ANAHEM GAZETTE. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 17, 1870. Arrac Punch — To one bottle of Old Batavia Arrack add six lemons, in thin slices, and let them steep for six hours. Take them out very carefully, without squeezing. To one quart of boiling water add one pound of loaf sugar. When the sugar is dissolved, add the hot solution to the Arrack. Be sure to remove the lemons first. When cold, it is a delightful liquor, but it should only be drunk from small glasses. Those whose impatience will not permit them to wait until it is cold, should use it with caution. By the way' the young rice of our South would make a very fine Arrack beyond doubt. It needs to be kept many years, however, before it is met low enough for use. American Arrack might be made to rival that of Batavia. After the Abyssinian war, two officers of the English army made an excursion from Aden, on the Indian Ocean, three hundred miles in the interior of Arabia. In the region which they visited in a desert called the Bahreel Saffri, or Sea of Saffi, so called from Hing Saffi, who, in attempting to cross the desert, disappeared with his whole army. It is dedcribed as being covered with undulating hills, which gave it the appearance of a moving sea. On this strange desert are white patches formed of impalpable powder, into which if a plummet, with a sixty fathom line, is thrown, the whole slowly disappears. In one of these quick-sands the ill-omened King Saffi and his host found a tomb. A Chicago gentleman, who had been for days overworked at his business, undertook to escort a young lady home from the opera. He fell asleep in the carriage, and the lady, having no one to criticise the performance with her or discuss the merits of their acquaintances, also wooed the drowsy god, and pretty soon both were fast asleep. The driver somehow managed to fall asleep also; and as the horses were kind and gentle, they jogged along faithfully until No. — Washington street was reached. Here they stopped in front of the house, and there they remained. Whether the lady or the gentleman or the driver woke first is not known, but it was nearly 2 o'clock when they did discover their absurd situation. Elder Knap once said from the pulpit: At dinner, when a guest was present, and a small girl talked more than her austere parent thought she ought to, the worrying mother undertook to check her, first by frowning at her, and then by telling her that children should be seen and not heard. Feeling in both these attempts, she snapped at her the question, 'Why is it that you always talk so much?' 'Pause I've dot some aim to say,' was the instant reply, at which the solemn maternal ancestor was obliged to look another way, and the company laughed outright. ANAHEIM BUSINESS DIRECTOR. Allow me to call your attention to my Preparation of Compound Extract Bechu. The composition parts are Bunia, Long Leaf, Cabella Juniper Berry. Mode of Preparation—Buchu in vaccine. Jusper Berries, by distillation, to form a Rose gum. Cabella extracted by displacement with spirits obtained from Juniper Berries; very little sugar is used, and a small proportion of spirit. It is more palatable than any now in use. Buchu as prepared by Druggists is of a dark color. It is a plant that contains its fragrance; the action of a same destroys this (its active principle), leaving a dark and glutinous decoction. Milk in the order of ingredients. The Buchu in my preparation predominates; the smallest quantity of the other ingredients are added, to prevent fermentation; upon inspection it will be found not to be a Tincture, as make in Pharmacology, nor is it a Syrup—and therefore can be used in cases where fever or inflammation exist. In this, you have the knowledge of the ingredients and the mode of preparation. Hoping that you will favor it with a trial, and that upon inspection it will meet with your approval.
