ANAHEIM GAZETTE.
SATURDAY, JANUARY 14, 1871.
Notice to Patrons.
Mr Richard Melrose is to make the collections for the "Gazette" in Anaheim, accring and due on Monday next, the 16th instant. We hope that our friends will act with their usual promptness in adjusting their current accounts with this paper. Ed Gazette.
Our Water Supply.
We understand from Mr. John Fischer that the Anaheim Water Company is entitled, through their main water ditch, to one halt of the volume of water that flows in the Santa Ana river; and that they are entitled to that flow at all seasons of the year, and at all hours of the night—continuously, if necessary. Now, if this is the case, why does not that Company let their water flow? Does it hurt the ditches? Does it hurt anything or anybody? We ask in all seriousness, if it would not be better to let the water flow along our ditches through the city, and go to the parched ranches of the outside men west of the city, and prosper those men, rather than be shut off from that portion of the earth, which is now crying aloud for very thirst. Is the water kept back, in order that a small monopoly may be profised by the sale of a few outside Rights, which they have no right to sell? Would not the people of this city, who are the stockholders in this Company, be profited?

OUR CLIMATE — The old of the 27th uit., concerning our climate The climate of South so delicious that people institutions are const that direction in pre-
the city, and go to the parched ranches of the outside men west of the city, and prosper those men, rather than be shut off from that portion of the earth, which is now crying aloud for very thirst. Is the water kept back, in order that a small monopoly may be profiled by the sale of a few outside Rights, which they have no right to sell? Would not the people of this city, who are the stockholders in this Company, be profited more by having green fields and well cultivated ranches to the westward, than they now are by the questionable mode of having their water tailings sold in that direction?
The Water Company have the right to a supply for original Anaheim and no more—and before they sell their drainings (whether on pretext of extended and expensive ditches or not), they should go to work and definitely acquire additional and extended privileges. The water flow of the Santa Ana is being largely absorbed above us. The Riverside settlement is running three large ditches out of it. The Chapman tract, is soon to take a stream out of it twelve miles long. Mr. Richmond, three miles north of Anaheim, has projected a private ditch through the lands of Mr. Kramer to his own property, and little by little the water is being taken up. It is clear to be seen, that if the Anaheim Company does not acquire additional rights for itself, it will be liable to legal quibbles and annoyances; and leave field for some new company to carry water along outside our city limits to the western ranches.
By conversation with Judge Evey, we are satisfied that the outside men are willing to pay a moderate tribute to the Anaheim Company, if they will let their water run; but cannot pay $2 per acre, and an additional sum for every eight hour's flow. Let no narrow policy of any company retard the general prosperity of our country.

OUR CLIMATE — The New York Herald of the 27th uitt., has the following concerning our climate:
The climate of Southern California is so delicious that people of delicate constitutions are constantly repairing in that direction in preference to Florida, Cuba or the Bahamas, which used to be the popular resorts Europeans will soon discover that there is no place in Southern Europe superior in climate for invalids to this portion of our Pacific coast in the winter season, and we should not wonder if in a few years the wine-bearing valleys of California were more frequented by this class than the present haunts in the south of France.
We are glad that every well conducted business house of Anabeim, sees proper to keep their business constantly before the public, in the columns of "Gazette," for the sake of the impression it produces upon our numerous distant readers whose eyes are now turned toward this place. They cannot judge of the business done here in any other way. It will also indicate the enterprise of the town better than anything else. But it pays our business men to advertise for the sake of the home trade. The readers of the "Gazette" embrace their best paying customers in this place and vicinity.
No first class business man thinks in economy to save a couple of dollars a month by not advertising. Intelligent citizens read newspapers: Intelligent business men, advertise.
ROAD IMPROVEMENTS.—Mr. W. H Mitchell, road Superintendent, informes that the bridges on the Los Angeles turnpike, beyond the Coyote House have been placed in a suitable state or repair. Also that the slough this side of the Coyote House will soon be supplied with a substantial bridge.
