THE WINE MARKET — The excited demand for champagne continues, and not only our stock on hand, but all that is on the way, is disposed of. Similar accounts we have from Philadelphia and Boston. As we justly have been expecting, the native article has grown suddenly in extraordinary favor with our champagne drinkers, and it is, as far as our accounts go, the wine of our neighbors in Pleasant Valley, Stuben County, N.Y., as well as the California wines, to which the attention of the trade has been directed. The several wine-producing companies of those places have received so many orders, that they hardly are able to execute them, and prices have consequently been raised. A cable dispatch from London, of October 19, says that the vintage has begun in the Champagne, and that the workmen are protected by the Prussians — N.Y. Wine Reporter. WATERING PLANTS IN A DRY TIME. — In case of protracted daouth, it is affirmed that surface wateeins has a tendency to draw the roots to the surface, where the greatest amount of moisture is; and hence, if the watering is neglected a single day, the roots will become dry, and the plants wilt. To avoid this result, take a crow-bar or a wood stake, sharpened and make among the plants numerous holes in the ground, six or eight inches deep; and into these pour the water from the nozzle of the watering pot, the rose being removed. Give a heavy dose, and a half hour afterwards go over the ground with the hoo, stirring and leveling the surface, then attach the rose and sprinklthe plants and the ground very slightly. If this mode of treatment is properly applied once a week, plants will not suffer in any ordinary drouth. PUT HIM OUT. — At one of the Eastern depots, travelers were very much amused recently. A passenger purchased a ticket and addressed the Agent: "Stranger I want to leave." PUT HIM OUT.—At one of the Eastern depots, travelers were very much amused recently. A passenger purchased a ticket and addressed the Agent: "Stranger, I want to leave my dog in this ere office till the train starts, I'm afraid somebody'll steal him." You can't do it," said the clerk, "take him out." "Well, stranger, that's cruel; but you're both dispositioned alike, and he's company for you." Take him out! roared the clerk. "Well stranger, I don't think you're honest; you want watching. Here, Dragoon," turning to the dog, sit down and watch that fellow sharp," and turning on his heel, he said to the clerk, "put him out, stranger, if he's troublesome." The dog remained there till the train started. A man in Meriden, N. H., recently found a swarm of wild boes in a tree, which, upon cutting the tree, yielded 160 pounds of pure honey. bound to follow.
