"A LIFT ON THE ROAD
I remember one time when a bit of a boy, I had tramped through the woods all the day.
With a chum of my youth; we were fishing perhaps, or gathering nuts—I can't say;
We dreamed as boys do of the future, and sang, and we whistled up many a tune.
And the day with its gladness slipped by ere we knew, from the morning to late afternoon;
We were barefoot and tired, with the dusk coming fast, and the dusty highroad was so long.
As we tramped the way home and the ache in our legs stilled the earlier whistle and song;
Then a big old farm-wagon came lumbering by, on its way into town with a load.
And a kind-hearted man called us two to climb up, and he gave us a lift on the road.
I can see that old wagon that rumbled along, and the harness, each buckle and strap.
And the big, plodding horses, and hear the man's voice from the seat calling cluck and giddap;
I remember as clearly the ache in my leg, and my feet that were dusty and sore.
And the boyish delight when we crawled on the load, and the horses went plodding once more.
The years, they are forty between then and now, but I've never forgotten the way
The driver pulled up and called down to two boys who were plodding on homeward that day;
He waited till we were both up and secure in our seats on the top of the load,
And then said giddap and the horses moved on as he gave us a lift on the road."
"I consider the develop Colorado River the most mesic matter before thaand I am, therefore,s plans to attend these hope you will not only peeceedings closely and publicity they deserve,b also use your influence."

Those plodding old horses, long since have they drawn their last load, and the bones of them dust;
And the rumbling farm-wagon, its box and its wheels and the tongue of if ashes and rust.
And the chum of those old days is grown up and gone, nor whither I know or can find.
And gone too perhaps, on a last journey long, the driver whose greeting was kind
As he called to two boys on the dusty highroad; but memory cherishes yet
The day and the deed and the ride and the road, nor ever the boy shall forget;
And I wish he might know that the heart of a boy still remembers the call from the load.
After forty long years, and the ache in his legs, and the lift on the dusty highroad.

to be held at Riverside and San Diego. The development of the Colorado River will compare favorably with the Panama Canal in importance and in the amount of benefits, according to Representative Swing. Delegates from the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce will represent this city at the conference which will be attended by representatives from nearly every city and state in the west.
The letter from Congressman Swing is as follows:
"May I take a minute of your time to emphasize the importance of the coming irrigation and power conferences to be held at Riverside the 8th, 9th and 10th and at San Diego December 12? These meetings have the opportunity to do much good towards starting work on the development of the lower Colorado River from which development will flow a wonderful prosperity for all the southwest. I have been working on this proposal for a number of years and am greatly interested in seeing the undertaking successfully begun. I am convinced that when this project is completed it will compare favorably with the Panama Canal in importance and in the amount of benefits resulting therefrom to the American people.
"The present is a critical time for this great undertaking. Harmony is absolutely necessary. The united effort of the southwest is needed, if we are to succeed. It is a big enterprise and should be looked at in a big, broad way. Factional strife must be eliminated. Local jealousies and personal feeling should be submerged for the good of all. There will be benefits enough for all, once the work is done.
"I consider the development of the Colorado River the most important domestic matter before the people today, and I am, therefore, arranging my plans to attend these meetings. I hope you will not only follow the proceedings closely and give them the publicity they deserve, but that you will also use your influence to see that"

The unusually dry season has retarded agriculture. The rainfall has thus far registered only a few thousandths of an inch, when a normal fall would be a full inch. Plowing is delayed. Grain sown has not yet sprouted and much nitrifying and fertilizing material will be rendered useless owing to lack of water, according to W. E. Bonnett of the United States weather bureau.

Big Audience at the High Hears Helen Clark and in EDISON T
In a test of direct comparison, made yesterday at The High School Auditorium, before a large audience, the New Edison scored a complete and convincing triumph.
Helen Clark, the famous contralto, sang in direct comparison with the RE-CREATION of her voice by the New Edison. To every ear, there was no difference between her living voice and her RE-CREATED voice.
This is the most drastic phonograph test known. No other phonograph has ever sustained it. No other phonograph has even attempted it.
The New Edison's marvelous performance of yesterday vindicates everything that has been said or claimed for its perfect realism.
Helen Clark stood on the stage next to a shapely Chippendale cabinet. She began to sing. Her golden notes soared over the auditorium, bringing all under its magic spell.
Halfway through her song she suddenly

The instrument used in yesterday's tests was NOT a special model. It was an Official Laboratory Model, taken from regular stock. Every Official Laboratory Model in our stock is guaranteed to sustain the same test of direct comparison with living artists.

stopped singing. The New Edison, at her side, took up her song—and continued it alone.
Singer and phonograph thus alternated, throughout the song.
The only way the audience could be sure which was singing, was by watching Miss Clark's lips,—so exactly like the living voice was the RE-CREATED voice.
Joseph Phillips made the same test of comparison with the RE-CREATIONS of his baritone selections. Again the same result—there was no difference between the RE-CREATED voice and the living voice.
Proof was piled upon proof! Evidence was massed on evidence! The end of the concert found the audience absolutely and completely convinced, through its own personal experience, that there is no difference between an artist's living performance and its RE-CREATION by the New Edison,—that listening to the New Edison is, in literal truth, the same as listening to the living artists.
