BUILDING OF SCHOOLS
AID TO UNEMPLOYED
Figures made public by the presidents conference on unemployment show that an enormous amount of school construction is under way and that a larger additional amount has been authorized as one of the means to give immediate relief to the nation's unemployed.
According to the National Education association new school buildings are going up or contracts are about to be let to the amount of $20,535,280, which will provide much needed seating capacity for 86,271 pupils. Reports from nearly every state indicate that building is being speeded up and that new school enterprises are fast assuming workable shape.
He Burles His Savings Then Can't Find Them
DENVER, Colo., Dec. 28—Mike Felick, a guest at a rooming house, decided to return to Russia, his native land.
To be sure he would get his money before the banks went broke, he drew his lifetime savings, amounting to $1090, from the bank.
But where am I going to hide this money until I get ready for the trip?" mused Mike.
He solicited the aid of Al Cooper, a friend, living at 2F20 West Fourteenth avenue. During the night while Cooper and his family were asleep, Mike dug a hole beneath Cooper's front porch and buried the money.
Next day he returned to find the hidden money missing. He immediately reported the matter to the police, and in the meantime, Mike will be forced to stay in Denver.

Woman Refused To Go Fifty-Fifty on Hubby
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 28.—Charging that her husband a few hours after their marriage at San Rafael on August 14, 1920, requested her to share his affections with a woman with whom he said he had been living for five years, Laura E. Millzner of 2429A Ellaworth street, Berkeley, was granted an interlocutory decree of divorce from Lionel R. Milzner by Superior Court Judge John J. Van No stand and restored to her maiden name of Laura E. Simmons.
Mrs. Millzner testified that she refused to accede to the 50-50 division of her spouse and also declined to live with him after the ceremony, although he continually importuned her to grant his request.
Leaves $50,000 To Man Who Mended Trouseres
CHICAGO, Dec. 28.—A few stitches taken in a pair of torn trousers 34 years ago has netted Archbold Birse, a tailor, $50,000. The money represents the residue of the estate of Ernest de St. Giles, insurance expert and author. According to the story told by Birse, thirty-four years ago Mr. St. Giles came to Chicago and embarked upon his insurance venture. He found himself one day penniless and with a ragged rent in his trousers. He went to Birse and asked him to sew up the rent in the trousers. Birse did so. The charge was 50 cents. St. Giles returned a few days later with the money, thus beginning a friendship that culminated only in his death and resulted in the bequest.

Fists and Gun Greet Burglar Who Escapes
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 28.—No trace has been found yet of the burglar who engaged in a gun battle and fistic encounter with J. Petalina, who found the man in his home, 811 Castellar street, early yesterday morning. Petalina told the police that he heard a noise in his home, so slipped out of bed quietly and tiptoed into the next bedroom. He hid from the window and then pounced on the intruder when he climbed inside. The burglar was heavier than Petalina and freed himself. The house owner then ran to his room and secured a revolver with which he opened fire.
The thief replied with his gun, but no casualties were reported. Nothing was taken as the house-breaker didn't have time to ransack the place.

Bill Provides Funds For San Francisco Bay
WASHINGTON, Dec. 28. An appropriation of $1,371,450 for improvements to the Oakland, Berkeley and Albany harbor in San Francisco bay was recommended to Congress yesterday by the rivers and harbors engineers. The proposed improvements consist largely in deepening and widening the channels at Cakia land, both in the inner and outer harbors. The engineers suggest that the first part of the appropriation should be $460,000 on which the work could be started, the remainder to be added so that the entire project could be completed in four years.

Hunter Finds Mash Good Bait For Foxes
BLUEFIELDS, W. Va., Dec. 28. John Arms, a hunter, has sprung a big new idea on fox hunters of this section. It is to scatter mash from moonshine whisky about, thereby making the capture of the game easy. While hunting on the East River Mountain, Arms came upon three large gray foxes that, as he put it, were "as drunk as boiled owls." They paid no attention to Arms, he said, but instead staggered about and fell over one another. Arms supposed the animals had been poisoned, but upon investigation, discovered a pile of mash nearby. It was evident the animals had been eating the mash and got "stewed."
Army Mules Fed On Bricks Thrive in Test
NEW YORK, Rec. 28. The army horse and the mule, too, face another war horror, this time in the form of gastronomical tests. They are being fed "horse bricks." Army officers declared, however, they are not as bad as the name implies, for they are made of the finest grade oats with about 13 per cent pure cane molasses for food value. Each brick equals four quarts of oats.
"The animal appears to be thriving on the new "fodder," said an official statement.
