Society or communities, can not be afflicted with a more deplorable evil, or cursed with a more malignant scourge than the Slanderer. Contagious diseases, and epidemics have their reign for a brief period, but a faith in Divine mercy, and the application of such remedies as God in his wisdom has placed in the hands of the skillful and scientific, deprives them of the power of inspiring that fear and dread which all experience who are exposed to the poisonous influence of the tongue of the slanderer. Assasin-like they deliver their thrusts in secret, under cover of darkness, and the innocent victims of their malice, receives a fatal wound before he is aware of the presence of a foe. No one is beyond their reach, the high and the lowly, the virtuous and innocent, of every age and sex are alike subject to the infamous attacks of this curse of society. Even the sacred confines of the tomb are invaded, and the memory of a departed friend or relative, whom death has rendered incapable of resenting a foul calumnily, reflecting on their former character, is mercilessly maligned, and falsely represented. Morally and physically a coward, the slanderer never makes a direct attack by which he can be held amenable to the laws, but from some secure position he singles out his victim, and by means of well-conceived inundoes, and malignant fabrications circulated in secret, the unfortunate individual whose character has been stained by the pestilential breath of the slanderer, becomes an object of suspicion, is shunned by society and doomed to disgrace without knowing for what or why. Cowardly and dishonest, the slanderer, aware of his own deficiencies morally and mentally, attempts to build a reputation for himself at the expense of others; but by a decree of a just Providence, slanders often over reach themselves, and their excreted spite, venom and malice, is only cast forth to rebound to their own discomfiture and its one substance. The lowest, most depraved, degraded, and abhorrent object which crawls viper like over the earth, cursed with the instinct and evil passion of the devil, and bearing some outward semblance to humanity, is a detected slanderer. Engulfed and entangled in the foul and poisonous atmosphere of its own breath, despised, jeered, scorned by man, who detects its presence by the same means that he traces the course of a snail—by its slime—it is shunned and considered beneath his notice—too insignificant to castigate, the detected slanderer is let severely alone, for the same reason that we refuse to disturb acess pool, or shun an engagement with a skunk, the more we stir them the more offensive they are.—[Santa Clara Index. The Fortifications of Paris.—The fortifications of Paris were constructed in the reign of Louis Phillippe. They consist of bastioned and terraced walls; faced with masonry, and surrounded by a ditch of a breadth varying from 60 to 100 feet. The general outline is of an irregular oval form, nearly twenty-two miles in circumference, and enclosing an area of nineteen thousand two hundred and seventy-two acres, or eighty miles, and a population of one million and a half persons. The axis of the oval from north to south is nine thousand seven hundred yards, and that from east to west is twelve thousand three hundred yards. Around the encite, or ciruit of the wall, are ninety-four angular forts, with areas of about three hundred and thirty-eight square yards each. There are, besides, seventeen casemen-ted fortresses, located at the principal approaches, and connected by sunken roads. Inside the walls a carriage way is laid out, and also a circular railway, connecting all the railroad lines running into Paris. At various points in the wall there are sixty-five entrances, PRESERVED GRAPES — The San Francisco Bulletin says: Lusk, a well known fruit grower, of Oakland, claims to have discovered a method by which grapes may be preserved for a long time, without losing their fullness, freshness or flavor. The grapes are not packed away in bunches, but are placed singly in layers. A recent examination of a sample lot put up some years ago, resulted very favorably—the fruit looking as bright and clear as any that was offering in the market. CHAMPAGNE, it is believed, will be very scarce for several years, in consequence of the districts producing that wine and the great depots of Rheims and Challons, with their millions of bottles, having been occupied by the German armies. This year's vintage is destroyed, and the damage to the owners of the vineyards, the wine-makers, and the merchants, it is calculated, will exceed $20,000,000. Of course—the Champagne wines will still be produced and in greater abundance than ever, so that the manufacturers of oider will profit by the war. Why have widows the right to flirt? Because the Bible says the widow's mite. A polite young man in New York requested a married lady to elope with him. She referred him to her husband, who roke his neck. PREUSS' DRUG STORE.
