ANAHEIM GAZETTE. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 1870. The Thirty-second Parallel Road. The Peoria (Ill.) Transcript noticing the recent meetings of stockholders of the 32d Parallel R. R. Co., says: Gen. Fremont displays the Same unconquerable perseverance in this enterprise that has always characterized him since he successfully carried off Jennie from the paternal mansion. Though baffled in France, and defeated in Congress, he still persists and will yet be successful. A Southern Pacific railroad will be built, and that, too, before five years shall pass away. The route is shorter, less liable to be interrupted by storms, and passes through a rich country that only needs railway facilities to secure a rapid development. The best and cheapest lands in the country are to-day situated in Texas and Arkansas. Hitherto shut out from emigration by their isolated condition and by the character of their inhabitants, they are now thrown open to Northern men and to Northern enterprise. They will yet be checkered by railroads, and filled with an industrious population. The tide of emigration which has been so steadfastly setting to the Westward, will, within the next decade, deflect to the South, and an army of small farmers take up the land in eighties and quarter sections. A Number of wags in the Prussian army before Metz, whose fondness for practical jokes had not gone under 'mid the terrible carnage, crept during the night to a very advanced position, and there planted an imitation battery behind some ruins of a destroyed farm house. Beehives turned upside down represented mortars, and stovepipes with the outward rims turned over so as to look broad were the canon. Some old uniforms hung on poles were soldiers. In the morning the French batteries opened a terrific fire on the sup- army before Metz, whose fondness for practical jokes had not gone under 'mid the terrible carnage, crept during the night to a very advanced position, and there planted an imitation battery behind some ruins of a destroyed farm house. Beehives turned upside down represented mortars, and stovepipes with the outward rims turned over so as to look broad were the canon. Some old uniforms hung on poles were soldiers. In the morning the French batteries opened a terrific fire on the supposed battery, and with such an effect that soon not a vestige of it was to be seen. Another great French victory can thus be bulletined from Tours. There is a Hard Shell Baptist preacher in Kentucky, who positively declines to have his life insured, on the ground that "it would be jest straight bettin' against the Lord Almighty." "The boy stood on the American Bakery," writing a letter to his dad, on extra-fine note paper, bought at Brodrick's Stationery store NEXT the Post Office. The Gazette Office has a larger assortment of type than is on hand elsewhere south of San Francisco. It also has larger types by two inches than is used elsewhere in this region, and hence those in want of Mammoth Posters would do well to call. Liberty Stables.
