SATURDAY, JANUARY 14, 1871. A Night on a Roof—A Practical Joke Reverse! A man named Hotchkiss, over in San Bernardino, the other night thought he would have some fun searing his wife by dropping a loose brick down the chimney into the fireplace in her room. So he crept softly out of bed, and with nothing on but his shirt, sneaked upstairs and got out on the roof. Mr. Hotchkiss dropped nineteen bricks down the chimney, each one with a vigorous slam; "but his wife never screamed a solitary time. So then Mr. Hotchkiss gave it up and thought he would go down stairs; but he found that Mrs. Hotchkiss had her head out of the trap-door watching him all the time, and when he had finished she had shut the trap and fastened it on the inside. It may be as well to state that Mr. Hotchkiss spent the rest of the night sitting on the sharp peak of the roof with his trailing garments of the night fluttering in the evening breeze, singing "I'm lonely to-night." Mrs. Hotchkiss intimated to her confidential friends that she thought she had him. At one of our neighbors' houses was a very bright little girl. It chanced once that they had as a guest a minister, an esteemed friend. Little Anna watched him closely, and finally sat down beside him, and began to draw on her slate. "What are you drawing Anna?" asked the clergyman. "I've makin' your picture," answered the child. So the gentleman sat very still, and she worked away for a while. Then she stopped, compared her work with the original, and shook her little head. "I don't like it much," she said. "'Tain't a great deal like you. I desn'll put a tail to it, and call it a dog.'" Fancy his feelings! What a likeness it must have been. Fortune has advanced no one so high, as not to threaten him with the same treatment with which she had permitted him to treat others. He thinks very wrong who regards only himself, and makes self-interest the ground of friendship; he will end as he begun: he professes to serve his friend even in bonds, but as soon as he hears the clinking of the chain, deserts him. After friendship is contracted, all trust is due. The best ale for nutrition has the least alcohol. Lager is one-half the strength of ale proper. The English consumption of ale is one barrel per annum for all ages of the whole population; of beer in Bavaria, 133 litres per annum per caput. Weiss beer is as innocuous as water. King Louis, of Bavaria, takes four litres of lager at a sitting. Cider, moderately used, promotes longevity. The adulterating of wines and spirits is immense. Port is scarcely procurable for gold, but New York annually sells twice the whole product and London twice that amount. "Tommy, my son, what are you doing there with you feet dangling in the water?" "Trying to catch cold, ma, so that I may have some more of those cough lozengers you gave me yesterday." RINALDI & CO. TO PHYSICIANS. New York, August 1863. Allow us to call your attention to my Preparation of Compound Extract Balsam. The composition parts are: Balsam, Long Leaf, Cabbage Jasper Berries. Mode of Preparation—Balsam in vapour. Jasper Berries by distillation, to form a fine gin. Cabbage extracted by impregnation with spirit obtained from Jasper Berries; very little sugar is used, and a small proportion of spirit. It’s more palatable than any now in use. Balsam as prepared by Druggists is of a dark color. It is a plant that emits its fragrance—the action of a flame destroys this (in another principle), leaving a dark and gratinous deposition. Mines is the color of ingredients. The Balsam is my preparation predominates; the smallest quantity of the other ingredients are added, to prevent fermentation; upon inspection it will be found not to be a Tincture, so make in Pharmacopia, nor is it a Syrup—and therefore can be used in cases where fever or inflammation exist. In this you have the knowledge of the ingredients and the mode of preparation. Hoping that you will favor it with a trial, and that upon inspection it will meet with your approbation. With a feeling of profound confidence, I am, very respectfully, H. T. HELMBOLD, Chemist and Druggist of 19 years’ Experience. (From the largest Manufacturing Chemists in the World.)
