He said in part: "Armistice Day the nation laid to rest in his marble crypt the representative soldier of the thousands who made the supreme sacrifice. Across the marble arch of the national memorial to our soldier and sailor dead is inscribed this immortal saying of Lincoln spoken at Gettysburg, 'We here highly resolve that these dead shall ont have died in vain.' This is more true today than when uttered by Lincoln, 'The Faith of the Nation.'" "In President Wilson's final message to confess occurs this stirring sentences, also from Lincoln, 'Let us have faith that right makes might, and in that faith let us dare to do our duty as we understand it.' This, too, is embodied in 'The Faith of the Nation.' This, the faith in which was conceived and out of which has come the great hope of the world that a Are You Properly Paid For Doing The Family Washing? "The divine intent for human society is plain. Right shall triumph and peace shall prevail. But peace must come to the world as it comes to the individual, through allegiance to God's Son, whom 'He hath made heir of all things.' For the world's greatest problem is not dread disease or stalking famine or industrial poverty, nor is it the remaking of the map of the world, but the world's real problem lies in the hearts of men, and only Christ, the Lamb of God, can take away the sin of the world. Selfishness and hate unconfessed and unforgiven anywhere in the world is this world's constant menace. The remedy is not an armed truce or a solemnly signed treaty nor an enactment by an international tribunal; for, the nation's heart is not a bit of parchment nor is the nation's conscience a monogram. Heart religion is the needed remedy. What avails it to have the wisdom of Solomon if we have not the unselfishness of Jesus? What avails it have the theological ability of a Paul if we lack the constraining love of Jesus." Mr. and Mrs. West and family motored to San Pedro yesterday and visited the New York batleship. The bulk of the clothing, according to the first report received at Red Cross national headquarters, is for children, whose situation is particularly pitiful. Shipments of children's clothing total nearly twenty tons and in addition Red Cross chapter workers have already made and shipped more than two tons of layettes. The response to the appeal has come from communities large and small throughout the country. Poughkeepsie, N.Y., sent 2600 pounds of clothing and shoes. Los Angeles made an initial contribution of 3400 pounds; Newton, Mass., Utica, N.Y., Chicago, Philadelphia, and Boston, each made substantial contributions.
