Fashions for Americans
FEATHERS that droop or trail at the side, front, or back of the hat have been regarded as quite the thing in trimming this season, and the sketch at the top of the group of accessories shown indicates one of the possibilities of the long trailing feather. It is slipped through a slash in the soft crown of the large hat, which is of velvet, duvetyn, or other soft material, and supplies the chapeau's only real decoration.
Spring millinery is now very much to the fore in the minds of designers and milliners, winter headgear now being of interest only to the retainer. One of the advance spring millinery notes heralds the fact that a very shiny satin, designated slipper satin because it is of the exact texture of the satin used to cover slippers, is to be very much featured in the making of hats. Coque and other uncurled feathers are liked as a trimming for these satin hats.
Today's sketch also shows one of the popular present-season types of evening slippers, combining black velvet and a rich metal brocade.
The hair ornament is a very lovely and dainty affair, really a wreath or crown of gold tissue leaves lightly mounted on a wire or ribbon.
The girdle shown is a twisted metal affair finished at either end with an oriental ornament. These scarabs and sphynx heads are featured in other smart girdles which are formed by joining two rather heavy metal chains, with the oriental ornaments set at intervals the entire length of the girdle.
The newest of bead girdles are made of very small beads in gorgeous colorings woven into net or cloth so that in appearance they form a fabric much like the long popular beaded necklace.
