HELLO BILL, HOW'VE THINGS BEEN SINCE I'VE BEEN AWAY? RAILWAY BOARD IS ESTABLISHING A N AUTO DEPARTMENT So rapid has been growth of the automobile transportation industry the railroad commission announced the establishment of an automobile department under the supervision of Mr. Charles A. Beck. According to the announcement, this department will be responsible for all detail work connected with the automobile stage and truck matters, will care for all informal complaints and correspondence, keep time table and schedule filings, handle applications which can be disposed of by ex parte orders, handle and assign applications requiring public hearings, answer all verbal inquiries and in general be responsible to the commission for all work in connection with the operation of stages and trucks under its jurisdiction. Rates, fares and regulations will be handled by the rate department. Issuance of stock, bonds, notes or other securities and the filing of annual or other financial statements will be handled by the department of finance and accounts. The service department as heretofore will look after safety of operation, equipment of cars and the like. The commission announces that Mr. Handford will be responsible for the formulation of definite lines of policy affecting auto, stage and truck transportation so as to promote uniformity of decision. Opinions and orders, excepting the minor ex parte orders, will be reviewed, and concurred in by Mr. Handford before presenting to the commission for its consideration. In all matters of accident, investigation and other questions incidental to transportation from the service standpoint, the service department will continue to function through Mr. Handford reporting to the commission as heretofore. CROP YIELDS WILL DEPEND UPON TWO STATE BANKS SHOW IMPROVED STRENGTH SACRAMENTO, June 7.—Increasing strength in this state indicate sound prosperity in California, according to a statement made by State Bank Superintendent Charles Stern. "The state banks of California are today stronger in resources by $123,189 than a year ago," Stearn said. "Our working capital has increased $22,789,000 and their gross deposits have passed the billion and a quarter dollar mark, showing an increase of -91,445,000." Since the first of January the increase in savings deposits was $9,326,000. This is a year of essential depletion and liquidation. When we consider that the dollar today has working power very much larger than the dollar of a year ago, our position is striking. The basis of California's prosperity is broad and deep. It is essential food production, a strategic geographical location, and the most diversified life of any American community. ORANGE VOTES With a strong general working organization and each precinct thoroughly organized by those favoring the issuance of $160,000 bonds for enlarging school facilities at the union high school. Orange, predictions are made that the issue would carry into the election to be held in the union district today. NOTICE OF FILING OF COMMISSIONER'S REPORT In the Matter of Opening and Extending West Chartress Street in the city of Anaheim. Notice is hereby given that, WHEREAS, in pursuance to resolution entitled "In the matter of opening and extending West Chartress street in the city of Anaheim. Resolution ordering work," which said resolution was passed and adopted by the board of trustees of the city of Anaheim on the 27th day of January 1921, and was approved by the President of the board of trustees of salary city of Anaheim on the 27th day of January 1921. CROP YIELDS WILL DEPEND UPON TWO NECESSARY THINGS STOCKTON, Cal., June 7. "The farmer who deems it desirable to increase his returns per acre by larger yields may achieve this object in two ways," stated Professor P. A. Boving in an announcement here. "He can either adopt improved cultural methods, including better feeding of the crops and better tillage of the lands, or he may introduce seed of better varieties or more suitable strains. A combination of the two systems, of course, will give higher and safer returns than will the use of either singly." "Provided he does not plant inferior varieties, the average man has a greater possibility for gain through the adoption of better cultural methods than by the introduction of better seed. Improved cultural methods may mean anywhere from 10 to 100 per cent increase. An introduction of an improved strain of a certain good variety of seed will effect an average increase of about 15 per cent in the yield. The exact increase depends on course, on what seed was being used before. By adopting both better cultural methods, and better seed, the increase is usually exceptionally large." FINED $100; CHARGED WITH BOOTLEGGING IN ORANGE CO. M. Roseque paid $100 fine Monday morning to Justice Cox after pleading guilty to a charge of conducting a blind pig. He was arrested by Sheriff C. E. Jackson last night in La Habra, where he conducts a dairy. He first pleaded not guilty, but changed his mind when he was started toward jail. Nothing subdues fiery skin eruptions so quickly, says a noted skin specialist. The moment this sulphur preparation is applied the itching stops and after two or three applications, the eczema is gone and the skin is delightfully clear and smooth. Sulphur is so precious as a skin remedy because it destroys the parasites that cause the burning, itching or disfigurement. Mentho-Sulphur always heals eczema right up. A small jar of Mentho-Sulphur may be had at any good drug store. —Advertisement.
