All Naval Reserve Officers in Special Science Study Set for County Boys
Two local youths, James S. Hanson, Garden Grove High School, and John F. Parrish, Buena Park High School, have been selected along with 24 other science-minded Southern California high school juniors to participate in an intensive seven-week summer course in science, mathematics and satellite tracking at the Thacher School near Ojai. The announcement was made by Dr. Richard Sutton, chairman of the program's executive committee.
The group chosen to take the course were screened from an original 240 boys. The final selections were made following personal interviews with 71 of the youths.
The course, which is the first of its kind in the West and extending from June 23 to August 11, is sponsored by Caltech; Helms Foundation, Inc.; Hughes Aircraft Co.; Lloyd Foundation and the Thacher School.
No tuition is to be charged the boys for their attendance.

Japanese into Union
LOS ANGELES (UPI)—Longshore boss Harry Bridges is on his way to Japan to sign up Japanese dock workers as part of a "Pacific encirclement plan," according to a Los Angeles Daily Journal of Commerce report quoting "authoritative" sources.
The paper which covers shipping news said, "The Bridges' program reputedly would link his docker union (the International Longshoremen and Warehousemens Union) around a perimeter including the U.S., Canada, Alaska, Japan, Australia, The Philippines and Hawaii."
The paper reported shipping interests declared such an accomplishment would mean the union could "tie the Pacific in knots" in event of a national emergency or civil shipping dispute.
Around Hollywood
By Vernon Scott
HOLLYWOOD (UPI)—A grand old 54,000-ton lady may precipitate World War III—between France and the United States—when she is sunk in the Pacific for the benefit of movie cameras.
The old gal, a harridan now, once was the pride of the French fleet, the Ile de France—a gracious queen of the New York-to-Europe run.
She has been rented by producer Andy Stone for his new picture, a disaster story based on a sinking ship. Inasmuch as the Ile de France, a has-been at 32 years, was scheduled for the scrap heap, Stone decided to send her to the bottom in the film's finale.
When his plans were announced it almost caused an international incident.
Especially outraged was the French Line, previous owner of the flag ship. Other Frenchmen and former passengers from all over the world wrote, telephoned and cabled abuse to Stone.
"It was awful," the whispy, good-natured producer said.
He was directed by the French government not to publicize the use of the once-proud ship, which carried passengers until a few months ago.
"It's breaking my heart not to talk about it," Andy mourned.
"One word from me will ruin everything and make a million enemies."
If Stone or MGM mention the Ile de France, they will be refused permission to use her in the picture. The vessel's name cannot be used on the screen either. She will be rechristened the SS Olympus.
As of this moment, the glamorous trans-Atlantic flag ship is rusting in Osaka, Japan, where it is doomed to be scrapped. An English scrapping and salvage firm shelled out some $1,200,000 for her.
Stone and his crew leave for Osaka next week to begin filming.
