THE ROYAL VISITOR ARRIVES
By JOHN BARTON
(Copyright, 1921, by The Associated Newspapers)
So that's how he came to be a King," said Thunderpaws the Skunk. He'd just finished telling Malty Kitten why there was only one creature in all the world who could fight the Evil Ones—the snakes with the terrible bite who were in Malty's cabin. That creature was the King of the Scales. And he was coming across the grassy field to help them.
"What about the mouse's tail you sent him?" asked Malty.
"Oh, my great-grandfather caught him a mouse. It was just to show that he wanted to pay for the King's egg he spoiled—before he knew it belonged to the King. That was before he was a King, really. Mother Nature would never have made him her Vice-regent of the Land Below the Then Malty's blood ran cold. A tremendous snake raised his head from the grass—high, higher, higher still, twice as tall as the skunk. His slender throat had a proud curve. His bright eyes had a bold, fierce look, not at all like the slinky, guilty, sidewise glance of all the other snakes he had ever seen. He was more like a hawk. Yet his voice was gentle, not a bit like a hawk's harsh scream. "What is the sign of, my friend?" he lisped.
"Fur for the egg that lies between us," answered Thunderpaws, setting the mouse before him. He touched it with his tongue as a sign he accepted it, but he didn't eat it. Kings never do.
News Notes of the Oil Fields
The Amalgamated Oil Company is making preparations to bring in Huntington-1-A, drilled to 2800 feet. From all indications it should make a nice well, being just across the road from one of the Standard's best producers. Fowler No. 1 is now drilling ahead at 3100, Fowler No. 2 is rigging up, as is also Pearce No. 1. Huntington 2-A, the Amalgamated's first producer, is cleaning out and will be drilled from 2565 deeper.
Just as the Argonaut Oil Company had its Turley No. 1 bailed down and starting to flow the water broke in on the well and shut the oil out. Efforts are now being made to locate the water. The well is 3044.

Presently Thunderpaws sat up With His Forefeet Drooping.
Grass-roots if my great grand-father hadn't taken him to see her. The King accepted the mouse to show that there was no quarrel between them, and he said we Striped Ones were to send him a tail whenever we needed help from him or his children after fun. A tall is as good a mouse and a whole lot safer because no messenger would ever think of eating it. But now I must get ready to meet the present King."
With the greatest care Thunderpaws clicked down his fur and trimmed his tail and his whiskers. Then, with slow step, he marched out to where Killdeer, the little brown bird who had carried his queer message, and some of his fluttering family were escorting his majesty. Malty didn't know just how to act, so he stayed a little way behind. All he could see was the grasses moving.
Presently Thunderpaws sat up with his forefeet drooping. This is the respectful position for Woodsfolk because it shows they don't mean to pounce on any one. He didn't speak, for, of course, he carried the tailless mouse in his teeth to show he didn't mean to do any biting. You must be very careful how you meet a king!
Just as the Argonaut Oil Company had its Turley No. 1 balled down and starting to flow the water broke in on the well and shut the oil out. Efforts are now being made to locate the water. The well is 3044.
Unless the state should fall to pass on the water conditions at Bolsa Chica No. 1, the well will go on production today. Drilled to 2184 the well has been showing very strong and gives evidence of being one of the field's best. Every precaution has been taken and the hole is considered to be in the best condition of any drilled at Huntington. Work on No. 2 is starting.
Drill pipe has been secured for the Blue Shale Oil and Mining Company and the actual drilling out of the cement will start before the end of the week. On account of the rotary equipment being taken out, it was rumored that there was some mystery about the action. It now develops that the rotary was exchanged for a heavier type.
Before the end of the week Edens Syndicate No. 1 will be on production. The cement has been drilled out at 2230, the state has put its O. K. on the shut off, and now the well drilled in the sand at 2250 is being brought in. It will prove up a large area in the central west side of the field.
A feature of the drilling at Fidelity No. 1 is the early and continued Fowler No. 1 is now drilling ahead at 3100, Fowler No. 2 is rigging up, as is also Pearce No. 1. Huntington 2-A, the Amalgamated's first producer, is cleaning out and will be drilled from 2565 deeper.

showing of the oil. Struck at 350 feet the showing of oil has continued almost continuously to the present depth of 1000 feet. The showing is not big, just enough to show that it is there.
Contfary to the wells drilled in the vicinity of the Gypsy Syndicate, the Syndicate is getting a lot of hard drilling. The hard formation was struck at 350 and at 675, the present depth, it has not softened.
At Huntington Central No. 2 the cement was drilled out at 3000 feet and the dater was found not shut off. No. 1 is being cleaned out with the intention of going deeper.
The rids and tubing have been put in at Miley-Keck No. 2. The best that the well will do is to pump a little oil by heads. Drilled to 2950 this well showed every indication of being a good producer. The way this well has turned out is something of a disappointment.
Should Miley-Keck No. 2 fall to make good at 2590 it will be drilled deeper. At Nos. 3 and 4 rig building is underway.
No success has attended the efforts of the Pantages-Huntington to get the bailer out of its No. 1, lost at 2340. Some 145 feet of sand has filled in on the bailer making the job all the more difficult.
Huntington Beach is being developed heavily by the Standard Oil Company. Six new wells were started, one on the Huntington A lease, one on the Huntington D lease, two on Huntington E Jones Community No. 2 and Tmopson No. 1. A-5 is standing cemented at 2970, also A-7 at 2790. A-9 is drilling at 2300, A-10 at 2400, A-11 at 1600, A-12 at 400, and A-14 is a location and rig building is under way at A-13. Huntington B-2 is drilling at 2950, B-3 at 2400 and B-4 at 600. C-1 and D-1 are drilling at 2400. E-1 is now drilling at 2425. Bolsa No. 2 stands cemented at 2770 and will be that property's next producer. Bolsa

An interesting recital will be given by a group of primary and intermediate piano pupils of Miss Stella A. Schwentker Friday evening, June 10, at 7:45 in the Episcopal Guild Hall on North Emily street.
The pupils will be assisted by Miss Faye Kern and one of her pupils, Evelyn Magathan, in readings. The public is cordially invited to attend.
EASTERN STAR ATTEND
BUENA PARK LODGE
A large gathering was present last night at the dinner served by the Eastern Star chapter of Buena Park to the Anaheim chapter. About 50 Annaheim members motored over at an early hour to enjoy the social evening prepared for them by the neighboring lodge.
At the close of the dinner a business meeting was held and initiation was given four candidates by the past mutrons and patrons present.
SYMPHONY CONCERT IS GREETED BY LARGE ASSEMBLAGE
The program given last night by the Orange County Symphony Orchestra was a great success. Probably one of the most popular numbers of the evening was the Oriental Serenade by Tosselli, a quaint representation of the spirit of the Orient and Oriental dance, set to music.
The Indian dance number and the "National Emblem" march were also encoraded again and again. The orchestra responded generously to applause.
THE SPIRIT FILLED LIFE IS TIMELY THEME OF SUNDAY SERMON
Dr James Allen Goesinger spoke Sunday morning at the White Temple on "The Spirit Filled Life," his sermon being an exposition of the higher life of the Christian as set forth in Ephesians 5:15-18.
"Paul here contrasts two types of life. One he calls the fool's life. The life that centers in the flesh and disregards all the higher intimations of the spirit and conscience. There are innumerable voices calling to him and influences signalling to him—intimations of immortality, the memories of his childhood's faith, his mother's prayers, the stirrings of conscience, the call of the sweet and holy Sabath, the altars of religion, the cross of Christ, doors opening upon heaven, music literature, art—but he wallows on as if he were simply a hog and the world a sty. Paul cries out, "Be not drunk with wine wherein is debauchery and the end of which wasted brain and body."
"That is one type of life. That is the fool's way of living. Paul calls us, the Scriptures always call us, to another way of life: 'But be ye filled with the spirit of God.'"
"We sometimes think of this type of life too materially. We think of our own spirits as containers to be filled up, as a quart measure might be filled up. And there is a sense in which we drink of the spirit of God. When President Harding was electing the members of his cabinet he had on the walls of his room the pictures of Lincoln and Roosevelt and on his table a well worn Bible and he asked himself of each man as he thought of him for a place of responsibility: Is he the kind of man Lincoln would have selected, or Roosevelt? Is he a man who will seek to do the will of God as he sees it?" He was filled with the spirit of Lincoln and Roosevelt, we might say.
"We know how it is in friendship. The spirit of our friend may dominate our own until we really live his life over again. There is a spirit in man and the Almighty giveth him under..."
Huntington E. Jones Community No. Bolsa No. 3 is drilling at 2425.
At 3170 the Stateee Consolidated is to get a production test. In case it does not come up to expectations and make a well it will be drilled on to 3300.
At No. 2 the Sunset set pipe at 2067 and the well is now standing cemented. Some difference of opinion it seems has arisen over the depth considered proper for this section of the field. Sun No. 1 is now drilling ahead with cable tools at 2460 in blue shale. Sun No. 2 is a rig and No. 4 is rigging up.
Just as soon as the state water commission passes on the Texcal Oil Company's No. 1, the well will be put on production. Judging from the showing tail swell has been making it should be good for 500 barrels.
At 2450 the Vista Del Mar No. 2 is being made ready for production. While the well has not shown up very strong, it is thought that it will make a nice well. No. 1 is being held up with heaving sand at 2200 feet.
The world is bossed by men who look at the barber and growl "no powder!"
The program given last night by the Orange County Symphony Orchestra was a great success. Probably one of the most popular numbers of the evening was the Oriental Serenade by Tosselli, a quaint representation of the spirit of the Orient and Oriental dance, set to music.
The Indian dance number and the "National Emblem" march were also encored again and again. The orchestra responded generously to a plaque.
This was the third appearance of the organization under the direction of Professor Walberg. He has done splendid work with the players and deserves great credit for the excellent work of the orchestra.
Grace Sayre, soprano solosit, assisting the orchestra, captivated the audience with her charming personality and songs. Her clear high soprano voice pleased everybody. Songs for kiddies as well as adults were sung.
A large audience heard the program.
BURGLARS BUSY IN SANTA ANA SUNDAY
Three burglaries were deported to the police station in Santa Ana yesterday occurring over the week-end. The Burr Chandler home, 1208 North Main street was entered Sunday night. A leather purse containing $45 in currency, and a few smaller articles were taken.
Three tires were stolen from the J. I. Dickle garage at 602 East Fifth street. They were taken from Dickle's car.
Mrs. Jennie Peek, 525 Wellington avenue, reported that an Eastern Star pin, a gold necklace with a diamond pendant, and several articles of clothing were taken.
"A man comes to peace, love and joy, that is the Godward aspect of his life. He also comes to patience, gentleness and goodness, that is man's life reaching out towards his fellows. Finally, he comes to meekness, faithfulness and self-control, that is the inwardness of his life."
"This is life filled with the spirit of God or fulfilled, rounded out by the friendship of God, by the transforming power of God upon the spirit of man."
"Now this does not mean that there is to be a dead sameness in the lives of the spirit-filled. There will be endless variety, though similarity of spirit and attitude. One man may paint pictures, another write poetry, another edit songs, another work out a great career as statesman. But whatever the sphere of work there will be the triumphant spirit, the cleanness, the service, the good will and kindness, that goes with those who are born of the spirit and live not on the level of the flesh to be its slaves."
"Sometimes we have made this higher life of man unreal, unattractive and even repulsive. We have flayed the body or despised it. We have looked askance upon innocent pleasures. We have feared the intellect and imagined that we can glorify God by ignorance."
"But holiness is above all else wholeness. Though a man is to keep his body under that does not mean that he is to despise or undefeel his body. Our bodies are instruments that we are to use and we can overfeed them and become gluttony or starve them and become helpless. Christianity calls us into an all round development of our faculties."

But holiness is above all else wholeness. Though a man is to keep his body under that does not mean that he is to despise or underfeed his body. Our bodies are instruments that we are to use and we can overfeed them and become gluttonous or starve them and become helpless. Christianity calls us into an all round development of our faculties.
Sometimes we think of this higher experience as the matter of one swift instant. We think of the Christian life as one moment when we kneel at an altar and accept Christ as our Savior and another instant when we are baptized with the Holy Ghost. But that is to misunderstand the whole matter. There is an instantaneousness about our surrenders but God's disciplines are life-long. Our perfection might conceivably be done instantaneously but the fact is it is not. It takes God a whole summer to make a cabbage head, and it takes Him a good deal longer to bring a rebellious human will into full conformity to His own.
But how strange that any one seeking to be known as Christian should be satisfied with a life so little different from the life of the ordinary worldliving who says "let us eat and drink for tomorrow we die," that he cannot be told from the worldling. If we are really living with God there will be a difference in the quality of our lives and in our interests that every one shall be able to tell. The true Christian earnestly seeks to live a life altogether like Christ's and he does it by keeping in the communion of the Holy Spirit."
The musical program at this service was especially good.
Still, mammoth bones are not uncommon. John Bull is pulling them every day in Ireland.

LADIES! DARKEN YOUR GRAY HAIR
Use Grandma's Sage Tea and Sulphur Recipe and Nobody will Know.
The use of Sage and Sulphur for restoring faded, gray hair to its natural color dates back to grandmother's time. She used it to keep her hair beautifully dark, glossy and attractive. Whenever her hair took on that dull, faded or streaked appearance, this simple mixture was applied with wonderful effect.
But brewing at home is mussy and out-of-date. Nowadays, by asking at any drug store for a bottle of "Wyeth's Sage and Sulphur Compound," you will get this famous old preparation, improved by the addition of other ingredients, which can be depended upon to restore natural color and beauty to the hair.
A well-known downtown druggist says it darkens the hair so naturally and evenly that nobody can tell it has been applied. You simply dampen a sponge or soft brush with it and draw this through your hair, taking one strand at a time. By morning the gray hair disappears, and after another application or two, it becomes beautifully dark and glossy.
Wyeth's Sage and Sulphur Compound is a delightful toilet regalite for those who desire a more youthful appearance. It is not intended for the cure, mitigation or prevention of disease.

A seventh day of rest is natural and logical. Even home brew works only six days.
BEFORE AND AFTER CHILDBIRTH
Mrs. Williams Tells How Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound Kept Her in Health
Overpeck, O.—"Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound helped me both before and after my baby was born. I suffered with backache, headache, was generally run down and weak. I saw Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound advertised in the newspapers and decided to try it. Now I feel fine, take care of my two boys and do my own work.
I recommend your medicine to anyone who is ailing. You may publish my testimonial if you think it will help others."—Mrs. CARRIE WILLIAMS, Overpeck, Ohio.
For more than forty years Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound has been restoring women to health who suffered from irregularities, displacements, backaches, headaches, bearing-down pains, nervousness or "the blues."
Today there is hardly a town or hamlet in the United States wherein some woman does not reside who has been made well by it. That is why Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound is now recognized as the standard remedy for such ailments.
