WIFE'S BOOZE GIFT DROVE MAN WILD L. A. COURT IS TOLD LOS ANGELES, Dec. 21.—Drinks of liquor from a quart given for a birthday present caused no end of trouble for Paul Luera, according to testimony before Judge Hahn yesterday, where Luera is suing his wife, Tomasa Luera, to recover real estate valued at $5000. The wife said that her husband signed a contract giving her the property on his birthday. He asserted; however, that he could not recall the gift. He testified his wife gave him, as a birthday present, a quart of whisky and that he took several drinks. The last he remembered is starting on a wild run down the street from his home. He awoke in the morning, he said; in the city jail, with a terrible headache. He testified he learned that during the time his mind was a blank, he had chopped down the door of his mother-in-law's house with an ax and gone for a wild ride in an automobile. He denied, however, that he was drunk. The trial was resumed today... SUDS AND DUDS of the SANITARY LAUNDRY FULLERTON PHONE OR WRITE US! We'll surprise you with our speed... And our work... SINN FEIN DELEGATES FORCED TO SIGN TREATY, WORD DUBLIN, Dec. 21.—The Sinn Fein peace delegates were forced by Lloyd George's "monstrous iniquity" to sign the Anglo-Irish treaty, George Duffy, a delegate who signed the pact, charged in the Irish parliament today. "I am not apologizing for my signature," he cried, "but I desire to tell the manner in which the treaty was extorted." Lloyd George threatened the peace delegates with war if they did not sign. Duffy said. "The British premier first broke with us definitely on December 4, subject to the approval of his cabinet." Duffy said. Duggan Denies Coercion Eamon J. Duggan, who also signed the treaty, recommended its acceptance by the Dail, but denied the delegates had been coerced by Lloyd George. "We were sent to London to negotiate an agreement with Britain, not to negotiate a republic." He said. "I do not like the treaty, but I know the alternative—war." "I am sure the pact will give us full control of our country." Despite the fact that the delegates were compelled to sign, Duffy said he recommended immediate ratification of the pact by the Dail. Duffy Recommended Treaty "I reluctantly but sincerely recommended passage of this treaty," he said, "and I solemnly warn you of the consequences of rejection." Duffy denounced both the men who have been attacking the treaty as a valueless arrangement and those who have been praising it as perfect. He took the attitude that as it already has been signed it should be ratified without further words. “This treaty gives us real power—military power, economic and governmental power—the power to resist future aggression,” he said. Football is the topic on all sides here today, even overshadowing talk of the well-known Santa Claus. Arizona's chances to puncture the Centre line on December 26 is a much mooted question and the comparative field generalship of McMillan and Slonaker is overshadowing the price of holly. The Centre team has reached the coast and the Arizona warriors are due to start westward tomorrow. Both teams will work out in Los Angeles between trains. While the demand for tickets is lively the football committee announced there are still plenty of the coveted pasteboards at all prices. Your Money's Worth! ANAHEIM DAILY HERALD MAN GETS GOAT GLAUD WOMAN GETS DIVORCE SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 21.—The "goat gland" appeared in divorce court annals for the first time yesterday when Mrs. Mary Heavey of this city was granted a decree from Terence Heavey, Southern Pacific railroad employee. Mrs. Heavey testified before Judge Troutt that her husband had become interested in the gland theory when it first was discussed several years ago. More recently hunting, like Ponce de Leon, for the Fountain of Youth, he had gone to the St. Francis hospital and sustained the goat gland operation. Mrs. Heavey testified that the knowledge of the operation had caused her extreme humiliation and mental suffering. She asked for recognition of the results as a form of cruelty. Mrs. Heavey was given the custody of two of her four children. Martin Madsen, executive secretary, speaking for Governor Stephens, declared today. According to Madsen no immediate action will be taken.
