SANTA CLAUS TO GIVE
MAXWELL CREATES GREAT SENSATION AT LOCAL AGENCY
The new Touring model of the good Maxwell which is now being shown by Turton & Lumsdon has created a real sensation.
Perhaps, no other car manufactured in America has undergone such a complete and truly wonderful transformation as the Maxwell has experienced.
The demand for the new model is simply tremendous. Advance orders are coming in fast and it is predicted that the enclosed models—the hand-some coupes and sedans—will break all sales records the coming year.

U.S. Merchant Marine Increases 15 Per Cent
WASHINGTON, Dec. 16.—The gross tonnage of the American merchant marine increased 15 per cent during the fiscal year ending June 30, 1921, the Commissioner of Navigation stated today in his annual report to the Secretary of Commerce. In June 30, 1921, the merchant marine comprised 28,012 vessels with 18,282,136 gross tons. The increase in tonnage during the year was 1,194,554 gross tons.
POMEROY SAYS TRADE IS GROWING; CUTS ALL PRICES
L. F. Pomeroy, 134 South Los Angeles street, is featuring big price cuts in all kinds of tires, auto accessories and greases during the holiday season.
"Business has been unusually brisk for the past two weeks," said Mr. Pomeroy today, "and I believe business will continue to improve from this time on. In order to help things along I decided that I would make a big cut in all kinds of tires, accessories and greases—a cut so deep that buying would become irresistible to all car owners. The public is well informed on quality as well as what the regular prices of these goods are and when a bona fide sale is advertised the response is sure and unusually big. I was particularly impressed with the great crowds that came to Anaheim in response to the "Merchants Christmas Gift Sale" and it gave me a vast amount of satisfaction to see how interested the shoppers were in comparing the "magic number" at the top of the first section of The HERALD with the number which we displayed in our show window. Hundreds of people stopped before our display window and their faces were a study as they carefully made their comparisons.
CLEVELAND WINS HARD DESERT BATTLE ON LITTLE CAR
SANTA CLAUS TO GIVE MORE AUTOMOBILES SAYS DUNTON
"More than ever this year will automobiles be given as Yuletide gifts," says George Dunton. "A good many people have been waiting for Christmas to buy a car. A good many others after a little Christmas shopping in other directions are buying one gift for the whole family.
"It's a fact that one can buy a fine motor car today for the price of a lady's good fur coat, and there are quite a few women who figure that they won't need a new coat if they have a sedan."
"We are making extra preparations for the Christmas buyers and expect to play Santa Claus in about every section of town."
Dunton, the Ford and Fordson distributor for Anaheim territory, states that he will remain open evenings until 9 o'clock until December 24 to accommodate the Christmas trade.

CLEVELAND WINS HARD DESERT BATTLE ON LITTLE GAS
When a person has a 100-mile stretch of desert before him, over which there is no road other than a wagon trail, it isn't pleasant to contemplate the fact that you have got just ten gallons of gas to take you there.
That's the situation in which Frank Brady recently found himself, en route from Los Angeles to the Brady Mine forty-five miles south of the border in Sonora, Mex.
At Ajo, Ariz., everyone advised him not to attempt this trip in an auto, but to go on horseback or by team, on account of the deep and drifting sand. Conditions on the road were simply indescribable, but Brady's Cleveland pulled through deep sands, washes, and over desert where there wasn't a vestige of trail.
Brady figured on replenishing his gasoline tank at the mine, but on reaching there found the supply exhausted and the stamp mill shut down waiting for a wagon-train of fuel, and the round trip from Ajo to the mine, a distance of 170 miles with more than forty miles of intermediate gear work, was accomplished with ten gallons of gasoline.
Brady reports the road between Yuma and El Centro to be exceedingly bad on account of drifting sand.
The Cleveland car in which he made his trip went back into demonstration service without a visit to the shops, which is a tribute to the Cleveland's standup quality. The Cleveland agency in Anaheim is operated by Ray Goodcell.

John Layton Has Edge On Billiard Champion
CHICAGO, Dec. 16 — Challenger John Layton entered the second day's competition of the three-cushion championship billiard match with a 16 point advantage over the champion, Augie Keckhiefer. He defeated the king, 60 to 4 in 67 innings last night.
