Postcards Delivered After Fourteen Years
PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 22.—Speaking of the rapidity of the mails, Detective Joseph Douglas of Philadelphia knows something about it.
In August, 1907, fourteen years ago, he passed his vacation in Atlantic City and Ocean City. And inasmuch as he had left Mrs. Douglas at home he thought it best to send her postal cards telling her of his safe arrival and subsequent good behavior. He sent cards from both places.
When he returned home his wife wanted to know why he had not written. Douglas assured her that he had, but—well, the matter was forgotten until the other day.
In the morning mail, fresh and as convincing as though they had been mailed the day before were the cards. Where they had been these last fourteen years is a secret which probably will lie buried in the mysteries of the postal department.
Ten thousand orphans in Armenia will be fed this winter on Southern California beans, dried fruit and other products, as as result of Near East relief work.

Between Ourselves
By Della M. Stewart
The wiser men become the more tolerant they are. None but the unthinking or the maliciously inclined allow tolerance to rule speech or action. Some of us would be horrified did we realise how plainly we show the calibre of our intellect by our impatient intolerance of the ideas and beliefs of those we meet.
No two human beings stand on exactly the same intellectual rung. No two have exactly the same range of mental vision. The outlook is very broad. How can we be sure that of all others we are the favored individuals to whom all of truth is made known? How can we be sure that all the wisdom in the world is corralled by us?
Seems a bit foolish, now we think of it, doesn't it? Presupposes an enormous amount of self-assurance and self-conceit. How can we tell just how any other mortal sees the things of the mind, any more than they can tell how we do. Why try to order their thoughts and deeds to suit ourselves?
More subtle than the thoughts of the mind, even, are the soul impulses and feelings. Why deny the right of different religious beliefs, if they are conscientiously held? Life is more subjective than sometimes we realize. Our attitude toward things goes far to determine their value to us. That which seems foolish to some may be a tower of strength to another.
We need tolerance in the world today. Each of us can add our mite right here.

At least the Mexican government is recognized by the sentiment of the average American citizen.
Congressman Herrick of Oklahoma has been sued for breach of promise, and regardless of the actual merits of the case, it would serve him rightly to get stung.
All that China seems to be asking is freedom, from raids by her neighbors.
Leavenworth prison, the next home of Gardner, is said to have been designed with small regard for the feelings of prisoners desirous of change of air and scenery.
China is not on the "dissecting table" by any act of the conference. It has held that position a long time and the effort is to send it to the convalescent ward, with a view to complete cure.
NEW FRENCH COINS CAUSE OF PROTEST
Protests by French economists that the new metal coinage about to ze put into circulation will result in an immense depreciation of French monetary values and thus cause a fall in the values of the franc are being studied by a commission of experts attached to the French treasury.
The new coins take the place of the two and one half franc and the fifty-centime silver coins which were in circulation until the armistice and which have now been melted down and converted into specie.
The new one-franc piece will be worth, intrinsically, only .01684 of a franc and the two-franc piece only .0337. The fifty-centime piece will contain actual value to th eextent of .00842 of a franc.
The coins are of a bronze-aluminum alloy. They will be legal tender throughout France.

Girl Driver Drowns As Car Runs Off Ferryboat
NEW YORK, Nov. 21.—A young woman, believed by the police to be Miss Edith B. Stewart, school teacher in the Wilkesbarre, Pa., high school, lost control of her automobile and plunged through the railing of the ferryboat Weehawken to death in the Hudson river last night. The woman was still in the car when it was raised from the river bed a short time later.
Still, we wouldn't have believed it if the author had said D'Artagnan jumped around the way Doug does.
