A bugpious young American farmer went to England to learn his business, but where he went he pretended that it was far easier to teach the farmers than to learn anything from them. "I've got an idea," he said one day to a grizzled old Northumbrian agriculturist, "for a new kind of fertilizer which will be ten thousand times as effective as any that has ever been tried. Condensed fertilizer—that's what it is. Enough for an acre of ground would go in one of my vest pockets." "I don't doubt it, young gentleman," said the veteran of the soil. Now it appears that every one will be there except the host. Included in the invitation were the faculty of the high school and Mayor Thomas R. Ovlipton. Curran has for some time been serving on the Federal grand jury and there is a case now under investigation that may keep him so late he will be unable to preside at his own banquet. The mayor, however, has been called upon in his emergency. Bunko Suspect Taken With Fake Cash Rolls LOS ANGELES, Dec. 3—Attracted to a corner room of the Santa Fe depot by a large gathering of ranchers who had just stepped from a train, Patrolman O. D. Lewis, after listening to the conversation, arrested a man on suspicion of being a bunko artist. The prisoner gave the name of Henry Wilson, 34, and declared that he intended no wrong. In one of his pockets, however, the officers found a large roll of what appeared to be bills. The top bill was of $56 denomination. The roll was supposed to have contained $5,000—but it was only newspapers. Another roll supposed to have been $2,000 had only a $5 bill on top. H. P.
