full, graceful development of the 'bust,' an appearance which adds much to the beauty of a woman; yet many of them (ignorantly of course) adopt means which prevent the very effect they desire to secure, by allowing the pressure of tight corsets and thick cotton pads on the delicate organ which mainly gives it form, while it should be left free and unrestrained, that it may attain all the beauty and grace which naturally belong to it. Where these artificial abominations will be used, let some of the light elastic gauze material, now being introduced, be used in preference to the old-fashioned pile of cotton; but the best of them are likely to do harm. As for their deceiving the other sex, (for which purpose they are usually worn) I am pretty sure that they often fail of their intention, for men are not as verdant in such matters as women pay them the compliment of believing they are." the beauty and grace which naturally bolong to it. Where these artificial abominations will be used, let some of the light elastic gauze material, now being introduced, be used in preference to the old-fashioned pile of cotton; but the best of them are likely to do harm. As for their deceiving the other sex, (for which purpose they are usually worn) I am pretty sure that they often fail of their intention, for men are not as verdant in such matters as women pay them the compliment of believing they are." EDITORIAL DUTIES IN ARKANSAS. An Arkansas editor apologizes for the lack of editorial in his paper by saying that "the day had been consumed in answering challenges and arranging preliminaries to fight." He says "a pressure of editorial duties had allowed the matter to accumulate on his hands for several days, so that he had to devote considerable time to settling them all up in a lump." He assures his readers that "it will not occur again, as he disposed of his assistants as to allow him time to give immediate attention to those little matters at the time of their occurrence. Patent Medicine. TO PHYSICIANS. New York, August 16th, 1858. Allow me to call your attention to my Preparation of Compound Extract Buchu. The companent parts are, Buchu, Long Leaf, Cubeba Jasper, Berries. Mode of Preparation—Buchu in vacuo. Juilper Berries, by distillation, to form a fine grit. Cubeba extracted by displacement with spirits abtained from Juniper Berries; very little sugar is used, and a small proportion of spirit. It is more palatable than any now in use. Buchu as prepared by Druggists is of a dark color. It is a plant that emits its fragrance; the action of a same destroys this (its active principle), leaving a dark and glutinous decoction. Mine is the color of ingredients. The Buchu in my preparation predominates; the smallest quantity of the inner ingredients are added, to prevent fermentation; upon inspection it will be found not to tincture, as make in Pharmacopoeia; nor is it group—and therefore can be used in cases where fever or inflammation exist. In this, you have the knowledge of the ingredients, and the mode of preparation. Hoping that you will favor it with a trial, and that upon inspection it will meet with your approbation. With a feeling of profound confidence. I am very respectfully, H T. Helmbold. Chemist and Drugist of 19 years' Experience. From the largest Manufacturing Chemists in the World. November 4, 1854. "I am acquainted with Mr. H. T. Helmbold; he occupied the Drug Store opposite my residence, and was successful in conducting the business where others had not been equally so before him. McDONALD & CO., SAN FRANCISCO, CAL-FOR SALE. OUR DRUG BUSINESS located in San Francisco, Cal. After our best wishes and expressing our thanks for the liberal patronage we have received for more than twenty-one years, during which period we have been steadily engaged in the Drug business in California, we say in consequence of the rapid growth of the Walker’s California Vinegar Bitters, now spread over the United states and countries far beyond, we are necessitated to devote our entire time to said business. We are the Oldest Drug firm on the Pacific Coast and the only one continuous under the same proprietors since 1840, and have determined to sell our large, prosperous, and well established business on favorable terms. This is a rare opportunity for men with means of entering into a profitable business with advantages never before offered. For particular enquiries of R. H. McDONALD & CO., Wholesale Druggists, J.C. SPENCER, San Francisco, Cal. N.R. Until a sale is made we shall continue our impatiens and keep a large stock of fresh goods constantly on hand, and sell at prices to defy competition. The exhausted powers of nature which are accompanied by so many alarming symptoms, among which will be found, indisposition to exertion, loss of memory, wakefulness, horror of disease, or forebodings of evil; inflict universal insults; prostration, and inability to enter into the enjoyments of society. THE CONSTITUTION Once affected with organic weakness, requires the aid of medicine to strengthen and insignitate the system, which Helmbold’s Extract Buchu invariably does. If no treatment is submitted to, Consumption or insanity ensues. Helmbold’s Fluid Extract of Buchu In affections peculiar to females, is unequalled by any other preparation, as in chlorosis, or retention painfulness, or suppression of customary evacuations, ulcerated or schirrups state of the Uterus, and all complaints incidental to the sex, or the decline or change of life. Helmbold’s Fluid Extract Buchu AND Improved Rose Wash will radically exterminate from the system diseases from habits of dissipation, at little expense; or no change in diet no inconvenience or expense completely superseding these noxious dangerous remedies, Copaiva and elsewhere in all these diseases. USE THEY ARE NOT A VILE PANCY DRINK, Made of Rye Rum, Whiskey, Proof Spirit and Retinene Liquors, prepared with and sweetened to please the taste called "Tomato." That lead to drunkenness and pulp, but are made from the Native Roots and herbs of California from all Alcoholic Stimulants. They are the GREATEST BLOOD PERIOD AND LIFE GIVING PRINCIPLES, particularly in the management and restoration of the blood to a healthy condition. No treatment is required according to direct instructions. They invigorate the stomach and stimulate the torpid veins and blood flow, and improve new life and vigor to the whole system. One bottle in each jar will convince the most incredulous of their curative effects. Cleanse the Vitiluted Blood whenever you find its impurities bursting through the skin in Pimples, Eruptions or Sores; clean it when you find it obstructed and sluggish in the veins; clean it when it is foul, and your feelings will tell you when. Keep the blood pure and the health of the system will follow. PIN, TAPE and other WORMS. Burking in the system of so many thousands, are effectually destroyed and removed.
