Some anonymous naval authority of France explains that the United States could not have a war with Japan unless first provided with a base in the Orient. Possibly an excellent way to avoid embarrassment in this respect would be not to have war with Japan. Also, it is worth remembering that while the United States has no such naval base, Japan will not be permitted to establish one on Catalina for itself.
Opponents of the naval bill contend that the plan for a naval base at Alameda involves the seizing of the Marne Island station. Of course, it does as most likely Borah and his crowd are aware. The department intends to continue making the fullest use of Marne Island, but recognizes the impossibility of equipping it to handle the modern battleship.
The amount of whiskey to be consumed in this country will for a time at least depend upon the application by doctors of the medical code of ethics to their conduct. Apparently they are at liberty to write whisky prescriptions until checked by writer's cramp.
Ulster, about to hold an election, truly is an armed camp. Whatever the outcome of the election it, is likely to be attended by violent activities possibly exceeding those already of record.
A notable gathering of men was that at Hotel del Arroyo in Pasadena Thursday night, the occasion having for its purpose the extending of a greeting to F W. Kellogg, recently returned from Europe. The address of the guest of honor probably was the most informative concerning conditions that have followed the world war, to which any of the auditors had had the privilege of listening. It certainly threw light into dark corners of the old country. It told of stricken peoples struggling back to normal under the handicap of great financial burdens. It revealed the fact that Germany knows it was defeated, that the German citizens are chastened, humble, conscious of the error into which the military regime led them. The speaker told of the relentless attitude of France, made poignantly regrettable through the present necessity for a spirit of forgiveness, of mutual endeavor, and of taking common cause against the menace of bolshevism.
Mr. Kellogg affirmed belief that within two years Germany would be asked to straighten out Russia, which he described as a nation enslaved. The little states created as buffers between Russia and the rest of Europe, were sympathetic with bolshevism, which has spent vast sums in corruption of opinion. These states therefore were as gates for Russia into Europe, but barriers against a concerted move in the direction of Russia. There must be reform of Russia or over European civilization was the threat of a return to the barbarism of the Dark Ages.
The speaker told, calmly but explicitly of the vast harm wrought by profiteers particularly in France, England and the United States. Their conduct he regarded as a grave danger. He called for fraternity, benevolence, the teachings of Jesus as more and more the rule of human conduct.
All listened with close attention, their appreciation evident. Members of the staff of the Pasadena Post of which Mr. Kellogg is the publisher, were present and desire the privilege of expressing their thanks for an address made so forceful by its outstanding truth, by its sincerity and the broad and illuminating interpretation not only of the psychology but of the material status of Europe.

FOUR DOCTORS GAVE HER UP
Through a Neighbor’s Advice This Woman Was Restored to Health by Lydia E. Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound
Kenosha, Wis. — “I suffered with a female trouble and at last was in bed for six weeks with what the doctors called inflammation of the bowels. Four of them said I could not live. A neighbor told me to use Lydia E. Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound and it helped me from the start. When the doctor came I told him what I had taken and he said, 'Throw my medicine away and keep on with the Pinkham medicine.' I did and it cured me. If more women would take your medicine they would not suffer so. I have recommended the Vegetable Compound to lots of people and they have been satisfied.' — Mrs. Mary RHAPSTOCK, 2701 Wisconsin St., Kenosha, Wisconsin.
When a woman is beset with such symptoms as irregularities, inflammation, ulceration, a displacement, backache, headaches, bearing-down pains, nervousness or the "blues" she should treat the cause of such conditions by taking Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound, the standard remedy for woman's ill.

South Dakota enacted a set of blue laws that forbade Sunday games of baseball. Players were caught in the act and duly arrested. When the case reached the court buttressed by an abundance of facts the judge threw it out. Perhaps this is a form of opposition which the proponents of restricted personal liberty had not anticipated.
Purchase of the Salt Lake road by the Union Pacific is an important change in the world of traffic. There seems to be a tendency to regard it as favored to the commercial interests of the territory served by the line. Ever since E. H. Harriman breathed the breath of life into the Union Pacific it has been a notably well-managed concern.
Armed American raiders are said to have crossed the Mexican border and lynched a Mexican. Mexico is the country the United States has some thought of honoring by recognition. Possibly it may get proud and decline to be recognized.
HUNTINGTON BEACH
New wells in the Huntington Beach oil field are more or less of daily occurrence now, with excitement over each new find in that section running as high as ever. Operations are moving rapidly and it is said that several contests of speed have developed by companies drilling holes close to each other.
The Standard Oil company was expected to bring in C-1 well on its C lease of property of the Huntington Beach Oil company. Everything is set for the "blow-off," with every indication pointing to possibility of the company realizing its expectation.
C-1 is located about 400 feet west
Not a Bite of Breakfast Until You Drink Water
Says a glass of hot water and phosphate prevents illness and keeps us fit.
Just as coal, when it burns, leaves behind a certain amount of incompatible material in the form of ashes, the food and drink taken day after leaves in the alimentary canal a certain amount of indigestible material which if not completely eliminated from the system each day, becomes food for the millions of bacteria which infest the bowels. From this has left over waste, toxins andDomain-like poisons are formed and toked into the blood.
Mon and women who can't get feeding right must begin to take inside their oring drink a glass of real hot water with a teaspoonful of limestone phosphate in it to wash out of a thirty feet of bowels the previous day's accumulation of poisons and sins and to keep the entire alimentary canal clean, pure and fresh. Those who are subject to sick headache, colds, billiousness, constipation, here who wake up with bad taste, air breath, backache, rheumatic stiffness, or have a sour, gassy stomach meals are urged to get a quarter and of limestone phosphate from a drug store, and begin practicing fernal sanitation. This will cost very little, but is sufficient to make gone an enthusiast on the subject. Remember inside bathing is more important than outside bathing, because the skin pores do not absorb purities into the blood, causing poor health, while the bowel pores do not as soap and hot water cleanses, celens and freshens the skin, so it water and limestone phosphate on the stomach, liver, kidneys and wells.

C-1 is located about 400 feet west of Bolsa Chica No. 1, the big well of the field and the property of the Standard.
That the Standard Oil company considers the Huntington Beach oil field a permanent one is indicated by the fact that the company has bought thirty acres north of the field for the establishment of an "oil tank farm."
The property was bought of Bert Gothard of Huntington Beach.
In connection with the transaction it was said that the Standard announced the property was being acquired as the site for a number of tanks.
The location of the "tank farm" is north of the defunct field of today.

News Notes of the Oil Fields
Just as the Fullerton Oil company was planning to bring in its deep Anaheim Union well drilled to 4570 feet, a twist off left 300 feet of drill pipe in the hole, and now drilling by is at 4236. The work is being done with cable tools. While the delay is discouraging, the well will be put into condition in a short time. Something good can be expected when this well comes in.
The General Petroleum is bringing in McKraken No. 1 at 3287. Judging from the showing the well has been making a small producer is the best that can be expected. The Harrington-Dumas Oil company plans to have its No. 1 back on production before the end of the week. The well has been deepened from 3170 To 3222, and it is believed that the extra hole will make it a good producer. The well is washing out nice and looks like a 350 producer.
The Placentia-Pacific Oil company's Wents No. 1 is now drilling at 3800 feet and is beginning to look very encouraging. While the showing is good, it is believed that the best thing now is to carry this well into the deep sands and get the big production while the drilling is underway. At 4000 feet Placentia-Pacific No. 1 may duplicate Chapman No. 6.
Considerable progress is being made by the Placentia Oil company toward getting its No. 1 freed from a fishing job, and nw hole will be in the making now in a few days. Drilling was at 2850 in shale that was showing oil when the twist off came.
At times the Petroleum Development company's Bradford No. 1 flows and looks like a big well, and then again it settles down to a pumper. To date the best that this 4120 foot well will make is about 200 barrels. Bradford ...o. 3 at 4200 feet is in gray sand showing little indications of oil. No. 5 at 3965 is showing some oil. Richfield Vorba No. 1 drilling at 3520 in sandy shale, struck some water and is to be re-cemented. Development work is being prosecuted rapidly on the Krug property. No. 1 is 2800 in sticky shale. No. 3 is 2800 in brown shale, No. 3 at 2500 is in sandy shale, No. 4 is drilling at 1564 in blue shale, and No. 5 shows the rig built and complete. Lumber is on the ground for No. 6. The Richfield-Consolidated wells No. 1 and No. 2 are being cleaned out and will be put on production in a few days.
Drilling at 3800 feet the Richfield-Giant No. 1 is showing some oil, a light showing. The drilling is going splendidly and reflects credit on Contractor Jack McKeon.
The Richfield-United has shut its 200 barrel well in with the intention of going 200 feet deeper. The original depth was 3240. Two hundred feet more hole is expected to double the production.
The Ridge Oil company's No. 1 is now drilling at 3225 where a slight showing of oil was noted. The condition of the hole is good and it is believed it will be possible to make a second shut off on the water soon.
The S-H-R Oil company is making some good drilling time on Claxon-Wardman No. 2, a week's work notting one thousand feet. No. 1 completed two weeks ago has settled down to 350 barrels. The rig for No. 3 is building...
