Morris stated that a story published relative to arsenate of lead poisoning used in the war on the coiling moth, has been misconstrued by a large number of apple and pear growers as well as the general public. A statement made in a recent story credited Morris with stating that "the soluble arsenic is dissolved and absorbed by the fruit." While this is technically correct, Morris desires the public to know that there is absolutely no danger of arsenic poisoning from the fruit. "The application of arsenate of lead to apples and pears has been highly successful," said Morris, "and no question has ever been raised as to the use of this means of combatting the pest." Morris stated last week that there are two kinds of arsenate of lead used in exterminating the moths. One of these is an acid lead, the other a basic lead. Both are absolutely harmless in their application to the fruit trees. Several growers, Morris said, had assumed the impression that the published statement relative to "arsenic" would have a tendency to curtail values of the fruit. “There is absolutely no foundation for a belief that the arsenate method of treating fruit will injure anyone,” Morris declared. Ward, Ph. G. Pharmacy EXPLORER IS GOING BACK TO ARCTIC FASCINATED SEATTLE, June 30.—Captain Josph Bernard, scientist-explorer, was for four years ice-bound in the frigid wastes of the arctic. Bent on out-Vilhjalmuring Stefansson, he is going back for more. He is now on the way to Nome, Alaska, to equip another expedition to study the anthropology of the frozen regions. Commanding the schooner Teddy Bear, Capt. Bernard, set out from Nome in 1916, proceeding to Coronation Gulf, 1400 miles to the north. Here the heavy ice hemmed in the vessel, which was turned eastward along the arctic islands. On August 18, 1917, off Taylor island, the Teddy Bear was frozen fast in the ice, and there it remained, according to Capt Bernard, until September, 1919. So Capt. Bernard had plenty of time to make observations. Here are some that he made: That the arctic peoples are being exterminated by disease and contact with civilization. That food and clothing producing caribou are becoming extinct, and that within ten years the Canadian government will be forced to provide for their sustenance. That wars between various tribes and custom of retaining women captives gave all the arctic region a common language base and similar customs. BALBOA BUG JUICE. WALTER STREET Los Angeles Street NEW CITY HALL ONE OF ANAHEIM'S BIG NECESSITIES TODAY Old-timers tell of Anaheim's first venture in the bond-selling game. It was on a bright, sunny day, early in June, 1891, that the Mother colony first pledged her municipal integrity, and the trick was turned to the tune of 104 votes for, to 31 against, for bonds to the amount of $15,000. This sum was required to buy property for the fire department, to grade and complete the improvement of streets, and for the extension and completion of a water department, adequate to the needs of the handful of citizens then requiring such public services. This "first-aid," it is recounted, sufficed for these civic requirements, and the property then purchased now represents a goodly item in the present wealth of the municipality, conservatively estimated at over $300,000. Most Southern California cities of progressive spirit today have passed Anaheim in civic preparedness. This is by no means due to inferior citizenship, but to the enormous growth within the past several years of Anaheim, and the depressing fact that her city limits include such a small tract for the production of tax revenue. The bounds of Anaheim remain at the limits fixed by the earliest settlers. Other cities, feeling growing pains, have expanded their limits early and are now able to enlarge their public service arrangements, without recourse to bonding their assets. Due to lack of wider limits, and consequently curtailed tax revenue, UNCLE SAM GOING TO GET BIG SLICE OF CHAMPIONSHIP NEW YORK, June 30.—Uncle Sam wasn't mentioned in the agreement, and he is not going to put on the gloves. The closest he will get to the ring will be the box office. Uncle Sam, however, is going to get the biggest cut of the Dempsey-Carpentier money. He will get more than Tex Rickard will make out of the show and he will get more than Dempsey and Carpentier, without turning a hand. Revenue officials, hasing their figures on receipts of a million dollars which seem sure, have it in black and white that Uncle Sam will make close to $500,000 in that one Saturday afternoon. The first cut is ten per cent of the gross receipts. On a million dollar gate that means $100,000. Jack Dempsey will get $340,000 for his share. His tax will amount to approximately $165,000. Georges Carpentier, having a wife and child, will not have to pay the government as much income tax as the champion. From his purse of $240,000 he will have to substract $94,000. From Tex Rickard, whose net profits may be around 150,000, Uncle Sam also will get a generous cut. Altogether, especially if the receipts go beyond the million dollars, which is not improbable, the government will get very close to a half million. Then also the state of New Jersey which levies a ten per cent tax on boxing will come in for a cool little $100,000. Figure it up and see how much profit, Rickard stands to make. An enthusiast suggests that Russia's leaders should be knighted. They are already benighted. Lower on Nash Effective Nash prices will be reduced, effective July 2. This conforms to our statement made last October that Nash prices would be maintained until at least July 1, 1921. The reasons were plain. Until manufacturing costs were lower we could not cut price without cutting value, as Nash prices were not inflated. We pointed out then that while the average rise in the price of motor cars for a four-year period had been 76% the price of Nash cars had been raised but 31%. This 31% included the addition of cord tires as standard equipment and many other additions and refinements which added materially to the value of Nash cars.
