Weak Anaheim Nine Faces Tribe Tomorrow
FULLERTON — Hoping they can return to the win column following two straight setbacks, Anaheim’s Colonists will meet Fullerton’s Indians at Amerige Park tomorrow.
Gametime is scheduled for 3:15 with a good turnout of hopeful local fans expected for the tussle.
Top Relay Teams Highlight Coliseum Event
Texas, Abilene Christian and San Jose State — the nation's fastest collegiate sprint relay teams — headline the 440 and 880 yard sprint relay fields at the 19th annual Coliseum Relays Friday night, May 15.
Abilene, with swift Bill Woodhouse on the anchor, holds the world record in the 440 relay with a mark of 39.7, and is defending the title won at the Coliseum Relays last year when the quartet did a 40.5 on the grass track. In the recent Mt. San Antonio Relays, San Jose ran a 40.4, with Ray Norton, a co-holder of the world 100-yard dash record at 9.3, running the anchor leg.
Texas won at Drake in 40.6 and Abilene Christian won the Penn relays in 40.9.
In the 880 relay, Texas is favored off its 1:23.9 time at Drake which equalled the team’s Coliseum record set two years ago. Eddie Southern takes care of the anchor lap in addition to his other duties in Coach John Wallin’s Colonists, who dropped consecutive decisions to Newport Harbor and Garden Grove, now are saddled with a Sunset League mark of three wins and four setbacks, one of the worst records turned in by a local crew in many years.
The defending champions will be going up against a Fullerton squad which has also not lived up to pre-season expectations.
Coach Jim Bass’ Tribesmen were knocked off 8-4 in their last fray, this being to Santa Ana’s Saints.
Skins Rate
The Redskins, who were rated along with Anaheim as one of the teams to beat for Sunset laurels are stuck with a record of two wins and five losses.
Earlier in the week Bass reported that his club must be rated only as “spoilers” because his squad was “outhustled” by Huntington Beach, the crew which blasted the Tribe prior to their Saint defeat.
Expected to take the mound for the Fullerton club is Tim Givens or Roger Pembroke who was defeated by the Saints Tuesday.
He will be faced by either Clint Stark or Bill Bielefeld, with the latter appearing to be the best guess.
The last time these clubs met it resulted in a 12 inning 5-4 victory for the Colonists and for this...

The 440-yard relay field also has Rice, Houston, Villanova and Occidental. The 880 has the same teams except USC replaces Villanova.
General chairman William C. Ackerman reports a large advance ticket sale which indicates a crowd in excess of 50,000. Tickets priced at $2.50 are now on sale at all leading ticket agencies and at the box offices of the local universities and the Coliseum.

SUGAR RAY PONDERS — Sugar Ray Robinson seems to be pondering his future in his New York office after learning the National Boxing Association had vacated his middleweight crown. I've been offered a big guarantee by a German promoter to defend my title against Gustav Scholz if I'm forced out of my own country," Robinson said. Scholz is the fourth-ranking contender, but has been rejected as a challenger by both the NBA and the New York State Athletic Commission.

Local 'Y' Offers Swim Instruction for Local Youngsters Saturdays
Many people who go in the water and even strange waters, ignore the need for skilled professional training. The poor swimmer is a constant menace to himself and to others. Non-swimmers pose an even greater threat, according to YMCA water safety experts. Until they learn the basic fundamentals the only advice is to stay out of the water.
A life guard should always be present. One should never swim alone. Warning signs should be looked for and obeyed. Many people have been injured by diving into shallow water and many others have been infected by polluted water because they ignored warning signs.
ALWAYS RACE TOWARDS SHORE -- NOT AWAY FROM IT.
LEARN TO SWIM WELL.
