CONFERENCE WILL BE HELD OF WORKERS The eighteenth monthly conference of County Sunday School workers will be held at the Santa Ana Congregational Church, Tuesday, June 28, beginning at 4 p.m. Rev. J. G. Kennedy will resume his series of "Studies in Matthew." The separate divisional conferences will begin at 5 o'clock, and the luncheon at 6. This is strictly a basket lunch, and as there will be no one to prepare tables, it will be necessary for each to bring everything needed for luncheon. The open conference is at 7 p.m., and will conclude the session, as there will be no later evening address. These conferences are held under the auspices of the Orange County Sunday school association; and a cordial invitation is extended to all who are interested in Bible school work. The great need of the country just at present is something to make hoses as attractive as hose. No S-O-S with P-O-L THERE was once a Trawler that Coaled for a Normal Trip. But there came the Northwest Gale. And the ship exhausted her Bunker Coal in the Fight to Reach Port. And the Crew did burn Everything but the Hull to Keep up Steam! There are motorists whose battery has apparently enough power for the trip. But they pull that power down with too many stops and starts to the mile. And when they need just one more start to reach "port", the battery gives up the ghost. The Prest-O-Lite Battery uses less than one four-hundredth of its power-reserve for a single start—and the generator quickly replaces that. Robt. V. TAKEN TO WHITTIER TO FACE CHARGES Constable R. B. Way of Whittier township, and Whittier City Marshal Roy Ballou, went to Santa Ana today, to take M. Cardosa, accused of kidnapping a 14 year old Whittier girl to the justice court there for arraignment. Cardosa was arrester yesterday when he attempted to get a marriage license. Cardosa is also wanted in Fullerton and Whittier on suspicion of passing fictitious checks. Four checks on the American Fruit Growers Exchange for $27 each, that Cardosa, or Manuel Montes is suspected of having cashed in Fullerton are held here. An Oakland Six stock touring car three weeks ago smashed all Pacific coast records and established what is believed to be a national record in one of the most sensational 48-hour non-stop road runs ever made by an automobile in a dual test of stamina and economy. Not once was the engine of the car stopped during the 48-hour grind, at the end of which it had piled up a total of 1709 miles with an average speed for the entire distance of 35 miles an hour and a gasoline average of 20.1 miles per gallon. The test was made on a course of approximately 14 miles on what is known as the Sunnyside-Los Altos highway, near Sunnyvale, Santa Clara county. This course was chosen because roadway, turns and general traffic conditions are similar to those on thousands of miles on California highways that are met with in average touring, the test being designed to be as practicable as possible. Jeffrey and Frank R. Schafer, Los Angeles architects wherein J. R. Abernathy, former superintendent of Anaheim grammar schools seeks to collect $2500 as a fee for recommending the architects to the city school officials. Judge Hemmi has issued the following statement with regard to Abernathy's case: Township, and Whittier City Marshal Roy Ballou, went to Santa Ana today, to take M. Four checks on the American Fruit Growers Exchange for $27 each, that Cardosa, or Manuel Montes is suspected of having cashed in Fullerton are held here as evidence. Two bad checks from Whittier are also in the hands of the officers, who declare that the handwriting is similar to that of Cardosa. Merchants of Fullerton declare that they can identify the man now in jail as the same one who passed the checks. According to the officers, Cardosa went to Fullerton last Saturday night and cashed three checks for $27 each. He then, they say went back to Whittier, kidnapped Manuela Martiniz, 14 year old girl, and took her to Delhi where they stayed with friends until yesterday, when he was arrested in Santa Ana. The girl was held at the Detention Home until this noon, when she was taken home to her parents by Whittier officers. Church News ZION LUTHERAN CHURCH H. G. Jeffrey and Frank R. Schaefer, Los Angeles architects wherein J. R. Abernathy, former superintendent of Anaheim grammar schools seeks to collect $2500 as a fee for recommending the architects to the city school officials. Judge Hemmi has issued the following statement with regard to Abernathy's case: "Mr. Abernathy alleges in substance that, on or about June 20, 1920, the said defendants, as architects, employed him to call on the board of trustees of the Anaheim high school district and to speak in favor of them as architects of superior ability and of their preliminary drawings and plans and specifications, and agreed to pay plaintiff the sum of $1250 if he did so, and defendants secured the job as architects. That plantiff did so, and that defendants got the job. That thereafter plaintiff demanded payment of said fee and defendants refused. "Plaintiff, for a second cause of action, alleges in like manner that defendants employed him to go before the trustees of the Montebello school district, and agreed to pay him the sum of $1250 if they (the defendants) should be given the job as architects. That plaintiff did so, and that defendants secured the job. That thereafter he demanded payment of defendants, and defendants refused to pay same." According to Mr. Hemmi, attorneys for the defendant, architects have filed a demurrer in which they declare payment of such a commission or even promise of payment would be against public policy, comparing such action with lobbying. The date for the hearing will be announced later. The League's position asserted that conditions of handling and transporting citrus fruits had changed materially since the general rate increases were ordered by the commission last August and that the increases had added a burden amounting to 7 percent of the value of the citrus raisers' investments above the former transportation costs.
