Comment on Today's News
By HENRY JAMES
President Harding assured the graduates of Annapolis that so long as he continued in office no American would be called upon to fire a gun except in a cause in harmony with the American conscience, and for which answer could be made to God. Even casual analysis shows this statement to be safe, sane and entirely within keeping with the sentiment of the country. A glance at history confirms belief that the people of the United States have refrained seduously from firing promiscuously upon their neighbors. It never has been the national intention to go on the warpath unless in response to demands that could not be ignored. Of all the conflicts in which this country has been engaged, that with Mexico is the only one concerning which the community conscience was not wholly at ease; and that was long ago.
Classes in Americanization represent one of the most benignant of educational forces in this country. They are to help aliens who not only desire to become citizens, but to enter upon the new responsibilities with understanding. The classes impart knowledge of the constitution, of the form of government, the powers of officials, the functions of the courts, but above all they promote the vital spirit of loyalty which is the essence of good citizenship. So great is the confidence felt in the potency of the training these classes give, that many judges in granting citizenship are guided by the fact that the applicant has a diploma showing graduation from such a class. Panama in this respect has been alert.

An interesting point relating to insurance has been raised in the case of the late J. C. Denton, murdered by Louise Peete. Demur is made to demand for payment of an accident policy. The contention of plaintiff is that the victim of murder is the victim of accident unless himself the aggressor.
