Toasts, Incidents, Etc., R.E.
Of all the grand and interesting occasions had in Anaheim, perhaps none ever exceeded in brilliancy, fashion and distinguished personages, the event of the Grand Masonic Ball and Banquet of the 17th instant. It was overflowing with good will, and vied in harmonious concord the gatherings of any people it has ever been our pleasure to meet with. At about twelve o'clock in the day, the first omnibus arrived from Los Angeles, laden with a bevy of her fairest ladies, and a sprinkling of her finest men. These, being the guests of Mayor Strobel, drove immediately to his residence. Shortly afterwards, Reynolds' coach arrived, bringing J. F. Burns, Esq., T. E. Rowen, Esq., Chas. P. At twelve o'clock, the supper-maroh signalled the party to the supper-hall beneath, where a most bountiful propast was spread. 'Ere this was discussed the wine flowed freely, and im prompta speeches made upon call. Re turning again to the hall, the dance was resumed until a late hour of the morning, when set by set disappeared, until all was quiet, and the participants gathered away to the various places provided for their accommodation.
While the expense of this entertainment was large for so small a Lodge to bear, the receipts on account of sales of tickets were large, and we understand the affair has paid its way, while we know that much honor and credit has been gained by Anaheim Lodge, No. 207, Free and Accepted Masons.
Drafted.—Reliable information has been received here that H. W. Hellman, of Los Angeles, who went on a visit to Germany about the breaking out of the war, is drafted in the Prussian army, and is doing gallant service in the ranks.
Michael Reese of San Francisco is also corralled, and is, it is said, awaiting his trial for desertion years ago, before he came to America. It is thought that Bismarck will get about one million and a half of dollars from Michael for his habeas corpus, and it is estimated that that amount will maintain the Prussian army for just one day.
