PATING INTEREST.—About paying interest on money, Henry Ward Becher discourses as follows:
No blister draws sharper than the interest does. Of all the industries, none is comparable to that of interest. It works all day and night, in fair weather and foul. It makes no noise, but travels fast. It gnaws at a man's substance with invisible teeth. It binds industry with its film, as a fly is bound in a spider's web. Debts roll a man over and over binding hand and foot and letting him hang upon the fatal mesh until the long-legged interest devours him. There is but one thing on a farm like it, and that is the Canadian thistle, which swarms new plants every time you break its roots, whose blossoms are prolific, and every flower the father of a million seeds. Every leaf is an awl, every branch a spear, and every plant like a platoon of bayonets, and a field of them like an armed host. The whole plant is a torment and vegetable curse. And yet a farmer had better make his bed of Canada this tles than attempt to be at ease upon interest.
THE SCIENCE OF GOEDSEY.—The science of Goedsey is one to which, at first glance, little attention has been paid in the United States, but in reality a great national work has its value in the development of this special branch of mathematics and physics. Apart from the importance of its immediate use to the navigator, the survey of the coast of the United States comprehends the measurement of the figure of the earth. This involves the determination of the degrees of longitude and of latitude from base line measured by standard rods of apparatus, and the computation of the numerous lines therewith connected, and stretching over the length and breadth of our country. It includes the measurement of horizontal angles, and the determination of the direction of all the

This involves the determination of the degrees of longitude and latitude from base line measured by standard rods of apparatus, and the computation of the numerous lines therewith connected, and stretching over the lenth and breadth of our country. It includes the measurement of horizontal angles, and the determination of the direction of all the lines of such triangulation with regard to the true meridian dy observations upon stars.
Mrs. Partington says she did not marry her second husband because she loved the sex, but that he was just the size of her first husband, and could wear out his old clothes.
Western Cornelia thus maternally addresses her eldest jewel: "My daughter, you are now fifteen years of age, engaged to be married, and without a freckle on your face. I have done my duty."
