NEWPORT BEACH IS BEING IMPROVED; SEWER SYSTEM
Actual construction work on the new $360,000 sewer system contract which was recently let by the Newport Beach city trustees, is under way with assurance that no time will be lost in carrying the project to completion.
A great many miles of pipe will be laid on the job, some of it as large as 20 inches in diameter, and one of the big items of the job is the making of this pipe. Cement pipe will be used, as cement pipe has been found to be most satisfactory, and some of its pipe laid in Paris 300 years ago still in use.
The pipe-making machinery arrived at Newport Beach this week, and is being installed on a tract on Central Avenue at the old gas plant site. Bent brothers will make the pipe, starting within a few days, and about two weeks later the crews of the Thos. Daventry Company sewer contractors will be on the ground to begin digging patches, laying pipe, making proper connections, etc.
The big street paving program laid for Newport Beach has been held pending the construction of the new sewer system, inasmuch as the streets and alleys must be torn up while the pipe is being laid. As soon as the sewer system is completed, in the course of a few months, and the legal angles of the project smoothed out, a program of street paving will start that will result in the paving of practically every street in the Newport, East Newport and Balboa districts.
The new sewer system is planned to be sufficient to provide for the needs of the city for twenty-five years come and ample to provide for a pumping plant, land all piped and leveled. Improvements worth more than money asked.
