"BIRD OF PARADISE" OPENS THIS WEEK AT MASON OPERA HOUSE For a season to go by without the Mason Opera House offering its clientele Richard Walton Tully's perennial favorite, "The Bird of Paradise," would be like failing to celebrate some national-or civic event. "The Bird of Paradise" with its fascinating appeal returns to the Mason Opera House as the Christmas week attraction, commencing Monday matinee, December 22. The Tully drama has earned its place with such wonderful stage successes as "Ben Hur," "In Old Kentucky" and "Way Down East," which are norms for all that is appealing and entertaining in the theater. This mystic play of the South Pacific preserves in dramatic form the vanishing customs, beliefs and legends of Hawaii. Against a background of unique beauty is lived a powerful story of two men and two women. The sunny is vested with singular charm, chiefly by the mode of living of the many native characters. The exotic settings, the native dancing and the religious ceremonies introduced, add an element of picturesqueness. To those who toll, who know the grininess of rigorous cold, the sternborn resistance of life, that nature, and soil, and social complications offer in the lands of civilization, the picture of the mid-Pacific islands with its eternal sunshine, its color and warmth will always attract. One of the compelling charms of this play is the ever present weirdly sweet music that steals out of the silences and forces its appeal to deeper emotionalism, giving peace to troubled souls and a sweeter breath to the island love. Interest in the engagement this years centers in Ann Reader, the new Tally "find" who plays the role of Luana, the island princess. A very capable company of new players surround Miss Reader, which includes Herbert Charles, Frederick Forrester, Ellen Maher, Rose Watson, Frank I. Coolay, James K. Appelbeck, Reba Cardon, Douglas Congrove and the chanting Hawaiians, whose native songs and dances enhance the exotic atmosphere of the performance. CAR OWNERS PLACE CONFIDENCE IN OLD FIRMS, SAYS DEALER During the war, many factories and businesses were organized that were given a foothold by the lack of supplies for our military and our inflated industrial needs. These companies are sure to feel the changing conditions severely and doubtless endeavor to sustain their position on the basis of a "price" competition. And this means price without regard to quality. "Many motorists especially," says Mr. Bevillard of the Anaheim Ignition Depot, who handles Willard batteries here. "find themselves in a quandry now as to the proper course to pursue when buying automobile equipment. They are tempted by the "cheap" argument but still have confidence in the old established factors who have developed reputations or quality products. This is the case with Willard batteries, prices of which have always been kept at the lowest possible level consistent with a quality articles that has a reputation to maintain." "The price reduction announced for December 20 is due," says Mr. Bevillard, "solely to the lowered costs of materials and operating expenses of the Willard factory, where every possible feature for economical production and elimination of waste is utilized. No one could be expected to produce better products than the older companies like the Willard Company are doing." American Chief For Reichsbank Proposed PARIS, Dec. 27.—An American superintendent for the Reichsbank was one of the propositions discussed by Premiers Brandon and Lloyd George at their conference in London early in the week, according to the Temps. With the idea of giving the institution an autonomous regime, the paper adds, Germany would be given at the same time a fixed date to put necessary fiscal reforms into effect. Pussyfoot Back in U. S. MILLING ASSOCIATION SENDS OUT USEFUL CALENDAR A recent publication contains the following sentence: "The farmer must receive a reward commensurate with his efforts and responsibility." No one will deny the truth of this statement. The problem is to find out just what reward the farmer or producer is receiving for his work. The United States department of agriculture has for years been endeavoring to help the producer keep such records as will show what it costs him to produce. Various state agricultural colleges are uniting with the department of agriculture in this work. This is especially true in our own state. This is a most worthy under Pussyfoot' Back in U. S. To Train for New Drive WASHINGTON, Dec. 27.—William H. "Pussyfoot" Johnson, who has been touring England, Europe and India in an effort to make the world a drier place to live in, came back to America Friday on the Adriotic from Paris. "Pussyfoot" is going home to Iowa for a much needed rest. Then, he says, he is going to New Zealand, which, he hears, is very, very wet. Describing his tour of India, he said: "I was greeted like a prince everywhere I went." Morse Will Allow U. S. Jury Access to Books WASHINGTON, Dec. 27.—Charles W. Morse, New York shipbuilder under fire for his wartime activities, Friday agreed to turn over the books of all his shipping concerns for examination by the federal grand jury probing his operations. Morse also agreed to waive immunity rights, which he had previously demanded. This action was taken when Morse's attorneys asked the District of Columbia court for permission to withdraw a petition filed yesterday in which the shipper asked an injunction against use of his books in the investigation. Arbuckle Trial May Be Delayed Until Jan. 16 SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 27.—Roscoe "Fat," Arbuckle may not go on trial for a second time for manslaughter until January 16. When the jury disagreed in his first trial January 9 was set as the date of the new trial. Friday afternoon District Attorney Brady announced that if agreeable to both sides a continuance until January 16 might be arranged, although he was ready to go to trial January 9 if the defense desired. Smuggling Of Diamonds Into U. S. Is Increasing OASHINGTON., Dec. 27.—The smuggling of diamonds and other precious stones into the United States by passengers on incoming liners and also across the border is being carried on extensively. R. G. Monroe, a diamond importer of New York City, testified Friday before the senate finance Committee at hearings on the permanent tariff bill. He urged that Congress reduce the duty on diamonds so as to lessen the incentive for evasion of the law. ANNOUNCEMENTS HAZARD & MILLER—Oldest agency in Southern California. H.
