ANAHEIM GAZETTE. SATURDAY, JANUARY 28, 1871. Custor Bean Culture. The Best Beans—When and How to Plant—Amount of Yield—Profit, Etc., Etc. ANAHEIM, Jan. 24th, 1871. G. W. BARTER, Esq.:—As many of the farmers in this section (myself included) intend planting castor beans this season, and as probably the public generally are not well informed as to the proper method of planting, cultivating and harvesting this crop, I send you for publication, the following directions, which I have just received from Chas. H. Hedges, Esq., of Marysville, who has had a large experience in cultivating this crop. The information given consists of answers to certain questions, and which embody all the information required: The best bean is the common, small, Illinois variety, (the seed can be obtained at 5 cts per bound, of the Pacific Oil & Lead Works, San Francisco). Plant three beans in a hill, six feet apart each way, but when of sufficient size, thin out, leaving but one plant in a hill. Leave an avenue 12 feet wide every twelfth row. The preparation of the ground, and the after cultivation, the same as for corn. In harvesting, one man can attend to eight acres. It is important in marking out the ground that the rows should be straight, and that the plants should stand at regular intervals, as that will facilitate both the cultivation and the harvesting of the crop. In conversing County, in relation to cultivation of crops find that there are opinions as fact, every one by one person to plow 'till the deep, and catch Heaven sends, dews or rain thoroughly; "one allows the your land, pros because it leech it." Ye Gods ice in agriculture. Probably the experiment plowing and mending kind of produce mate. We work all our readers Olden, by a coarse and moisture. every twelfth row. Before the beans ripen, a convenient piece of ground should be prepared, similar to the drying-ground of a brick yard, the size, of course, to be proportioned to the extent of the crop. When the beans commence to ripen, it is absolutely necessary that the pickers should go through the field, collecting the spikes as fast as they turn red, or they will pop, and the beans be wasted. Mr. Hedges is a large planter, and his plan is to work his men in gangs with every wagon and driver. He has twelve men, six on each side; each man takes his row, and when his basket is filled, empties it into the wagon. In this way the gang move rapidly over the field, and if the beans are ripening fast, by the time they get through once it will be time to commence again, and so on to the end. In placing the beans in the popping-yard, a good margin should be left outside, all around, as the beans are sometimes thrown ten feet. After the pods have burst, rake them off, clean with a fanning mill, and the beans are ready for market. These are the substance of Mr. Hedges directions, which I have condensed into the fewest words possible, and I have endeavored to make them plain and easily understood. I have also just received a letter from the Pacific Oil & Lead Works, San Francisco. They offer to sell beans for seed at 5 ots per pound, delivered at their mill, and will contract to buy all the crop of this county at [4] four and a-half cents per pound, payable thirty days after delivery at their mill. This is equal to four cents per pound at Anaheim Landing, or $80 per ton. Mr. Hedges says the yield per acre, about Marysville, is from 12 to 18 centals per acre — here on good corn land. Francisco. Mr. Hedges says the yield per acre, about Marysville, is from 12 to 18 centals per acre.—here on good corn land, it would be quite as much, and possibly more. This crop has been tried this season by several persons, and I believe in every case with a successful result. It will live and produce on ground too dry for corn, and has no enemies; neither mustangs nor grasshoppers will touch it—for obvious reasons! This fact makes it of great value to us, in our present unfenced condition. A year's experience satisfies me that the raising of crops of small grain in this section of the State, will always be more or less uncertain, and that the sooner we devote our attention to trees, vines, castor beans, cotton, corn and such other plants that, having deep roots, can reach and subsist upon the natural subterranean moisture, which can always be found ready to rise to the surface of deeply plowed and well pulverized land. I obtained the above information for my own use, but as I am desirous to aid in the prosperity of my neighbors, you will much oblige me by giving this a place in your paper. Yours Truly, Wm. R. Olden. The Rate.—It is estimated that about ten new houses per week are erected in that portion of this county which lies south of the San Gabriel. Opinions Differ. In conversing with citizens of this County, in relation to irrigation, cultivation of crops and deep plowing, we find that there are just as many different opinions as there are producers. In fact, every one has a theory of his own. By one person we are told: "No use to plow 'till the ground gets soaked." From another: "Plant early and plow deep, and catch all the moisture that Heaven sends, either in the form of dews or rain." One says: "irrigate thoroughly;" another says: "If any one allows their water to flow across your land, prosecute them for damages, because it leeches the strength out of it." Ye Gods! whose advice is a novice in agriculture going to take? Probably the County is undergoing an experimental condition in relation to plowing and moisture, as well as to the kind of products adaptable to the climate. We would be pleased, as well as all our readers, to hear from Mr. W. R. Olden, by a communication on plowing and moisture. New Advertisements. ANAHEIM Lighter Company. Health has a beauty of its own. No eruptions, sorrs or discolorations disfigure or annoy the man or woman whose stomach, liver and bowels do their duty thoroughly. To compel them to their work, to render it impossible for them to do it in a slowly, imperfect way, it is only necessary to take a few doses of Dr. Walker's Vinegar Bitters. F. W. KUELP, jan28w2 Clerk of Common Council. City of Anaheim, Jan. 21, 1871. IT IS A GREAT MISTAKE to suppose that the cause of rheumatism, neuralgia or gout exists where the pain is experienced. The source of these diseases is generally ourn in the blood, and it is one of the special properties of Dr. Walker’s Vegetable Vinegar Bitters to neutralize this deposit, while it renovates the relaxed kidneys and thus prevents them from permitting a portion of their secretion to escape through improper channels. Torpority of the stomach has also much to do with the vitiation of the blood, and upon this organ the Bitters act directly as a stimulant and invigorant. NEW STORE! NEW GOODS!!
