The will states that the women shall be unmarried, not more than 30 years of age, white British subjects, residents of the commonwealth, and not offsprings of first cousins. In deciding the fitness of any candidate, the will directs that the following considerations must be taken into account: Her physical excellence and her freedom from any hereditary taint; her brightness and cheerfulness of disposition; and the fact that she is a person who may be calculated to bear healthy children. Her knowledge and understanding of the main elements of the history of the British empire, and her knowledge of English literature; and Her knowledge of the main functions of the human body, and her ability to ride a horse. HENS MUST LAY 88 EGGS A YEAR TO PAY EXPENSE Each egg cost a certain farmer in Fremont county, Colorado, one and ninety-nine hundredths cents, or twenty-three and eight-tenthhs cents a dozen during the last year. On this same farm it cost the farmer $1.25 to feed one bird, 47 cents labor to care for a hen, 27 cents housing cost, 47 cents capital cost and 7 cents for equipment, or a total cost of $2.54 to take care of each bird. The birds produced an average of 172 eggs each in a year, which made an income of $5.17 per hen, or a profit of $2.63 per bird, over 16 cents per dozen eggs. Each hen had to produce 83 eggs to pay for her keep during the year. This farmer's stock was in recent Fremont county egg-laying contest. The farmer, with six others, in co-operation with County Agent Taylor and the county farm bureau, kept records for the year. The farm has a flock of seventy birds which is near the average sized farm flock in the state, but is above the average in production, says F. J. Chase, farm management demonstrator of the Agricultural college. Farmers in the state can bring their poultry up to this standard by simple records, and using ordinary care in management along with the feed furnished by the farm. ALL BRIGHT COLORS ANNOYING TO BULLS According to popular belief, it is dangerous to wave a red flag in front of a bull. The bull is supposed to have a peculiar hatred for anything red, so that a man wearing a red shirt would be a poor life insurance risk crossing a pasture containing a bull. However, it is doubtful if red enrages a bull any more than green, brown or any other color. Most bulls are of an inquisitive turn of mind, and anything they see which is unfamiliar easily excites their curiosity and their peanuts contain the richest of foods, about 50 per cent of oil and 30 per cent of protein. Between meat substitutes, peanut butter and oils, his lowly nut was able through chemistry to increase the wealth of the south some $56,000,000 in 1916 alone. One hundred and fifty million dollars a year has been added to cotton's value by the discovery of ways of turning into oil the cottonseeds that were formerly used as fuel. From tomato seeds, once the discarded refuse of the canning factories, 22 per cent of an edible oil can now be extracted. Punpkin seeds, poppy seeds, tobacco seeds, raspberry seeds, beechnuts, walnuts, hazelnuts and even cockelburs and acorns have proved to be available source of supply. Hollyhock oil is a new food product which the chemist has found to be nutritious and delectable fare for poultry. The African palm vies with cocoanut, cottonseed and corn kernel in the manufacturing of margarines and other compositions that are crowding out the animal fats. Five Pay-Roll and Bank Robbery Suspects Seized EAST ST. LOUIS., Ill., Dec. 28. With a special police detail guarding headquarters four men were held yesterday and a fifth suspect was at liberty on bond in connection with the $95,000 payroll robbery of the Peabody Coal and Mine Company at Kincaid, Ill., last August, and the $11,200 robbery of the Dupo State Bank at Dupo last Friday. The special guard was thrown around police headquarters following rumors that attempts would be made to deliver the men from the jail. Usually the early bird catches the worm for the little fellows who stayed at home. Ben Baxter, contractor, 266W. Adv. France to Choose Time In Paying, Says Doumer PARIS, Dec. 28—Minister of Finance Doumer, speaking in the senate recently, contested Senator Cheron's estimate of the total debt of France which placed the foreign debt at 335,006,000,000 francs. Senator Cheron is chairman of the senate budget committee. "I think that no one has asked me," declared M. Douner, to liquidate our debts abroad at the present value of franc. We will choose our time." At the normal rate of exchange, M. Douner estimated, the total French debt would be about 290,000,000 francs. Soldier Slayer Wins Shorter Prison Term LEAVENWORTH, Kan., Dec. 28—Darry Kincaid, "life termer," at the federal penitentiary here, received Christmas clemency in the form of commutation of sentence to fifteen years, it has been announced. Kincaid was convicted by courtmartial overseas on a charge of murder. He was a sergeant in an engineer department. Italian King Makes Diaz Duke of Victory ROME, Dec. 28—King Victor Manuel conferred Monday the title "Duke of Victory" upon General Armando Diaz, commander of the Italian armies during the war. The title will be hereditary. ANNUTING TO BULLS According to popular belief, it is dangerous to wave a red flag in front of a bull. The bull is supposed to have a peculiar hatred for anything red, so that a man wearing a red shirt would be a poor life insurance risk crossing a pasture containing a bull. However, it is doubtful if red enrages a bull any more than green, brown or any other color. Most bulls are of an inquisitive turn of mind, and anything they see which is unfamiliar easily excites their curiosity and their anger. The reason perhaps that red stiles the bull to action more quickly than any other color is that he can see it more plainly. Anything of a bright red is more noticeable than is of plainer color, and so the bull's curiosity and anger are aroused. If there is anything about red that excites the bull more than any other color simply because of the color, scientists have been unable to determine it. Seagulls Are Enemies Of English Sparrows The Pacific coast seagull conducts an eternal warfare against the English sparrows, and because of it keeps wharves and docks free of this noise and litter so predominant around sparrows' households. Observers declare some older gulls act as sentinels, and when a sparrow alights on a wharf roof several immediately chase it away. On one occasion recently in Seattle a lone sparrow flew seaward followed by half a dozen gulls, who kept the tiny bird so hotly pursued it fell into the water exhausted. Wharf operatives are grateful to the gulls for this bit of police work. As English sparrows once inhabiting the rafters and overhead work inside the docks would produce an amazing amount of litter to fall into freight and express shipments.
