The Bulletin Women Grosse Lois Sutherland Edition Monday, May 11, 1959 Anaheim (Cal.) Bulletin—A-5 Patrick Henry PTA Sets First Field Day The Patrick Henry Parent-Teacher Association has set May 16 as the date for their first annual Field Day. All types of field events, races, games, baseball throw-and many other games of skill have been planned with ribbons to be awarded to the winners. There will also be a fish pond, country store, cake walk, white elephant and surprise booth and a booth to sell the new Patrick Henry pennants. The committee has planned for the sale of baked goods, hot dogs, pizza, popcorn, ice cream and cold drinks. The schedule set for the field events are as follows: 1:30-2:30, relays and footraces; 2:30-3:30, baseball play-off between 5th and 6th grades; 3:30-4:30, baseball game between faculty and PTA; 4:30-5 p.m., three-legged race for fathers and sons. Movies will be shown to the pupils May 13 with one can of food paying the admission. The cans of food will be sold in the country store on Field Day. Field Day is open to the public and all neighbors and friends of the School are cordially invited to attend. The students of Patrick Henry have been taking their written tests on bicycle safety and Principal James Hull, reports that a very high percentage have passed. Some time after May 12, the Anaheim Police Department will come to the school to look for mechanical defects and to give the riding tests. The students have shown great enthusiasm and much interest in this safety program. Mothers, Daughters Church Share Mothers The mothers and daughters of the Anaheim Christian Church enjoyed another successful banquet when Mr. and Mrs. Gerry Nesmith prepared the dinner which was served by the men of the Merger than 180 women and girls of the church attended. The program the year was presented by the C. S. Class, with Mrs. Jack Wood acting as mistress of ceremonies. Guest speaker was Mrs. Rubin Anderson, wife of the pastor of the Long Beach Christian Church. She was presented to the group by her personal friend and the wife of the Anaheim Christian Church pastor, Mrs. Al Casebeer. Mrs. Anderson spoke of the role of a wife mother as represented in the Scrolls. The program was in charge of members of the C.S.C. Club with Mrs. Jack Wood as Mistress of Ceremonies. A trumpet solo was played by Robin Wilferth, accompanied by Mrs. Charles Vaughn with the women of the C.S.C. Club seen in an amusing skit entitled "This is a wifey?" Participants were: Mrs. Robert Johnson, Ms. Jean Firth, Mrs. Harvey Worome, Mrs. Robert Hunt, Ms. Wallace Willerth and Mrs. Jo Wood. Group singing, Mrs. Marsh McFlee at the plano, was a part of the entertainment. Decorations this year were decorated by the ladies of the Keystone Clan. Here and There Mr. and Mrs. Jack Crosson of Marysville are the parents of a daughter born Friday night. The couple make their home at 1804 Clement St. Marysville. Mrs. Crosson will be remembered as the former Carol Gastelum, former assistant women's page editor for the Anaheim Bulletin. Grandparents of the baby are Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Crosson of Orange and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Gastelum of Anaheim. Ralph Seward, formerly of Anaheim, is a patient at the Florence Nightingale Sanitarium in Orange. Seward took ill at his home in Yucaca Valley where he and his wife, Jessie Coons Seward, established their home. TO HONOR MEMBERS Bar Auxiliary Sets Garden Party May 21 The Orange County Bar Auxiliary is staging its annual swimming and garden party on May 21 at the home of Mrs. Samuel Hurwitz, 15181 Owens Dr., Santa Ana. The event also will inaugurate the first annual awards luncheon at which time 67 members, who have contributed more than 6,000 hours in two and half years to the Auxiliary's philanthropic project, legal aid and lawyer reference service, to be honored. Members of the Bar Auxiliary, other than fund raising for proj- Ralph Seward, formerly of Anaheim, is a patient at the Florence Nightingale Sanitarium in Orange. Seward took ill at his home in Yuca Valley where he and his wife, Jessie Coons Seward, established their home. Deanery Meets at Capistrano Mrs. William Krom, presiding at the Orange County Deanery Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women meeting held at the San Juan Capistrano Mission, presented Mrs. Eugene Eckes, teacher training for Confraternity work, who spoke on the summer four-week program. The school is conducted by the Confraternity of Christian-Doctrine and is a "Catholic in Action" program. Introduced also were delegations from all parishes in the county with Mrs. William Forsyth, president of the ladies of Capistrano Guild extending a welcome to the assembly. Mrs. Don Arford, president of St. Anthony Claret's Women's Council, introduced by Mrs. Krom, spoke of installation ceremonies. Mrs. A. Lester, co-chairman of the Cooperating with Spanish Speaking Section of the Los Angeles Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women, traced the origin of the devotion to Our Lady of Guadaloupe from long before the discovery of America. "No wonder Our Lady became the patron saint of Mexico and co-patroness saint of the Diocese." Mrs. Krom spoke of money raising activities of the women of the parishes. The women of Capistrano wore Spanish costumes as they served luncheon. Alumnae Clubs To Meet for Tuesday Lunch Santa Ana Area and Northern Orange County Alumnae Clubs will meet for luncheon Tuesday at the home of Mrs.Kellar Watson, 655 S. Glassell, Orange at 11:30 a.m. Hostesses with Mrs. Watson will be Mrs. James Richardson, Mrs. Fred Hendricks of Santa Ana; Mrs. Richard Frye, Garden Grove; Mrs. Ray Folks, Jr., Mrs. Carl W. Wood, Mrs. George Western of Fullerton. Mrs. Robert E. Donker, Santa Ana will preside at the business meeting. Mrs. Frederick Pauly Pasadena, district 7 alumnae president, Mrs. Howard Plumer, president of the Pasadena Alumnae president; Mrs. James Blackburn president of the Orange County Club will be among special guests. Sets May 21 VFW Auxiliary Installs New Officers The Ladies Auxiliary 3173 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Anaheim held installation ceremonies at the Legion Hall with Mrs. Opal Walters acting as installing officer. Seated were: Mrs. Elizabeth Aldrich, president; Mrs. Anna Stakemiller, senior vice-president; Mrs. Ida Trudel, junior vice-president; Mrs. Florence Jensen, chaplain; Mrs. Cecile Baxter, conductress; Mrs. Agnes Hund, treasurer; Mrs. Opal Walters, secretary; Mrs. Emma Daniels, guard; Mrs. Florence Carroll, patriotic instructor; Mrs. Vilda King, banner bearer; Mrs. Molly Cloes, flag bearer; Mrs. Jean Roberts, Mrs. Grace Dierberger, Mrs. Adeline Schroeder, Mrs. Martha Russell, color bearers; Mrs. Bessie Smith and Mrs. Florence Jensen, trustee; Mrs. Amy Whiteman, historian; Mrs. Anna Stakemiller, publicity chairman. Among the activities slated for the future are a department meeting June 14-18 in San Diego; a District meeting at Hemet May 17 and a rummage sale in the near future. The special guest for Dr. Giles T. Brown's "Behind the Headlines Forum" on May 12 will be Miss Beta Whittlesey who will relate her experiences in visiting the Amazon Jungle region. Miss Whittlesey is connected with the Bert Noble Foundation. Crown Laurrie Currie Dream Girl at Ball Today Miss Laurrie Currie wears the crown of the first YMCA Dream Girl, the coveted honor bestowed on her at the first formal "Enchanted Dream Ball" sponsored by the YMCA Women's Committee for Western High School. Held at the Anaheim Ebell clubhouse, the theme of the ball was oriental with Miss Currie's royal crown created from flowers of the Far East. A bouquet of red rose buds, arranged on a silver fan, and a jewelled necklace were among her interesting gifts, her momentoes of the gala party. Candidates for the top honor had previously been elected from Junior Clubs which represents the top grade level at Western High School this year. These included Chris Wiley, Kathy Tennant, Sheryl Mercer, Terry Hess, Sharon Skoglund and Laurie Currie. Results of the final ballot were not revealed until the night of the dance, as a high point of the coronation ceremony. Candidates honored were presented with gold Japanese fans. They served as honor guard for the royal party. Drawn from a Japanese Lantern, attendants from the Sophomore and Freshman level were chosen by chance to be members of the honored group. Miss Kathy Persiani received the Sophomore honor and Miss Lana Gould, the Freshman. Each attendant was given a nosegay corsage of white carnations and white roses. The clubhouse was attended with oriental appointments including cherry blossoms, a child Ming tree, Japanese lanterns, umbrellas and more ored lights. Flowering shrubs bright red pots were banked a rustic red bridge and spaded to form the focal background the evening's ceremonies. GENEROUS GIFT—Father M. L. Ortmann, pastor of the St. Philip Benizil Church, receives a check for $425 from Mrs. Walter W. Thibodeau, chairman of the recent Our Lady of the Rosary (YLI) fashion show and luncheon held at Knott's Garden Room. Mrs. Thibodeau is a member of the St. Philip Benizil parish and is not only active in leadership in the YLI but her church as well. The check will go toward the purchase of a monstrance for the new church, the inscription on the sacred vessel to read—"Donated by YLI 109."
