MYTH OF ANCIENTS IS FOUND TO HAVE BASIS OF REALITY
For many centuries Norway has had its legends that recited frightful tales of the kraken, a great and mysterious marine creature, that was a danger to sailors on the high seas. Now scientists have found that the localities in which these folk tales flourish are the habitat of giant squids or "cattle fish," of the genus Architeuthus, that have frequently been cast up on sea beaches.
According to Dr. James Ritchie of the Royal Scottish museum, the largest of these on record had tentacles that have a span close to thirty feet. It was nine feet nine inches long from the tip of its tail to the tip of its short arms, but its tentacular arms were each fourteen feet long. The tentacles were armed with some 1,200 toothed suckers, which must have rendered the creature a formidable enemy.

World’s Richest Indian Will Move From Shack Into Palatial Mansion
MUSKOGEE, Okla., Nov. 15.—Jackson Barnett, Oklahoma's richest Indian, has gone to Kansas City to have a fling at metropolitan luxury, and if he finds that he can stand it, Barnett will make it permanent—with the consent of the United States government of which he is a ward. Barnett up until recently lived in a two-room block house at Henryetta, 30 miles from Muskogee, wore cheap clothes, smoked cheap tobacco and didn't even own a phonograph—which is an odd way to live for one rated as worth $5,000,000, even if he is an Indian. While at Henryetta, Barnett was well satisfied in his two rooms and let his guardian, attorney and agents of the Indian agency in Muskogee and Washington worry about the millions that were fowing from oil wells on his property. His wants were few and the money went into the banks of Oklahoma on deposits made by the Indian agency to his credit.
Bought Liberty Bonds
When the war was on, thousands of dollars of his money went into Liberty bonds and war savings stamps. Contributions were made to institutions of earning and Jackson lived the simple life, never going farther than a few miles distant form his cabin for many years.
Then he met Mrs. Anna Laura Lowe and they were married. “Kidnaping” is what Barnett's agents called it. However, Barnett was held under straint until Victor M. Locke Jr. became superintendent of the Indian agency in Muskogee.
“A wealthy Indian has as much right to spend his money as a wealthy white man.” Locke has said.
And Jackson in company with his wife and her daughter sought to make a dent in the $5,000,000 pile. Mrs. Barnett said her husband needed a change and the government consented to a vacation. They went to Canada, and returning, found money had so flowed in that the dent had filled up. After that vacation the Indian was unhappy for the first time in his life and refused to go back to the cabin and cheap clothes.
Can Live Anywhere.
“We are going to let the Indian himself decide where he wants to live,” Superintendent Locke declared. “If he wants to live in Muskogee, all right. If he chooses some other city we have nothing to say in the way of objecting, for he's the right to make his own decisions.”
If a suitable residence can be found in Kansas City it will be purchased by the government for its wealthy ward. Otherwise, a house will be built.
“There's no truth in the report that we are going to spend ¥200,000 for a residence for Jackson Barnett,” Locke sand, “but we are going to see it that he has a house in keeping with his wealth and one with which he is satisfied.”
IF YOU TELL LIES
DODGE THIS TEST
IF YOU TELL LIES
DODGE THIS TEST
People may tell a lie and show no outward signs of it; but internally through the heart and lungs—they betray themselves.
There now is a machine, invented by William M. Marston of Boston, that finds its principal use in recording the heart and lung action of suspected criminals as they are cross-examined. There are three separate parts to the machine—the chronoscope, the kimeograph and the sphygmomanometer.
The chronoscope measures the time that elapses between the examiner's question and the suspect's answer. There is a mouthpiece in front of each man. When the examiner asks his question, the chronoscope automatically starts to whir and continues until the suspect answers. The interval between question and answer is measured in twelve hundredths of a second. Usually the examiner reads off a prepared list of words one by one. The suspect is told to reply with the first word that comes into his head. Some of the words in the examiner's list have nothing to do with the case. Others refer directly to the crime in question. If the suspect is guilty, he will invariably hesitate, perhaps for only a few hundredths of a second—before replying to a "crime" word, because the first word that comes on his mind is usually one that bears on the crime and he must hunt for another one. The innocent man will respond to all words in approximately the same interval of time.
Next there is the kimeograph, which records the suspect's breathing. A rubber tube is fastened around the man's chest and is compressed slightly at each breath. The tube is connected with a revolving drum in such a way that a zigzag line is drawn on the drum at each breath. When a man lies, he breathes differently. You might not notice it, but the kimeograph does; the zigzag lines take a new course when he lies.
The sphygmomanometer registers blood pressure. It is attached to the man's arm and is connected with a stethoscope that is operated by a doctor. He and the examiner have a system of signals that tell him when to record the pressure. First he finds the average pressure of the man when he is being asked inconsequential questions. If his blood pressure increases whenever he is asked questions that refer to the crime, indications point to his guilt.

SEEKS FREEDOM
Mrs. May L. Dilly of Chicago endured five years of silence with her husband, William Dilly, head of a supply company bearing his name. That, she figured, was long enough to remain silent, so she has sued Dilly for divorce.
It is charged in the bill that his wife was forced to live in quarters that would have been spurned by a dog. In fact, it said, Dilly's pet dogs had luxurious quarters, while his wife lived five years in a bedroom with a leaky roof and no carpet on the floor. Five years ago he locked her in the bedroom and told her he never would speak to her again. He relented to the extent of taking her to his summer home on Fox lake, but forced her to sleep in a shack at the rear of his cottage, with two Negro servants. She also charges he was lavishing his money and attentions on a girl.
Business Depression

The fact that there is a business depression has not yet penetrated to the hen yards of America. As far as the hens are aware, there has never been any interruption to normalcy, say the poultry experts, and if you give Milady Hen a decent place to scratch, a little something to scratch for and a drink once in a while, she will come income that will buy sealskin coats and limousines. It doesn't come that easy. Anyone who has had any experience with chickens of any variety knows that they are a temperamental lot and have to ze coddled. If you don't treat them right you can't expect much.

The fact that there is a business depression has not yet penetrated to the hen yards of America. As far as the hens are aware, there has never been any interruption to normalcy, say the poultry experts, and if you give Mi-lady Hen a decent place to scratch, a little something to scratch for and a drink once in a while, she will come through with her egg just as regularly as she ever did.
At the recent unemployment conference at Washington a farmer from North Dakota, who is also a recognized authority on agricultural economics, testified that a family of five can live on the labor of fifty-four hens—that the eggs and spring fries from that sized flock will pay the bills of the family and permit it to live decently.
Of course it is not presumed that any family can buy fifty-four hens, turn them loose in the chicken yard, and immediately begin collecting an income that will buy sealskin coats and limousines. It doesn't come that easy. Anyone who has had any experience with chickens of any variety, knows that they are a temperamental lot and have to ze coddled. If you don't treat them right you can't expect much.
Just by way of example, they like to have their roosts facing south. Why that is nobody knows, but it is a fancy. No self-respecting hen will cluck as cheerily, or lay her egg as regularly, if her roost faces north, east or west. She would be just as insulted as your wife if you would try to put the kitchen range in the parlor.
But poultry raising is not hard to learn, they say, and anyone who is willing to devote a little time and care to the subject can capitalize his backyard, and assure himself fresh eggs with his bacon—maybe also the bacon.
