News Notes of the Oil Fields The Standard Oil Company for the first time in two years has only two wells actually drilling at Richfield. Kraemer 2-16 at 4350 is showing lots of oil and gas and will probably be another big well for the Standard and Sam Kraemer. Kraemer 2-17 stands cemented at 3940. Kellogg No. 2 deepening is close to 4000 feet in hard sand. The Selby-Root-Hogue Oil Company overcame a big difficulty at No. 3 and set the 8 inch at 2996. No. 7 the only drilling well now running, is at 2875 in hard sand. Selby-Root-Hogue production now runs as follows: No. 1 175 barrels, No. 2 400 barrels and No. 5 175 barrels. At Wents Syndicate No. 2, the log shows 2645 feet, three hundred feet of hole being made during the past week. The Wonder Co., Ltd., started well No. 4 last week, and the hole now shows 600 feet of hole. No. 2 at 4382 is on a production test and so far is pumping water. No. 3 at 3077 is standing idle. At 4305 feet the Union Oil Company completed Chapman No. 19 and brought the new well in a three thousand barrel producer. The oil sand was struck in this well at 2868 and was still running when drilling stopped at 4305. Three other wells, Chapman No. 5 at 4196, Chapman No. 11 at 3427, and Chapman No. 14 are all in the oil sand and will be coming in soon. Chapman No. 20 set 10 inch at 3382. No. 1 is wavering some on production, running all the way from 2 to 5 hundred. No. 2 is holding steadily at 875, and the big well. No. 6 stands consistently at 1400 barrels. Other Union developments in the Richfield district includes three wells drilling on the Thompson-Goodwin, one well on the McFadden, one on the Dickson, one well on the Yorba, two wells on the Coyle, two wells on the Stern, two wells on the Ayers-Parsons, two on the Shanklin, one on the Dorsey and one on the Yorba Linda Group. Drilling on Domingues No. 1 is now at 2200 in sand and boulders. On the Petifills property the General Petroleum completed rigging up and started drilling today. The Union Oil Company's Francis No. 1 is now drilling at 3200 feet in brown sandy shale. Drilling is going nicely and showings are encouraging. Sommers No.1 at Gardena still stands idle at 4553. So far the Kitselman Oil Company has met with no success at Hawthorne. Bohon No. 2, drilled to 1365, is redrilling at 950. Hicks No. 3, drilled to 4002 and plugged back to 3920, failed to make anything but a little water. At Playa Del Rey the casing froze at 1750 and now the rotary is to be converted into a gas well when the water broke in on it. LOS ANGELES Drilling on the Eddystone Oil Company's Burkhart is now at 4228, and the formation while in brown shale is not showing any oil. The six inch casing is going in and drilling will proceed. The Beatty Oil Company's Eagle Rockwell is now drilling at 2665 and is making hole in soap stone. An oil sand is looked for under this soap stone. Will it be there? Considerable excitement has been renewed at Buena Park with the report that the Standard Oil Company had leased the Scoffield property south of Buena Park and is negotiating for other properties. The available holdings are the Bastody, Schumacker and the Bacon ranches. One report has it that it was "big business" that induced the Petroleum Midway to quit at Buena Park some three or four months ago. With the water shut off this well is scheduled to make 200 barrels. Republic No. 1 continues to be one o' the stand-bys of the field, producing daily at 650. The Rhoads Oil Company cleaned out No. 2 down to 2378 and increased the production from 100 barrels to 200 barrels. No. 1 stands recemented at 2263. No. 3 has been cleaned out and is going back on the beam. The Rio Bravo Oil Company has just brought in and put on production its No. 2. Drilled to 2360 feet and the ten inch set at 2280, this well is producing about 200 barrels. Bob McKeon drilled the well. The Sandburg Petroleum's No. 1, recently taken over by R. W. Edens, has been recemented at 2178. Drilling will resume in a few days and oil well made out of it. The Standard Oil Company's B-2, completed at 4250 feet and now producing 450 barrels of 28 gravity oil, proves up a big area for the southwest section of the field. Huntington B-2 is the closest good producer to the ocean. The only other well in the field making 28 gravity oil is Bolsa. No. 4, a recent completion at 2550 and producing 850 barrels. Bolsa No. 5 is drilling at 2000 and No. 6 is rigging up for the rotary. On the Huntington A lease Nos. 7 and 9 stand cemented at 2790 and 2535. A-13 is fishing for drill pipe at 2881. A-14 and 16 stand cemented at 2023 and 2180, respectively. No. 15 is bailing for test at 2804. Drilling on B-5 is at 2250, and B-6 set 10 inch at 2555. B-7 is drilling at 2600 and No. 8 is building rig. Lumber is on the ground for B-9. D-1 stands cemented at 2664. E-1 is drilling at 2700, and E-3 at 2700. E-4 stands cemented at 2263. The shutting off of the water at 2828 was one of the most difficult propositions ever undertaken in the Montebello field. It is believed the Arcadia will have things in its favor now. The Comanche Oil Company has the La Merced Manly drilling at 2775 and the drilling is going the best. The Comanche will develop the deep sand in this well and duplicate the St. Helens' Eggleston well. The Keeler Oil Company's No. 2 drilled recently to 3885 is making 275 barrels of 24 gravity oil and is as good a well as the Montebello field has produced for some time. Both the Pan-American and Potter Oil Companies have sidetracking jobs on the Pan American at 3200 and the Potter at 3055. Prugh No.9 rose to expectations and came in a 400 barrel well. This new well was completed at 3552 and is making 24 gravity oil. The output of the big Eggleston producer is varying but little. After two months on production the well is making 1400 daily. Of this amount 875 barrels is net oil. Monterey No.4 is drilling by pipe at 2650, No.6 at 2775 is in brown shale, and No.7 shows sandy shale at 2400. P & B. No.1 is still held up with pipe trouble, some 4 in. was lost at 3425. The Standard Oil Company drilling at Howard-Smith No.1 is making hole at 2450, the digging is in hard sand and goes a little slow. Baldwin No.59 shows 3100 feet and No.60 is rigging up. After several months spent in re-drilling and sidetracking the Western Pacific is making new hole. Drilling is now at 3245 in brown sand shale. The Western Pacific is trying for the deep sand. Mechanical trouble developed at the Union Oil Company's La Merced No.10 to the extent that 1700 feet of hole was abandoned. The rig moved to location No.25. No.9 at 3063 also developed some mechanical trouble and is being abandoned. La Merced No.10 now on production is making 90 barrels. WHITTIER AND SANTA FEE SPRINGS stand, cemented at 2790 and 2535. A-13 is fishing for drill pipe at 288f. A-14 and 16 stand cemented at 2023 and 2180, respectively. No. 15 is balling for test at 2804. Drilling on B-5 is at 2250, and B-6 set 10 inch at 2355. B-7 is drilling at 2600 and No. 8 is building rig. Lumber is on the ground for B-9. D-1 stands cemented at 2664. E-1 is drilling at 2700, and E-3 at 2700. E-4 stands cemented at 2263. Thompson No. 1, now drilling deeper, is at 3100 in sandy shale. The properties and wells formerly known as George E. Cloud and the California Machinery and Supply Company are henceforth to be known as the Thomas Syndicate. No. 1 is cleaning out and going on production at 2345. No. 2 spudded in and shows 300 feet of hole. Sun No. 4 broke loose a few days ago and started flowing 175 barrels a day. This is the biggest unaided production the well has ever made. Drilling at Sun No. 3 is now at 2850. It is the intention to stop at this point and try the well out for production. Vista Del Mar No. 2 at 2735 showed some water in the recent production test and was recemented. Drilling out will be done before the end of the week and another production test instituted. Failure after two months of fishing to clear the hole resulted in a decision on the part of the Wellington Oil Company to move the rig and start a new well. NEWPORT AND SAN JOAQUIN HILLS In spite of the fact that the Leguna Beach Oil Association struck hot salt water at 3260, drilling has resumed and hole is now being made at 3359. At this point the six inch is to be set and cemented. It is the intention to continue drilling and make a deep test well. Drilling on the Nu Santa is now close to 2700 feet, the formation continues to run in blue shale. Some showings of importance were reported at 2550. The Wuchere and Gray interests have four wells drillings near Balboa, Wucherer-Gray No. 1 is close to 3000 feet and will set pipe soon. W.A.G. No. 1 at 3000 stands cemented, ten inch. The W.G.R. Petroleum Company has spudded in and shows 600 feet of hole. The San Joaquin Oil Company has spudded in and made 200 feet of hole. Four wells drilling Pacific is making new hole. Drilling is now at 3245 in brown sandy shale. The Western Pacific is trying for the deep sand. WHITTIER AND SANTA FEE SPRINGS The Bandini Petroleum is scheduled to drill out the cement and test for water today. Cemented through the perforations at 3602 a job is expected, and with the water shut off a producer is practically assured. The Central Oil Company is developing the old field at Whittier rather heavily for a small company. Four wells, No. 66 at 2200, No. 67 at 1975, 68 at 2635, and No. 72 at 450 feet are drilling. At 2985 the Southern California's Sanderson No. 1 continues good enough to predict a producer within the next 100 feet. The drilling in brown sandy shale and the formation is carrying gas in quantity. The Whittley Oil Company at 3375 struck a light sand in No. 6 that carries some gas and oil colors. Drilling deeper on No. 5 is in progress and the 6 inch is being drilled by at 2455. The outlook at the Standard Oil Company's Garden Grove well is a little better than it has ever been before at close to 4800 feet. However, the formation is only encouraging thing, the brown shale. There seems to be little hope for commercial production now at Garden Grove. The La Habra Midway has gotten under way again and is drilling at 1925 in brown sandy shale. Under reamer cutters breaking off and falling in the hole has blocked progress for a week or more. SANTA FE SPRINGS The Amalgamated's Butterworth No. 2 is drilling at 1875 and is making a record run for hard drilling. Rigging up on the Delluge lease is under way and drilling will start in a few days. The Chandler-Canfield Midway according to the announcement made Dangerous Corner Brings Protest From Auto Club The Automobile Club of Orange County is still looking for opportunities to safeguard the lives and property of the motoring public. The latest step taken by the officers in their safety campaign has been to take up the matter of the northern end of Main street, Santa Ana, with both the county board of supervisors and the state highway commission. “This corner has been the scene of a number of accidents,” said A. S. Ralph, manager of the automobile club, in an interview. “Not that our club has suffered any great losses as its cause, but because we feel that as an institution of the motoring public it is our duty to protect them whenever possible we are going to do our very best to have this corner made absolute safe. “Investigations have shown that a great number of the accidents that have occurred here have been caused by out of town drivers, those who were not familiar with the peculiar conditions of this turn, so we have carefully studied out the best remedies and suggested them to both the highway commission and the board of supervisors. “The corner does not end in a ‘T’ shape like an ordinary turn, but branches off into a ‘Y’, making it unnecessary to slow down to the usual speed for corner turning.
