Just call up Berger, Phone 1. Orange county has anywhere from 500 to 6,000 aliens according to estimates made by county officials who are interested now in having aliens in the county registered in accordance with the law passed by last legislature. The law compels all male aliens or over and under 60 years of age register and pay $10 poll tax. The will apply to Mexicans, Japanese aliens who live in California, in justice to other taxpayers, will be compelled to pay a tax on privilege of making a living in California. Registration this year must be completed by August 1st. "The responsibility of seeing that he is registered rests upon alien," said County Clerk Backs. It is much the same as it was in the registration for the draft. The deputy expected to make a canvass and get in all of the names possible. He ever should he miss anybody, alien is responsible for the failure register. Under the law failure register is a misdemeanor." On August 1 collection of poll taxes work help children night. ST AND FOUND may be commenced by the assessor's office and this year they must be completed in December. The assessor is to be allowed one field deputy for each 1000 registrations or fraction thereof. Using the registration certificates turned over to him by the county clerk, the assessor's deputies are to go out after the money. In case an alien refuses to pay or hasn't the cash, the deputy must seize the alien's personal property and sell it if necessary. The entire system of registration and collection has been carefully worked out and is enacted into law. Copies of the law have been received by all local county officials who have anything to do with the administration of the act. The blanks received by Backs resemble the voter's registration blanks in size and arrangement. Each alien registered is to be given a receipt. Any alien who is unable to write his name at the bottom of the certificate must place his thumb print as well as his cross mark upon the line elected for his signature. By far the larger number of registrations in this county will be among Mexicans. The county officers recognize that the Mexicans will be the most troublesome of alien residents of this county to deal with for the reason that many of the Mexicans cannot read nor write and will not understand the reason for registration and taxation. The second largest nationality to be registered in this county will be the Japanese. There are also quite a number of Greeks in the county. The number of Greeks has increased considerably in the last three or four years. They are to be found almost entirely in the bootblack stands. Very few of them are farmers. There are also quite a number of Greeks in the county. The number of Greeks has increased considerably in the last three or four years. They are to be found almost entirely in the bootblack stands. Very few of them are farmers. "I have no figures to go by in making an estimate as to the number of allens there are in the county," said Backs. "Even were the draft figures available, they would not be reliable for conditions have changed a good deal, and among the Mexicans are a great many who are migratory in their habits. "We are to register males only, and only those who are over 21 and under 60, excepting paupers, idiots and insane persons. The man who has taken out his first papers, but who has not yet taken his final papers must register." The money that is collected is to be turned in to the unapportioned county school fund, from which it will be distributed through the regular channels to the various schools of the county. Press dispatches state that a fight will be made in the courts by the Japanese in an effort to secure a decision finding the act unconstitutional. "As I understand it," said Backs, "this fight will not be made at the time of registration but at the time of payment." Views of the News By ROBERT QUILLEN Frequently the V-neck looks like L.
