Friday, December 23, 1921. U. S. Congress Declares Recess Over Holidays WASHINGTON, Dec. 23.—Congress recessed late yesterday until January 3, for the Christmas and New Year holidays. The house adjourned at 4 o'clock and the senate at 4:50. All business will be suspended during the recess except for tariff hearings by the senate finance committee. BUY IT IN ANAHEIM Senate Confirms Burke As U. S. Attorney Here WASHINGTON, Dec. 23.—The Senate late yesterday confirmed the nomination of Joseph O. Burke of Santa Ana to be United States attorney for the Southern district of California. The Senate also confirmed the nomination of Elmer Dover of Tacoma to be assistant Secretary of the Treasury, and the nomination of Edward O. MURPHY WINS ON FOUL DENVER, COLO., Dec. 23.—Frankie Murphy, Denver featherweight won on a foul from Morris Schlaifer, Omaha, in the fifth round of a scheduled 12 round bout here last night. Bennie Garcia gained the decision over Charley McCarty, St. Paul lightweight, when the latter broke a small bone in his right hand and was forced to quit. ECKERSALL TO REFEREE GAME WASHINGTON, Dec. 23.—Walter Eckersall, former University of Chicago star; George Varnell, Pacific coast referee, and C. H. Huebel have been selected to officiate in the inter-sectional game between Washington and Jefferson and California at Pasadena, January 2. Selection of the fourth official by California was being awaited here. BANK ROBBERS GET $3100 PISGAH, Iowa, Dec. 23.—Two masked bandits this morning held up the state bank here, forced two officers of the bank and five customers into the vault and escaped in an automobile with $3100 in cash and an unknown amount of liberty bonds. Posses are in pursuit of the men, who are believed to be fleeing to Omaha. DENVER MILLIONAIRE DEAD DENVER, Colo., Dec. 23.—Joseph Fitz-Owen Brind, 71, Denver millioaire manufacturer, died here suddenly late last night following a stroke of paralysis. Brind had been in the limelight for several years because of his matrimonial entanglements. The widow who survives him is his fourth wife. ALLEGED MOONSHINER KILLED ANTIGO, Wis., Dec. 23.—Rum war loomed here today as reinforcements were rushed to the aid of prohibition agents. One alleged moonshiner is dead and two others charged with trafficking in illicit liquor were in jail. ... Trouble seemed probable between prohibition agents and the opposition as the result of the fatal shooting of Julius Wurzer yesterday. He was shot in a gun duel with authorities near his cabin at Elton. HARVEY CHURCH TO HANG CHICAGO, Dec. 23.—Harvey Church today was found guilty of the brutal murder of Carl Ausmus and B. J. Daugherty, motor car salesmen. Judge Caverly sentenced the youth to be hanged. Date of execution was not set. Church lured the two salesmen to his home and murdered them with a club. His motive, testimony said, was to obtain possession of an auto. His defense was insanity. PETE HERMAN BADLY BEATEN NEW YORK, Dec. 23.—Pete Herman started home to New Orelans today minus a lot of his championship aspirations. The former bantam king, in the attempt to win back the crown, lost a 15-round decision and was badly beaten here last night by Midget Smith in Madison Square Garden. Ford Motor Company Denies Price Drop George Dunton, Anaheim distributor for the Ford and Fordson, received a telegram yesterday from the Ford Motor Company denying quotations and rumors published in recent newspaper articles stating that there is to be a drop in price January 1, 1922. The Ford Motor Company states that there is no foundation to such rumors and that they are not contemplating and price changes. Police Auto, Chasing O'Connor, Kills Man CHICAGO, Dec. 23.—The police today unofficially "chalked up" another death against "Tommy" O'Connor, Chicago mankiller, who escaped from the county jail here five days before he was to have been executed for the slaying of a Chicago detective, Charles Weweer, 56 years old, a saloonkeeper, died last night of injuries received December 13 when he was struck by a police department automobile conveying a squad of detectives on a false O'Connor trail. O'Connor is still at large. SAN DIEGO WELCOMES PRAYING COLONELS EARLY TODAY SAN DIEGO, Dec. 23.—The prayin' colonoa from Danville, Ky., arrived here early today, but it was not too early for a large delegation of natives to turn out to welcome them. The colonels went at once to Coronado, where they will hibernate until the hour of the big game with Arizona on Monday and endavior to dodge entertainment committees. The entire team is fit and ready for a hard game, Coach Moran declared. They will limber up in practice some time today at the Polo grounds, Coronado. Arizona's Wildcats leave tonight for San Diego and will arrive here early tomorrow. Only optimistic reports have filtered out of Tucson since the team went into training for the Centre game. The desert warriors are said to be tough and they don't care how big a team they are called on to tackla. San Diego is football mad. The biggest crowd in local sport annals is expected out for the game. The women of Spain are credited with being the best dancers. An excellent equivalent of nothing is an interview with Madalynne.
