Monday, November 28, 1921. Takes Man of Conviction to Speak for God---W "The Chosen Spokesman of God" was the sermon topic at the Presbyterian church yesterday morning. The pastor, Rev. Thomas H. Walker, took for his text, "Isaiah 6:1. 'In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and His train filled the temple.'" "It takes a man of conviction to speak for God," said Rev. Walker. "Isaiah's two deep-rooted convictions; the righteousness and grace of God, His doctrine of Divine Providence was founded on the character of God. God was regnant because He was righteous and holy—His righteousness everywhere tempered with mercy. All great convictions are a growth. Truth is dwelt upon until it has explosive force. Isaiah, a young man of twenty-five, intensely patriotic and a great admirer of the King, feels the ground slipping from under his feet when the King dies. He turns to God and God shows the young enthusiast that He is the reigning one upon whom the safety of the nation depends." Political and social changes often awaken men to a consciousness of the weakness of all human dependencies and the fundamental strength of the authority and superintendence of God. The shaken institutions of men drive men to the unshakable God. The habit of a lifetime asserts itself and Isaiah goes at once to God. In the place of worship is sensitive to the presence of God, and there, too, he is disillusioned. Some claim it is God and Christianity who have deceived them when things go wrong; others know that it is our boasted institutions which lack perfection. Isaiah saw God. There is much to see you cannot see with the eye alone. Faith fixed its gaze on God alone and saw in the white light of His holiness not only human weakness but the nation's superficial religious life as well. Isaiah's life thence became God-centered and he saw above nations, peoples, political moves God, knew the cleansing fires necessary and though he process he yet offered showed at the same time for his people in the cry his freshly consecrated long, Lord? Isaiah saw God. There is much to see you cannot see with the eye alone. Faith fixed its gaze on God alone and saw in the white light of His holiness not only human weakness but the nation's superficial religious life as well. Isaiah's life thence became God-centered and he saw above nations, peoples, political moves God, high exalted, glorious, all powerful. This is the essence of religious faith. Carlyle has said: 'A man must get a foothold beyond time in order to get a foothold within time.' All this the young man saw and what did he hear? Heavenly singers singing of the holiness of God. The holiness of God is no mere figure of speech. It is not inactive, quiescent holiness but intensely dynamic, potent and very close to his life. It is a devouring flame, consuming all that was antagonistic to itself so that the smoke hung about the central fire. Isaiah is evercome by the awesome sight and he cried out in his agony, 'Woe is me, for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips, for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of Hosts.' Disillusion is followed by self-knowledge and he knows himself and his times for what they really are. He there, too, he is disillusioned. Little knowledge of the God means a defect. 'How long, Lord?' It was a most discouraging mission because the people would not hear nor believe, until their cities were wasted and many had lost their lives. It is no new discovery that people will not believe a thing simply because it is true. Truth in many quarters has no market value. Wisdom cries unheeded on the corners of the street. "Many would rather believe a beautiful life than accept austere truth; would rather live in the glamour of the false than pay the price for the glory of the true. "Stearn measures are needed. Men must be forced to live in a harder, more uncomfortable world; must be driven out of their nests on to the battlefield. "The chief defects in the religious life of today are: Ignorance of God, for acquaintance with the fact of His holiness is almost a lost sense; putting the conscience to sleep; with manufactured revivals and rituals, is another serious defect of today. We welcome anything that will take the place of deep thinking—momentary thrills rather than deep reflection. "Then, too, we are prone to make light-of-the-saving mercy of Christ. It is useless to deliver the message of God's Mercy and Forgiveness to people who do not believe they need it. Little knowledge of the holiness of God means a defect. We estimate of the atoning work of Christ. Our wants, loudly expressed, are an easy going church program, a comfortable world in which to live and a not-too-hard reception at the hands of God when we do actually have to face Him. Sleek bodies and lean souls here spells soul poverty in the midst of plenty with the shame of it covering our faces with confusion in His presence.
