"THE CUP OF LIFE"
HAS ALL-STAR CAST
"The Cup of Life," Thomas H. Ince's latest special production for the Associated Producers, which will be featured at the California Theater starting tomorrow, is both a colorful romance of Singapore and the East Indies and a tense, stirring drama which evolves around the racial dividing line between Orient and Occidental.
From both an artistic and a dramatic standpoint, "The Cup of Life" satisfies the most critical demands. Of three, it is difficult to decide which is its outstanding feature, the excellent character portrayals of the all-star cast, which includes Hobart Bosworth, Madge Beliamy, Niles Welch, and Tully Marshall; the Oriental splendor and beauty of the settings and costumes, or the powerful and gripping dramatic situations and sequences which command the interest of the spectator.
The original story, by Carey Wilson, was adapted to the screen by Joseph Franklin Poland. Rowland V. Lee directed the feature, under the personal supervision of Thomas H. Ince.

CAR OWNERS WARNED AGAINST USE OF BATTERY DOPE
There are so many wonderful things being done every day that when a man says he has a solution of very, very secret nature, with some peculiar metal in it, which puts new life into a battery, nine out of ten people are ready to believe him without question.
FULLERTON
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Simpson of 201 North Richman avenue were in Los Angeles Thursday on business and pleasure.
Mrs. J. M. Moore and mother, Mrs. C. R. Moore of 306 West Amerige avenue were guests of friends in Santa Ana yesterday.

Announcement was made today that Ralph R. Brown, editor of the Fullerton News, has sold his interest in the paper to Elton R. Eaton, an experienced newspaper man of Kalamazoo, Mich.
The Girls' League of Fullerton high scored a very complete success with the presentation of their play, "Daddy Long Legs," in the school auditorium Thursday night.
Those taking part in the clever four-act play, which was directed by Miss Marion Helm, were the following:
Musical features were supplied by the high school orchestra, directed by H. E. Wahlberg; a chorus of girls, directed by Miss Wishard; and a double quartet of high school boys.
The committee of the league in charge of the production was composed of Marjorie Travas, Emma Johnson and Gladys Leutweller.
The Community Coral society gave its first concert Friday night at the high school auditorium. A large attendance enjoyed the program.
There were three very lovely cantatas of "Winkin Blinkin' & Nod," "Wreck of the Hesperus," and "Narcissus."

Lies To Cheer Up His Wife, Then Ends Life
CHICAGO, Dec. 16.—The last "white lie" told to his bride by George Koehn, was revealed at the inquest into his death when Deputy Coroner Peter Seese read his suicide note. It follows:
"My Dearest Evangeline—You are the only girl I could ever love, so I have lied to you for the last time. I cannot see you suffer any longer.
"I hope the next man will be a real one, one who has a little money and a good job. I have done my best to find work. Good-by and good luck to you, honey. Your untruthful husband."
Mrs. Koehn said the "last lie" was told the night before she found his body in their tiny kitchenette. The gas was turned on.
"He told me he had found work," she said, "and we spent the evening celebrating."
AGAINST USE OF BATTERY DOPE
There are so many wonderful things being done every day that when a man says he has a solution of very, very secret nature, with some peculiar metal in it, which puts new life into a battery, nine out of ten people are ready to believe him without question.
The whole scheme of battery doping seems so plausible that dozens of companies have been led to start in business manufacturing "dopes" of various sorts.
Some of these battery medicines are really harmless, and the worst that can be said about them is that they do no good—except that they relieve the car owner of five or six dollars which he might invest in gas, tires, oil, or something else more needful to the car. There are others that do actual harm by taking active material away from the battery plates and by introducing foreign substances into the battery solution.
As a result of a recent checkup on the subject of battery dopes, the Willard Storage Battery Company found that all makers of standard well known batteries are agreed upon the fact that the only satisfactory battery solution is diluted pure sulphuric acid of the proper density. Emphasis should be placed on the word "pure" for any foreign substances are liable to cause trouble in the battery. There is nothing, say these manufacturers, that will improve upon the pure solution that is put into the battery by the manufacturers and their authorized service stations.
The sum and substance of the battery builders' advice is that the way to keep a battery in condition is to put water in at regular intervals and keep it charged when necessary, and to remember that "Dope"—whatever there may be in it—can never take the place of proper attention.

Mrs. J. M. Moore and mother, Mrs. C. R. Moore of 306 West Amerige avenue were guests of friends in Santa Ana yesterday.
Miss Edith Crooke of West Amerige avenue was in Los Angeles Thursday visiting at the home of her uncle, Rev. and Mrs. W. E. Edgin.
Mrs. J. B. Beeve, 429 West Amerige avenue motored into Los Angeles today to meet her twin sister, Mrs. Lyman Tremain, who is on her way to her home in Santa Ana from a visit to the old home in New York.
Monte Jackson, truck driver for the Fullerton fire department, is confined to his home in Santa Ana with a severe cold and is under the care of a physician. Dorsey Ellis is acting truck driver during the illness of Mr. Jackson.
Mr. and Mrs. Hugh H. Glen, who have been living at 404 West Commonwealth avenue the past month, returned to Los Angeles yesterday with their household goods. Mr. Glenn has been at the head of the Republican Supply Company's house in Placentia as purchasing agent during the time he has resided in Fullerton, but is being transferred to the Los Angeles house.
Mrs. L. C. Stevens of La Habra and Mrs. J. J. Wiley of Fullerton underwent surgical operations at the Fullerton hospital yesterday.
Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Lyon of 504 West Amerige avenue are anticipating the arrival of Mrs. Lyon's parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Derryberry of Nashville, Tenn., who will spend the winter with them.
Henry McKenna of Redmonds, Utah, is here to spend the winter with his son-in-law and daughter, 'Mr. and Mrs. P. M. Adams of 332 West Amerige avenue.

Boy Confesses To Murderous Assault
VISALIA., Dec. 16—Following a five-hour grilling by Sheriff Court Smith, Norman Kennard, 18. Visalia youth, confessed to the murderous assault on W. A. Roach, aged peanut vender last Sunday.
Attention was attracted to Kennard when a young woman with whom he was acquainted and who also knew Roach well, told of Roach having shown both herself and Kennard a large amount of money he kept on his person.
Kennard concealed himself in the house and attacked the old man with a gas pipe, but was frightened away before accomplishing the robbery. Roach, who was first thought fatally injured, will recover.

The Telephone
The Telephone Directory
Good telephone service depends vitally upon care in calling telephone numbers. A wrong number called causes loss of time to you, to the party called and to the operator. Every instance means avoidable inconvenience to all concerned.
It is not the loss of time to you alone or to the operator that concerns us most, but it is the annoyance to the party called. Your mistake cannot be explained to him, and the Telephone Company is held responsible for your error.
Consulting the current issue of the telephone directory, instead of trusting to memory; giving your number clearly, and quickly correcting the operator if she misunderstands your call, will greatly increase the efficiency of the service.
